I have scanned literally hundreds of old photos and slides using a HP
Scanjet 3010. Not the fastest but I have been very pleased with the
results. Where necessary I adjust using Adobe Elements 6 and print on
an Epson R290.

Check in Internet Explorer Properties.

Hi Rob,

If it's primarily the navbar that's the biggest issue you can create
your own text based navbar

that would work in all browsers.
Be sure to use a web safe font for the navbar.

The navbar that is generated by iWeb is all javascript based and the
IE browsers are not that java savvy. Hence the text based navbar.

Iweb08 and IE 7

Thanks all for the quick responses.
Have javascript enabled.

Glenn thanks for that site. Testing the site using browsershots.org
clearly shows that it will not work.

On searching the web for problems it seems that iweb 08 will not work
with IE 7 on XP.

Solution seem to be to use iweb 06 which will work.
Or as customers to download Firefox.

Thanks again.

Rob, to see how it looks on different versions of IE, use browsershots.org

Use Safari, View, View Source to find the actual link that won't
display on IE and check how the link is constructed. Post it here if

Re: iCal Alarmist

2008-10-24 Thread Ronda Brown

Are you using Leopard OSX10.5 or later?

Turn off the Birthday option then try Dates to iCal 2 from
Setup it's Preferences: Dates to iCal has several options you can set
for what is transferred from Address Book to iCal.
These options are broken into three sections, General, Titles and
Alarms. You can access these by clicking the icons on Dates to iCal's
title bar.

I was happy to pay the $6AU for it for all the extra information it
added to my iCal from my address book.

Before finding "Dates to iCal 2" I was doing the same as Barry Sexstone.
But, as Barry has said

has no links to addresses
This "Dates to iCal 2" does so much more and uses information you have
inserted into Address Book.

Ronni

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. For anyone remotely interested,
after taking all the comments on board, I ended up getting it done
with Migration Assistant. With limited disk space on my MBP, I deleted
my own user account (being the old one), which freed up just enough to
get everything across except some movie files, so I left those out,
and then transferred those across afterwards after cleaning things up.

Recommend you do this if you possibly can

Unfortunately They are two separate sets of disks

Fwd: How to transfer MacBook user content to MacBook Pro ?

2008-10-24 Thread Ronda Brown

Sorry Steven,

I'm sending a retraction to the list.
I just read Steven's email through again thoroughly and noticed he
only has 10GB free space.
Migration Assistant will not work, as it will create a new account
with all the data,..and it won't transfer as there won't be enough room.

Also I didn't think about the user 'shortname' could be the same
if the user "shortname" is the same, it won't let him either.
I seem to remember having trouble on someone's computer that I was
transferring everything across that had the same "shortname".

Cheers,
Ronni

had to go and buy a new MacBook (MB) and restore my system from
Time Capsule.

Now I have my MBP back. The data is as it was at the point the
logic board blew up, ie. outdated. What I want to do is put my
system as it is now on my MB (current) on to the MBP.

What I don't want to do though is have to reinstall the entire
system (MacOSX) on my MBP because I don't have the original install
disks for another week, and ideally I need to do this today.

What's the safest, cleanest, quickest and best way to do this? I
have a firewire cable handy so that I can connect the MB & MBP if I
need to. The disk on each is about 160Gb but with only 10Gb room
left.

I thought that should be a way of syncing the MBP with the TIme
Capsule (which is currently back up by with MB data), but I'm
afraid that what would happen is that the Time Capsule data would
be overwritten by the month old MBP data.

Grateful for any tips.

Cheers, Steven

Hi Steven,

Why not use Migration Assistant (Applications > Utilities) &
Firewire Target Disk Mode.

1. Shutdown the MB, Connect a Firewire Cable to MB
2. Startup MB & immediately press & hold the T key until the
Firewire Icon appears.
3. Connect the firewire cable from MB to MBP (MacBook Pro can be
running)

4. Run Migration Assistant
5. Transfer Users Accounts, Applications (but if the Apps are the
same don't select this), Network & Computer settings, Files, Volumes.
6. When you are finished transferring, drag the MB computer's hard
disk icon to the Trash or Eject from the File menu.

7. Press the MB power button to turn it off.
8. Unplug the FireWire cable.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: How to transfer MacBook user content to MacBook Pro ?

2008-10-24 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi Steven & Ronni,

Ronni, if you go this route what happens when you try and migrate "user 1'
from the current system to the old system that already has a "user 1"
account.

Does it just overwrite the old account files or does it put them in an "old
user 1" folder and install the new user account. If the former - no problem,
but I sort of expect the latter (I don't know!) - in which case Steven may
have a problem with his disc already being full.

Cheers

Hi Neil,

Old and new DNS information -- yes, this is due to the
behind-the-scenes mechanics. When you type in a name, it is translated
by the database of *your* DNS server, which got the data from *its*
DNS server, which got the data from *its* DNS server, and this chain
continues all the way back to the "authoritative" server. You do not
directly query the authoritative server, because then the whole world
of computers would be hitting large servers (like ".com") a squillion
times per second (which would be slow, costly, and less reliable for
your ISP). Instead, you query your own DNS server, which gives you the
latest copy of the info it has. But this isn't always the absolute
latest information. Occasionally this is bad (because you're out of
date compared to the authoritative servers) and occasionally it's good
(because corrupt records in the authoritative servers get corrected
before they reach you).

Re: How to transfer MacBook user content to MacBook Pro ?

2008-10-24 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi Steven,

Two things:

First - back-ups:

You already have a time machine backup of your old Mac book Pro.

You don't say if you also have a back-up of the current Macbook set-up. If
not - do that first! That way you have a back-up of everything (old machine
& new machine) if anything goes wrong!

If your Time capsule has enough space on it, you can use it as a Time
machine back-up and back-up your new Macbook - it won't overwrite the Time
machine back-up for the Macbook Pro it will just create a separate folder
for the new computer and back-it up.

The other thing you could do is use superduper to clone the current Macbook
set-up - ideally to a spare firewire drive, if you have one lying around :)
if not you should be able to clone it to disk image on the Time capsule -
again this is subject to available space, but since your Time capsule is at
least 500GB and your laptops only have 160GB drives, I'm guessing you have a
bit of free space.

Next:

You have a number of options to get your repaired Macbook Pro up to speed.

My preferred option would be a clean install on the repaired Macbook pro and
then migrate everything over from the current Macbook.

You say you don't want to do this because you don't have the original
install discs - have you tried using the install discs that came with the
new Macbook - typically they only work with the same model but I'm not sure
how Apple differentiates this - for example the install discs from an iMac
won't work with a Macbook but I don't know if the Macbook/Macbook Pro are
different - you could try it in my experience it will either work or say
something like "this software cannot be installed on this computer".

Kyles suggestion of cloning the drive over would be my preferred option if
the two machines were identical - I have never tried it between two
different models. It would not be an option if say one was intel and the
other was a G5. Assuming the are both intel machines, I would try and
confirm with someone that they had done this before on two comparable
machines - if so -go for it. If you were able to clone the new system to an
external firewire drive, just try and boot from it - if it boots up and all
works OK you should be able to just clone it to the Macbook Pro.

You don't say in what state the old Macbook pro is in - was it returned with
the disc as per your original set-up or is it wiped clean.. The above
approaches will work anyway. Bob's suggestion assumes that your disc is as
the original set-up. I would also repeat his caution about trying it with
your discs being so full - I have found in this case you have problems with
superduper not having enough space to shuffle things around as it updates.

Also how many user accounts do you have. The first thing I do is set up my
initial account as Admin and get the computer up to speed (updates etc) then
setup my user account. With this setup I would login to the old machine as
admin and delete the user account, then migrate the user account over from
the new machine. However, you can't do this if you only have one account or
need to migrate them all.

Also a word of caution with multiple users and migrating - this should not
be a problem if you do it when setting up a machine. However if you migrate
users over later you can end up with accounts with the same names and
different ID numbers and permissions nightmares (a bad thing!).

Hope that helps.

Cheers

Hi Steven,

Why not use Migration Assistant (Applications > Utilities) & Firewire
Target Disk Mode.

1. Shutdown the MB, Connect a Firewire Cable to MB
2. Startup MB & immediately press & hold the T key until the Firewire
Icon appears.
3. Connect the firewire cable from MB to MBP (MacBook Pro can be
running)

4. Run Migration Assistant
5. Transfer Users Accounts, Applications (but if the Apps are the same
don't select this), Network & Computer settings, Files, Volumes.
6. When you are finished transferring, drag the MB computer's hard
disk icon to the Trash or Eject from the File menu.

7. Press the MB power button to turn it off.
8. Unplug the FireWire cable.

Yes , but that will take an age !

Using Superduper you could just update the USERS files
and that would be much faster ..
assuming of course that you have not changed your software in any way .

Your SMALL spare disk space may cause you some grief , and is probably
causing

your Mac to run slower than it possible could run .

Having something like 20% spare space is a much better option . Try
and plan to

offload something
