Yes Jo,
Set up a Rules for the person & under 'Perform the following actions'
you can set colour of background.

iWork 08 and Appleworks

2007-08-27 Thread Richard Anderson
iWork 08 seems to be a substitute or upgrade for Appleworks. Has
anyone tried it or compared them? Having just bought Appleworks for
over $200 I'm not too happy about not even being offered an up-grade
price on this. I can't even get a 7-day trial on it

Mail - changing subject titles

I get e-mails with subjects like . Is it possible to
change these to something more meaningful? Anything from Apple

any way of changing that on my system,

unknown " rules " advice reqd.

2007-08-27 Thread Bill Cole

Hi,
G5,1.8mhz, 768ram, V10.4.10.

Looked under Rules in mail Prefs, and found the following ( of which
I have no knowledge of, )

Rule No 1. " from" " contains"[EMAIL PROTECTED]
then states move to " pop account '

Rule No 2, ditto [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ditto

can I just delete these, I have sent email to both of them to try to
find out who they are, but both come back as shown below, or are
these needed , I have also searched on Safari also with negative result.

If it's just a matter of deleting them, then how did they get there.?

Thanks for any enlightenment

Camcorder Movie to Mac

2007-08-27 Thread Wilson Tony

One last try

I have purchased a Panasonic SDR H20 Video Camera

It ships with a USB cable for transfer to a computer and an Svideo
cable for TV connection

The TV aspect works fine but I cannot get movies on to my Mac Mini
via the USB cable.

Specifications say the recording media is an SD memory Card - SDHC,
and a 30GB HDD

The camera will record and play back via both the card and the hard
disk on the camera itself. However, what is required on the MacMini
to enable recognition of the .mov files recorded by the camera.

It appears that buying the camera is only part 1. PC users receive
software to automatically accept the movie but Macintosh owners have
to flounder around without any assistance from the manual, etc. I
purchased on an understanding that the cameras were drag and drop.

Is there anyone in our community able to direct me away from this
futile floundering darkness

I have downloaded MPEG Streamclip but it requires further payment for
a plug in. I read of your comments about iMovie 8 - is that the
answer? BTW, I come to this forum having checked many sites.

Sometimes new technology should be left to a small minority of
experts until it becomes old technology me thinks

TIA

Re: Camcorder Movie to Mac

2007-08-27 Thread Susan Hastings
Hi Tony, do the SDHC card and Hard Drive on the camera show up on the
Mac at all? That would give you the drag and drop. However, you might
still have to do some conversion to get them into iMovie.

You cannot import directly into older versions of iMovie via a USB
cable. Macs always required the Firewire connection for direct
importing.

If you can't see the SDHC card and Hard Drive on the desktop when you
connect them via the USB cable, then you will have to purchase iLife
08 so that you have the latest version of iMovie that can import
video using a USB cable. This link shows cameras that are supported,
just doesn't happen to list your camera. However, it looks like your
camera would be recording in MPEG-2 which is supported.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306171

If the link doesn't work, try under Apple support for imovie.

I don't think there is a definite answer to your query, you may just
have to try it and see. The advantage of iLife 08 is that all of the
applications are enhanced and it only costs $99.

Susan.

HI Bill ,

Well you can delete (remove) them ! That is easily done , but as to
why they are there

is another story !

Did you set this up yourself , or did somebody set up your Mac for you ?

I am thinking somebody may have been demonstrating how a rule could
be set up !

Sometimes you may find that on installing Mail , Apple places a rule
there during the installation process

so that their messages are received in your Pop mail box ,
but there would be no other rule that I have seen that has not been
generated by the user !

New imac advice wanted

2007-08-27 Thread Graham Byatt

Hi all,

I'm thinking of buying a new desktop machine to complement my G4
powerbook.

I'm thinking 20" imac, 2.4GHz, and have a couple of questions

1. Should I wait for Leopard?

2. Most seem to come with ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO but winthrop shop
at UWA advertise Radeon X1600 Graphics card (with NVIDIA GeForce
7300GT in the 24"}. Which is better? Does it matter? I'm not a big
game player or video editor at the moment but I don't want to limit
the options.

Are there any other options I should consider? I would want 2GB RAM
but otherwise 'as advertised' seems fine.

3. There seems to be a bit more price variability than there used to
be in the apple world? Are there any special deals around at the
moment?

In terms of price i've seen:

 $2,149: 20", 2.4GHz, 1GB, 320GB, Radeon HD 2600 PRO: @
nextbyte, stirling highway
$2,069.10 20", 2.16GHz, 1GB, 250GB, Radeon X1600 : @ UWA
Campus (edu price, RRP is $2,299, they say)

Seems that it's not much of edu discount for a lesser machine. I
also saw some at Myer in Perth, just as they were closing on Sunday -
they seemed fairly cheap but I had no time - and now I'm back in
Dongara for a few weeks.

Thanks for all and any comments,

Graham

Airport/Bigpond Problem

2007-08-27 Thread Stewart Woods

Hi all,

Bit of a long shot here but I thought someone might be able to help
out...

Recently connected via ADSL with Telstra (Not by choice I can assure
you!)

Using G5 imac OS10.3.9
When the modem is connected directly to the machine, all runs fine.

However, I want to serve the net out to all 4 home machines so I plug
the modem into the Airport Base Station.

Now, email is working fine, as are Skype and Adium

BUT

Browsers always return "can't find the server at gateway.2wire.net."
Also Software Update reports an error.

When I run network diagnostics on Airport, it reports that the net is
fine.

I notice the the domain above (gateway.2wire.net.) appears in the
Airport admin utility under Internet -->Domain Name, but removing
this and applying the changes, it seems to reappear?

Obviously Telstra refer me to Apple (Well, duh!)

The same problem is evident in all machines

Any help hugely appreciated

or alternatively, if this isn't easy to solve via email, can anyone
recommend a network-savvy freelance mac person. Rob Findlay at
MacTherapy was always my main man but I haven't had a problem I
couldn't nut out for a while and I believe he no longer does this
kind of work.

many thanks in advance

Stewart
