Re: Birthday Reminders/iCal

2008-10-05 Thread Dark1
I didn't realise the address book held birthday information but I've
been adding events labeled birthdays/all day events to iCal and having
them repeat yearly forever.

Hi Stuart,

I find it's great, does exactly what I want.
It will expire after 3 weeks unless you purchase a registration code
to register Dates to iCal.
You register from the 'Dates to iCal' application it takes you to
Paypal it only costs £3.00 GBP = $7.07 AUD
I find it well worth the price I haven't forgotten anyone's
Birthday/Anniversary since having it ;-)

After installing Dates to iCal2,
Start Dates to iCal 2.
Set the preferences you want.
Click Activate from the General tab.
Quit Dates to iCal.

iCal can become unresponsive for a few seconds after Dates to iCal
is activated or deactivated. This is due to iCal updating the
changes to its database.

You may prefer to stop iCal before modifying Dates to iCal's
settings, especially if you have a large number of dates stored in
Address Book.

I found it best to QUIT iCal and then wait a while before Opening
iCal, so you give it time to update the changes to the database.

Cheers,

Ronni

Hello Stuart,

I had been trying to find a way how to set alarms reminders for
Birthdays in iCal for so long I had given up ... until I found
'Dates to iCal 2'.

As well as automatically syncing birthday dates from Address
Book, Dates to iCal 2 can sync anniversary and custom dates. It
can set up to five alarms for each date in iCal and can also set
different alarms for birthdays and anniversaries. It allows the
option of only syncing from one Address Book group. This
application also allows for the titles of the events sent to iCal
to be modified to the user's preference.

iPhoto difficulty

2008-10-05 Thread Severin Crisp
I am running iPhoto 7.1.4 with 10.5.5 and use iPhoto Library to manage
a number of libraries. In one library a small number of the photos
display with a couple of white lines across the thumbnails. The full
size pictures are fine, the white lines display when the photo is
first expanded, then disappear. The affected few thumbnails are
contiguous and the lines seem independent of the size of the thumbnail.

Cause and solution, please?
I am sure Ronni will have an instant answer for this one!

Hi Severin,

I think you need to rebuild the Thumbnails in that iPhoto Library.
Have a backup of this Library just in case anything goes 'not
according to plan'.

 1. Quit iPhoto.

 2. While holding the Command and Option keys on the keyboard, open
iPhoto.

 3. A dialogue box appears, select the option to Rebuild the
photos' small thumbnails. OR Rebuild all the photos thumbnails (this
may take awhile)

  Click Rebuild.

Communal email inbox ?

2008-10-05 Thread Steven Knowles
Could I please pick the communal brain of wamug and ask people how
they would set things up if they wanted to create a communal email
inbox, either on a multiple Mac / Windows wireless network, or if
necessary involving the internet?

I haven't been able to find a way of allowing 3rd parties to access a
particular email inbox on my Apple Mail client, so I'll assume that's
not possible.

Since I have a Time Capsule for backups, I don't suppose there is a
way of using Time Capsule as some kind of mail server is there? If
necessary I could buy some additional hardware, if that was going to
provide a good solution - but I'm afraid the whole concept of severs,
despite having a very basic understanding of what they do, is new to
me. Ideally I would like multiple users to be able to access a
standalone version of Apple Mail and the relevant inbox.

In previous environments, I've worked in a Windows Outlook
environment, and apart from my own personal email inbox, there has
been public folders as well which anyone on the network could access.
Does the same kind of concept exist in an Apple Mail environment?
Because that would probably work. If so, how do I go about setting it
up?

I'm guessing I'm trying to move things from a couple of individual
Macs in a wireless network environment, to a more corporate
environment, with access to public mailboxes from both local machines,
but also from the other side of the world (which I presume will
involve the internet, or 3rd party servers, or something).

I'm obviously confused, but would welcome a few thoughts and ideas
thrown at me. There are probably a million solutions, most of them
quite simple, but I'm not sure I know where to start.

Cheers, Steven

Managing time spent on projects is essential, even more so if your work
freelance. TimeLog is built to work with iCal, to keep track of time spent
on different projects. With an interface at crossroads between iTunes and
iCal, TimeLog gives you an immediate view of your different projects.

TimeLog allows you to create smart lists to better organize your projects
and can analyze them based on all criteria like billing, time or project
type. You'll also notice that it features automatic timer and billing, so
you don't have to go around worrying about these. The most useful feature is
the red record button at the top left of the interface, which will allow you
to launch the time spent on projects and calculate your rates precisely.

As a general rule, communal mailboxes are set up by your e-mail

hi everyone

If yes what is the difference?
Martin

It very much depends on the application. Without exception, those
applications which come as part of Mac OS X (iCal, Mail, Address Book,
Font Book, etc) MUST be installed in the Applications folder and must
remain there, they must be located at the top level of the folder (ie,
not in a subfolder), and must not be renamed. This also applies to
many other Apple-supplied applications, such as the members of the
iLife suite. One exception to all of this is iWork, whose applications
CAN be placed inside a subfolder.

The principle reason for this is that Mac OS X uses a system of
document verification called Receipts. It's instructive to have a
look inside /Library/Receipts on your hard drive. Receipts are package
files that are saved on your hard drove every time an installer does
its work, and is a repository for a list of the files and resources
which were installed for that application.

When an application such as Apple Mail is updated (as part of a
system update, for example), the presence of a Receipt package is
checked, and the information it contains is used to increase the
efficiency of the update (which files need to be replaced, etc).
PLEASE NOTE: If you move an Apple-supplied application out of the
Applications folder, the Receipt file will not know, and future
updates will not work as expected, if at all. This is very important
to understand.

Most other applications you will ever install into Mac OS X can be
installed pretty much wherever you like, whether they have a Receipt
file or not. Generally, applications fall under two broad
classifications: those which require an Installer and those which do
not (are installed simply by dragging to their location).

In some cases an Installer will offer you the chance to specify the
installation location; others will not. Some of this latter group also
require the application to remain in the Applications Folder, although
this is rare.

Hope this helps,

Ronni

HI there

When you enter a birthday in a contact in Address Book this
birthday will show as an event in iCal. However you can not edit
these events so that you can set reminders.

Any suggestions on how you can set reminders for these events?

Hello Stuart,

I had been trying to find a way how to set alarms reminders for
Birthdays in iCal for so long I had given up ... until I found
'Dates to iCal 2'.

As well as automatically syncing birthday dates from Address
Book, Dates to iCal 2 can sync anniversary and custom dates. It
can set up to five alarms for each date in iCal and can also set
different alarms for birthdays and anniversaries. It allows the
option of only syncing from one Address Book group. This
application also allows for the titles of the events sent to iCal
to be modified to the user's preference.

Martin,

People have given you a lot of suggestions re this problem, BUT, you
have not replied to the list if you have tried all the suggestions.
We cannot help you more if we don't know if you have tried all these
suggestions, or what you have done to try to rectify this problem.

Rod Blitvich suggested:

I eventually wondered whether it was something to do with our router
which

was few years old.
I finally bought a new router (from Daniel) and guess what? No more
Internet

Banking problems.

and Rod Blitvich again today

I had a similar problem with Westpac.
When I purchased a new router it disappeared and all worked fine.
(even

though the old router appeared to function normally)

I suggested:

Is there a Firmware Update for your Modem/Router?
Check your Network Configuration settings in System Preferences
Network - that you have all the correct settings in your ISP's DNS
numbers.

Restart your Modem/Router.

and

You have checked your Network Settings and every setting, DNS
numbers, no proxies, etc are as before this problem happened?

You have checked that Parental Controls has not been turned on?
You have restarted your Modem?
You have restarted your Mac?
You have repaired permissions?

After doing all above, you have tried the NAB Site again and the
same problem exists?

You could try Starting in Safe Mode after having started up
in Safe Mode, restart normally.

To start up into Safe Mode, do this:
1. Be sure the computer is shut down.
2. Press the power button.
	3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the
Shift key.
Tip: The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the
startup tone but not before.
	4. Release the Shift key when you see the grey Apple and progress
indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you will see Safe
Boot on the login window

Robert Howells suggested:

Have you cleared cookies .

Safari preferences - Security - click on Show cookies - and
click onRemove All .

There may only be one causing a problem ( but which one ) and this
is the sledge hammer approach.

Quitand then Restart Safari

then check your nab site

Daniel Kerr again today suggests:
Have you tried loading in your ISPs DNS details into the DNS
settings of

System Preferences / Network to see if that makes a difference?
Some ISPs it does seem to help.

Ronni

AppleWorks 6 page setup

2008-10-05 Thread Mervyn Giuliana Bond

Running an intel iMac on 10.5.5
I can't remember when the problem with AppleWorks 6.2.9 started on
the iMac but here it is: I opened an existing document and then
selected Page Setup. Made my choice and clicked OK. The contents of
the document seemed to slip to the left and leave me with a dark grey
page. At the time I was using an OKIPage 8 printer that is on my
wife's iBook G4 on 10.4.11 power PC. There is no driver for the OKI
on intel. Assuming this was the problem I tried the same procedure
for the Epson Stylus C61 which has a driver on my computer and is
connected to my computer. Same result.
Thinking the existing document might be corrupted in some way I tried
a new document but got the same result.

Suggestions appreciated.
Merv
