Dropbox

2008-10-02 Thread Glenn Nicholas
Hi Wamuggers,

I've been using various sync / file sharing / backup products over the
years, looking for something that solves backup as well as replicated
file sharing for business. And I've had a .mac/mobileme account for
ages, but it doesn't do everything I want.

If you want an offsite backup solution and web enabled file sharing
then you should check out Dropbox (getdropbox.com). Watch the video
and you'll get the point.

You can use for backup or file sharing (think of this as an internet
enabled network drive). And also public folders (with a gallery mode
for pictures). Totally integrated with the Mac Finder (and
Windows/Linux as well).

2Gb of space with the free plan, and looks like they will be charging
$10/mth for 50Gb soon. You can be up and running with the free 2Gb
plan to try it out in a matter of minutes.

I know MobileMe has some nice Picture publishing features, but I've
found in practice these are a lot harder to use than they look at
first. Dropbox is dead easy.

For the technically minded, your data is replicated to an Amazon S3 data store.

For the even more technically minded (and security-paranoid), you can
setup your own automated backups to your own S3 account using a Ruby
script.
http://vallery.net/2008/02/01/using-amazon-s3-to-automatically-backup-your-mac/
(this works really well, but the setup isn't for the faint hearted).
If you want to backup a lot of data, this might be better.

As an added bonus, iiNet doesn't seem to count uploads to your
bandwidth allocation.

S3 is incredibly low cost. We use it for offsite backup for hundreds
of Gb of material and the monthly bill is around $5. Quite amazing
really.

If you get your head around these approaches, you can have your
offsite backups fully automated - big bonus if you run a business
online. And web enabled file sharing to boot.

Glenn.

Hello Michael,

From http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20080929133440824
Some users have reported an issue wherein, after applying Security
Update 2008-006 for Mac OS X 10.4.11, their systems repeatedly
display the message "Your network settings have been changed by
another application." This message is sometimes accompanied by
dropous in wireless connectivity.

The potential fix is as follows:

Delete the following files from Library/Preferences/
SystemConfiguration

• com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
• NetworkInterfaces.plist
• preferences.plist
• com.apple.nat.plist
then restart.

NB. I would suggest if you have many settings in your Network
location you should copy all of that information somewhere and then
move, instead of delete, the above files to your desktop until you
know the problem is fixed before you trash them so you can retrieve
this information later if needed.

Re: importing applications

2008-10-02 Thread Eugene
As far as I'm aware most applications will run quite comfortably no
matter where they are located.

It is really a house keeping issue just like most people keep food in
the pantry rather than the laundry the Mac OS prefers things to be
located in certain places. If an installer / uninstaller or updater
wants to locate an application or its parts it will endeavour to find
the components in particular places. This more important for
preferences and application support items.

  Eugene

Hello Martin,

Make sure all software is installed in the Hard Drive -> Applications
folder.

That's the default place they are installed and accessible to all users.

You do not need the CUPS driver. The Canon MX850 printer drivers will
work.

Download the latest drivers for it from:

It's worth a trip to www.canon.com to have a look at the list of
current drivers. When I installed my MP970 earlier this year I found
that while the supplied Tiger drivers worked well enough, some of the
more esoteric aspects such as network printing and scanning were a
little problematic. A trip to the Canon site showed that there was a
whole suite of updated drivers for Leopard which I promptly downloaded
and installed. The few problems I did have immediately disappeared.

There may only be one causing a problem ( but which one ) and this

you can export/import activity slips.

You can also set up separate users with their own passwords and

I hear the resignation in your voicelike you, I had no choice but

At least we got a price reduction in the plans at the end of August
(though extra usage increased to 0.25c/MB)
but, compared to ADSL users, we are still getting taken to the

I may go with the Ethermax...but Gary has just emailed me off list

I find that the modem itself needs to be rebooted from time to time

To summarise, if you are keen to use an outrageously expensive,
slow service

The BigPond USB modem will not allow me to use the inbuilt Internet

If I want to Network my computers (via hub & Cables) I have to

Maxon website suggests the Ethermax Docking Station is the

Re: NAB Banking

2008-10-02 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Martin,

You have checked your Network Settings and every setting, DNS numbers,
no proxies, etc are as before this problem happened?

You have checked that Parental Controls has not been turned on?
You have restarted your Modem?
You have restarted your Mac?
You have repaired permissions?

After doing all above, you have tried the NAB Site again and the same
problem exists?

You could try Starting in "Safe Mode" after having started up in
"Safe Mode", restart normally.

To start up into Safe Mode, do this:
1. Be sure the computer is shut down.
2. Press the power button.
	3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the
Shift key.
Tip: The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the
startup tone but not before.
	4. Release the Shift key when you see the grey Apple and progress
indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you will see "Safe Boot"
on the login window
