I've have Macbook Pro

3 GB 667 MHz DDr 2 SDRAM

My husband's is Macbook
1.83 GH Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB 667 DDr2 2 sdram

MacBook Pro - turns off without warning when no AC

2009-02-06 Thread Steven Knowles
My Intel Core 2 Duo 17 MacBook Pro, when unplugged from an AC power
supply, will turn off without any warning when the battery runs down
to what seems to be a point where the laptop should still be running
on battery power.

It's just happened to me again, and upon connecting the MacBook Pro to
an AC power supply and restarting, the battery indicator was over 30%.

I've heard of resetting PMUs before, but from what I can gather that
seems to apply more to PowerBooks (eg. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431?viewlocale=en_US
).

This forum http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=509314
indicates a similar problem to mine, and suggests a dud battery. The
machine I have is within the extended 3-year warranty period, though
it seems that the extended warranty doesn't apply to batteries.

Any other suggestions before I resign to what is looking like purchase
of another battery? In case it makes any difference, my Mac is
connected to an AC power supply about 95% of the time.

Cheers, Steven

Installing a font into Entourage

2009-02-06 Thread Denise Williams
Hi All
Using iMac OSX vers10.4.11.

Can anyone please tell me how I can install a particular font (that is
sitting in my Hard drive - Library - Fonts) into Entourage. I want to use it
in my emails. But will I then have the problem of it not being accepted by
other people's email programmes (it is an unusual font)?
Thanks for any help

Re: puzzle

2009-02-06 Thread James Devenish
Hi Rosemary,

Is ther a difference in the amount of metal versus plastic in the
MacBook and MacBook Pro cases? Generally speaking, plastic won't
interefere with wireless reception while metal casing will actually
block the signal, and this means reception is more finicky when the
signal is weak. It sounds like the new location of your modem is
problematic. Steel and metal objects in your home could be a
particular problem.

James.

Re: Installing a font into Entourage

2009-02-06 Thread James / Hans Kunz

generally
selected fonts appear in the receivers letter only if they are in the
system of the receivers computer,

you may have to 'activate' your new font to get it visible (can you
use it in other word processing apps?) with fontbook you can activate
or put aside...

hope this helps James

Re: MacBook Pro - turns off without warning when no AC

2009-02-06 Thread James Devenish
Hi Steven,

You're right that PMU applies to PowerPC hardware only. For Intels,
it's SMC (System Management Controller), so search for that instead.
Battery Calibration can be a problem -- if the battery cannot guage
its capacity properly then you will have premature cut-outs. You can
re-calibrate the battery by following the instructions in your
hardware User Guide (I think the rule of thumb is once per month to be
on the safe side over the life of the battery).

James.

Re: MacBook Pro - turns off without warning when no AC

2009-02-06 Thread Travis Hansen
Steve,
This is a very common problem.
There's heaps to try:
Calibrate battery (as James said):
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh2339.html
Battery Firmware update:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Battery_Update_1_2 (depending on
your model)
See if you qualify for new battery:
http://www.apple.com/au/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/
Check battery for bulging - Read this WAMUG thread from 29 Jan 09:
MacBook Pro Battery Warning (finished one)
This list is probably not exhaustive. Good luck.
cheers
Travis

Hi, Matt Healey emailed recently to let me know that the Ozmac mail
service is finishing.

I want to delete my Ozmac mail box and account in my Mail App, as the
off-line symbol next to it is annoying.

Mail help says that deleting a mailbox permanently deletes the
mailbox and its contents, and cannot be undone.

I have taken all of the messages out of the Ozmac mailbox and put them
in other on My Mac mailboxes, but I am concerned that deleting the
Ozmac mailbox may still delete the messages that originated from it.
Please tell me it isn't so and that I am being paranoid.

Thanks

Matt Falvey

Matt

So you want to be SURE :-

You should be able to find the relevant sent messages in

hard drive - users - Library - mail - pop address for ozmac - Sent
messages.mbox - messages

Create a new folder somewhere on your drive ,
highlight all the messages in the send messages box
do an Apple D to duplicate them

then drag all the duplicates to the folder you have just created .

So now you have a copy !

Hi Tom,

I have had issues with Safari for over a year now.

It crashes on startup everytime.

I have upgraded to the latest version, deleted every preference I
could find that had the word safari in it, reset the permissions, all
to no avail.

Firefox is now my browser of choice, it also has more useful plugins
anyway.
