Hi all, My apologies for one of my posts yesterday. I replied to a digest and didn't delete all the posts from the digest. I know we all have 'cut and paste' moments but I'll be more diligent in future! Re: MacBooks for Teachers WA
Hello WAMUGers, Many thanks to everyone who has replied with positive feedback to my question. I appreciate it greatly, and feel sure that now my Son-n-Law will make the right decision and get a MacBook. He is very pleased with all the positives that we have received and finally believes that it is the way to go. I have told him I will install Parallels and create a VM with Vista Ultimate on his MacBook when he receives it and he will then have The Best Of Both Worlds! Once again many thanks for all your help. If I need more assistance, I know who to ask ;-) Thank you. Hi Ronni, I don't know that you can include 'Windows Vista' in a comment that says 'Best of Both Worlds'!!! ;-) Anyway - I would recommend you don't install Vista Ultimate. If he is going to use his MacBook on a DET school network then it is best if you install Windows XP Pro. If you do, then even if there are issues in future he can get support from Customer Services just by saying I'm using my Windows XP Notebook than by trying to explain that he has Vista Ultimate running on a Mac! Vista may actually work - but if it doesn't work with the school servers because of login scripts or group policies then it will be impossible to get support and that makes it a painful exercise. Technically you should be able to get a copy of Windows XP Pro OEM as long as it is installed within 90 days of purchase (it may actually be 30 days now). Thanks to those who replied suggesting several suitable programming packages. I think I will 'save my pennies' and go for the RealBasic option, as it seems to offer the simplicity that I'm looking for. Again many thanks to those who replied. Re: MacBooks for Teachers WA
Hi Ronni You've received good advice about the MacBook. Here's my tuppenys-worth! But I take on board what you are saying in regard to DET School Network. I think I have a copy of Windows XP Pro somewhere in my Computer room. My DET leased MacBook was one of the first ones and has a relatively small hard drive. DET had partitioned it to carry a disk restore volume. I deleted that, made a copy of the DET profile on an external drive, reformatted into one partition and reinstalled the DET profile. It works perfectly. In fact DET later offered to do this for us if we didn't mind not having the restore volume. I'm not sure what the current status is for this - perhaps someone else might know. Anyway, it's easy enough to access the internet from within the school network, just get the proxy settings from a Windows machine (in IE properties) type in your DET user name (number) and password and you're on your way. You should also be able to print. My MacBook did a Bonjour search and connected that way to 2 of the printers, including our Toshiba networked copier/printer, although you might need to fiddle around with the various printer options depending on what's being used in the school. So far, no need for the Help Desk. However accessing the Curriculum and Admin servers is trickier. A nice young man from the DET Help Desk helped me. He was their Mac Guy. Sorry, can't remember his name and that's unfortunate. Because my school is/was a 100 Schools LwICT school, he told me all the settings to put into the Go/Connect to Server pane as we were allowed to have Macs in the network. Something like admin\E0xx where is the school code and the E0xx is your DET ID number, then use your current DET password. These settings allowed me to access all admin and curriculum servers including student folders. As a deputy principal I need both admin and curriculum access. Unfortunately something happened a few months later and my settings no longer work. I haven't bothered following that part up because I've got an admin PC (Lenovo Thinkthingy) and use that for the non-creative things like email, Integris, reports etc but I should find out why my settings no longer work. Don't let that deter you or your nephew. I had previously installed the school's DET Windows XP SP1 as a Virtual PC7 machine and spent several weekends updating it on-line to XP2, with MS Office IE and a good quality freeware virus program (AVG Free Edition). I read on this list that VMware could install the VPC machine on the MacBook so I downloaded the demo of VMWare Fusion and VMWare Importer and it did just that. Now I have VMWare and XP2 running on the MacBook. I haven't tried hooking it into the school network but It should be possible. You may need Help Desk advice there and I'd puzzle on their response especially in my instance as I don't have the DET Windows profile. Perhaps there's a way to access the DET setup profiles on the school's admin server. As far as Integris is concerned, remember that reporting can be done using a web browser from home or school. You don't have the full functionality of Integris but you could easily do reporting/levelling from school on the MacBook. It runs really well in my Camino but Safari doesn't like it much! If you *must* have Integris, you will need Windows, unless, like Blitto, your school uses a terminal server setup. Mine doesn't. I wonder if it could run in another form of emulator? Not sure - sounds too techy for me today but some wonderful boffin on WAMUG might know... Hope this is of some help. In the next few weeks I'm getting a new one and I'll be putting Bootcamp on that as well as a partition running Parallels. The mac will access the network with no problems at all. The PC servers don't know it is a mac. As IP addresses are handed out by DHCP the Mac gets an address just like any other device. Now install whatever printers you want. Any teacher can access all of the Admin drives by going to the GO menu and selecting connect to server. the user then types smb://name of school server Then up pops the normal windows logon window. The only real difference is that you have to log on to each shared folder or drive separately. You now have access to all files and folders on the windows server that you would under a windows logon. One great thing about using a mac is that none of the windows scripts will work so you aren't controlled

Hi all, I did all my reports using Safari 3 from home through the portal. Worked really well. Although, save often as some saves didn't work. Not sure if that was cause of Safari of not. For those interested, I also did them (reports) using MacSpeech Dictate - it typed my speech right into the comment box. Had about 95% accuracy, but still saved a heap of time. Re connecting to school servers - I was told at the beginning of the year, Macs don't support the security protocols, so you can't connect using OSX. Our IT guy (comes in once a week) is so anti-Mac it's not funny. So I have to switch to Boot Camp to get internet and access to shared drives. Can't wait to try Ronni and Reg's suggestions - tomorrow! cheers Travis 2008/6/15 Ronda Brown [EMAIL PROTECTED]: On 15/06/2008, at 5:37 PM, Reg Whitely wrote: Hi Ronni You've received good advice about the MacBook. Re: Accounting with OSX?
Hello Paul I like Moneyworks from Cognito Software in New Zealand. http://cognito.co.nz/ It is automatically geared up for Australian, NZ and Canadian GST etc. However it is more a book keeping application than a full accounting package. MYOB was way too sophisticated for my needs where Moneyworks is much more user friendly. It's available for Mac and PC and they will send a free package to your accountant if you buy it. Files can be exported and read on both platforms in several ways. It is also compatible with MYOB and other applications and my accountant likes it because it can create some fairly useful reports. There's a free demo that can be converted to fully working version if you buy one of the packaged options. When I purchased it, I looked at other apps, some of which were cheaper or even free, but I found that this program was written specifically for Australian small businesses. As I recall, the problems have had 2 solutions: 1. Run MYOB as an administrator which MYOB, bless 'em, have recommended in the past. Not sure if they still do. 2. Adjust the permissions on the MYOB folder - get info on the folder. Mine are all set to Read Write on my Intel mac running leopard. To get this simple piece of advice out of MYOB, I had a stand-up fight with the telephone support who knew the answer to my problem but refused to give it to me unless I paid for a year's support. BTW have just switched to Leopard and there might be some printing problems which so far I have worked around as I recall by sending to pdf file. Funny mob MYOB. If I didn't need payroll I would consider Moneyworks from Cognito in NZ. Re: MacBooks for Teachers WA
Re connecting to school servers - I was told at the beginning of the year, Macs don't support the security protocols, so you can't connect using OSX. Our IT guy (comes in once a week) is so anti-Mac it's not funny. So I have to switch to Boot Camp to get internet and access to shared drives. Can't wait to try Ronni and Reg's suggestions - tomorrow! cheers Travis Hi Travis, The anti-Mac guys are out there! It pays to remember these guys know nothing else and generally protect their territory. If you try to prove them wrong they just arc up, and up go the blinkers. It is unfortunate. With some, you can subtley show the benefits and bring them over the the light! I have done this myself with about 6 or so IT guys who are now MacBook Pro users and lining up for iPhones. When I see the results and improvements in students at a school that has gone from using Word and Publisher, to creating with iPhoto, iMovie and Pages I am always amazed. And it happens at all ages. It is unfortunate that ICT 'people' see the only way to manage networks is to go down the Windows / Group Policy lockdown path. I understand the why, especially on Administration networks, but there can still be structure in having a creative curriculum learning environment. In your case Travis, there is a single registry setting (part of the domain server security policy) that can make it difficult for Mac users to connect to a share. It is not that Mac's don't support security protocols, it is that Microsoft don't always follow standards. You can actually join your Mac (OSX) to the domain and login with your standard username and password. Then you can connect to a share (with your username and password) and then add that to your startup items so that next time you login it will automatically connect. I've had some fun with ICT support guys. I went to one school where they wanted an iMac able to access the Internet. No worries. Can I have your proxy settings please. Oh no, they say, It can't go on the network!. Their IT guy said a Mac would not run on their network, so just connect it to the wireless. huh?. I asked them how much they were paying this guy. :-) I ended up drawing their network for them to prove that I had to connect it to the network to get Internet and that it would not cause any server issues. At another private school, the Principal and Head of Curriculum both were mightily impressed by our demonstration of what a Mac could do for their learning environment. By the time we called back, their IT guy had told them he couldn't support Macs and he would walk out. huh? So who is running the school? Good luck to all Mac users at schools and feel free to ask questions if you have road blocks. I may have the answers. Remember, anything is possible! Oh, and the guy at DET for Apple support for schools that are LWCIT/GDSOE/100 schools is Paul Lewis.
