Re: Attachments go astray

2007-01-18 Thread Mervyn Giuliana Bond

I think I have resolved the 'Attachments go astray' mystery.
Checking in the Help of Eudora I found the following entry:
What do the Parts and Cache folder in my Eudora Folder do?
Document ID: 1574HQ

The Parts folder is like the attachments folder, except that
it's used for images sent along with HTML images.
The Cache folder is like a browser's cache folder; it's used
for local copies of images fetched from the net via

http.
When I turned on the Blah Blah in Eudora's menu after opening one of
my son's emails with an attachment I found a block of html, and the
attachment had gone to the Parts folder.
My son later sent me an email in plain text with an attachment and it
went to my Attachment folder. In both cases Eudora is doign its job.

Is Mail, by default, set to compose in html?

Placement of the attachment is an interesting one. In Eudora when I
add an attachment an icon appears in the Header just below Bcc. My
son said he just clicks anywhere in the body of the email, above or
below the signature, and says 'attach'. Yes, the images do come up
in the email I receive as well as getting the feral files.
Other than Eudora I have only used web site mail, and those clients
all had a specific spot - usually at the bottom - for identifying
the file name being attached. I'm surprised Mail hasn't something
similar, or perhaps it has, and he has overlooked it.

both types.

Good luck.

There does not appear to be any preference in Mail that would affect
 an attachment ,
so I wonder .. does your son have files with names that
 include or exclude the
file extension name..eg .jpg .doc .xls

and do the other attachments include or exclude the file extansion ?

The photos he sends have been processed in Photoshop (CS) and the
 typical accompanying info is:

 Content-Id: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 Content-Type: image/jpeg;
 x-mac-type=4A504547;
 x-unix-mode=0644;
 x-mac-creator=3842494D;

 Content-Disposition: inline;
 filename=MumKaye.jpg
The file located in Eudora Parts folder is, in this instance, named
 MumKaye.jpg
I am not aware of any inclusions or exclusions being applied. Where
 would he do that?

In all other cases (other senders) the extension is shown.

It's the only choice I can see .. perhaps he has it set at Rich

DVD question

2007-01-18 Thread Lodge family

Hi all.
Last year I transferred all my VHS tapes to dvd via imovie/idvd.
I would like to transfer about 30 secs off the dvd to use in iphoto
slideshow for a birthday.

I no longer have access to analogue to digital convertor.

I do have canon digital camera, could I use output from dvd player
and record back to camera and record on camera, then import from
camera into imovie.

Thanks in anticipation.

Re: DVD question

2007-01-18 Thread Jude
You could do that, or you could get MPEGStreamclip, which is a good
free application that can rip parts of DVDs for use in iMovie and
FCP. There are other similar software solutions out there too, such
as DVDXDV .

You can find MPEGstreamclip here
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html

DVDxDV here http://www.lafcpug.org/store_soft_hard.html#anchor3791410

And Cinematize (which has a universal version) here

Hope this helps

Lloyd and all,

I have had a TomTom 300 for 18 months which I selected after much
research.
IMHO they have the best interface and while they weren't really Mac
friendly to
start with (applications were Windows only) they are now ! This was
a issue
when new OS software became available (there have been a number of
updates
- free - that have added features and so on) but I got around it by
manually
copying the files across (using a card reader).

There now is a program TomTom Home which your run on your Mac
and from

that you can backup your data and upload new programs, voices and
maps etc.
It isn't the best program but it does the job... Connect via the
miniUSB port that
is the same one as in my Blackberry and Digital Camera.

Basically most of the units available use the same whereis.com AU
data and
errors in mapping will show up whatever device you use. I still
can't believe
that there is still a phantom roundabout near to Binninup (between
Bunbury
and Perth on the Old Coast Road) that is still present in the latest
TomTom
maps as well as being in the prior version and the CDROM's in both
BMW
and Mercedes I had with built in systems which were inbuilt (the
TomTom

is better in most respects than those very expensive options).

If you have the AU maps, you can still buy and download maps for many
places
in the world online via the store built in to TomTom Home.

eg. UK and Ireland plus major roads of Western Europe - 59.99 Euros
Detailed Western Europe (street level coverage) - 99.99 Euros
Detailed USA and Canada (street level coverage) - 99.99 Euros

Dependent on the size of the memory (and/or card) you can have all
installed and
switch between the map databases depending on where you are...

The good thing is that you can look at the maps before you go, add in
destinations
and even be able to work out roughly how long it will take you to get
from one
place to another. This is great when you arrive at a unknown airport
and
put your unit in a rentaracer and set off to places unknown !

There are also some freeware programs you can install on the TomTom
that are
quite a bit of fun to play with. One is Tripmaster that you can
set to log your
co-ordinates every so often and then you can import these into google
maps
so you can see where you have been !

http://www.webazar.org/tomtom/plugins.php?lang=uk

http://www.yournav.com is also good resource to check out.

Funny as it seems, the TomTom actually uses a custom version of
Linux...

Hope this helps !

Regards

Mark

Are these things Mac friendly? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Your right : about 1 Mb would be a maximum size I would have thought .
Some people have mailboxes that are only 10 MB or less , and they
need to receive other mail as well .

Why is it so big

Does it have photo's or the likes included ?
Can you downsize them before making them into PDF ?

It needs a significant shift to reduce size ... much more than a
compressor would achieve .

Any thoughts at all on why this may be happening?

Desktop Icons Disappearing

2007-01-18 Thread Aurora
Hi,

I am running OSX 10.3.9

My problem is that a number of the icons on my desktop will change without
warning. Usually either on mounting (thumb drive) or saving documents (excel
for example)

It is driving me nuts. The items involved will open correctly but the chosen
icon is most commonly blank or a test pattern like creation.

Can anyone please advise?

Smiles

Re: Freezing eMac

2007-01-18 Thread Shay Telfer

Some ideas:

* Run Applications/Utilities/Console.App and look for any problems or
repeated messages in console.log or system.log.

* Run memtest from http://memtestosx.org/ from single user mode overnight

* Create a new 'Clean' user and see if the problem persists for that
user. If not then it probably means it's something you've installed
for your 'unclean' user that's causing the problem.

* Disconnect any peripherals other than Apple mouse and keyboard and
see if the problem persists.

* Check the disk with DiskWarrior http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/

* Upgrade the OS to Tiger (you can probably find cheaper copies these
days or wait until Leopard's out :)

Have fun,
Shay
