Phantom e-mail

2009-03-10 Thread Norman Leslie

Hi,

I notice there have been several postings of late about Mac Mail
problems.

I too am experiencing a problem with Mac Mail [v3.5] running on 10.5.6
- I get phantom messages without a sender or subject, only a date. I
have done some checking - it does seem to be an issue on Apple
Discussions but no cure.

http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9082321

This is not an issue with BigPond mail.

I have run Disk Utility and Yasu, but that didn't help.

Anyone else experiencing this phenomenon? Any suggested causes? Better
still any possible cures!!

Hello Norman,

I have not received any of these Phantom "SPAM" emails. But, they have
been around for years though.

Select one of the blank messages and View>Message>Long Headers.

If you look through the detailed headers you will see where the
content of the message starts.
It's likely that the message was created by a 'zombie' system that
someone has taken over for the purposes of sending spam, and that the
program creating the spam message is messing up the format of the
email it's sending - which means that your email reader can't find the
sender, recipient, subject etc. where it expects them in the message.

Just delete the messages - you're definitely not missing anything!

Cheers,
Ronni

I guess I should consider myself lucky that I have only started

I didn't open them, I marked them as Junk and went to Delete Junk Mail

From the WAMUG archives :

The problem you are having with winmail.dat is that your friends are
sending from M$ Outlook (not express) using the M$ rich text option.
POP mail clients can't interpret this RTF and so it gets transformed
into winmail.dat or application/tnef or something like that.
It makes attachments unreadable. The remedy - a utility called TNEF's
Enough.
I can't remember where I got it but it works a treat. Try download.com
or kagi.com or versiontracker.com.
You save the winmail.dat file and open it in TNEFs Enough and it
extracts the attachments.

There is no upgrade price. You just have to buy a new version.
Fortunately, the price even for a new version is less than the upgrade

2009-03-10 Thread Paul Mulroney

Hi

I use a bluetooth earpiece when driving, because although the iPhone
has a "hands free" speakerphone mode, it's not really loud enough for
the car.

Adrian, I don't think it's possible to attach an external aerial to
the iPhone, so you're out of luck on that front. However, you should
still be able to use bluetooth with you iPhone without any problems.
For charging, you need something like the Griffin car accessories for
the iPhone - it comes with a car charger adaptor.

Paul.

I'm using a Belkin Roadtrip very successfully with my iPhone. Even
though it is an older model and intended for iPods (the iPhone reminds

MacPro Fans in Overdrive

2009-03-10 Thread chesnutt
Hi List,

I recently bought a refurbished 8 core MacPro from the Apple Online Shop. 2
gig of RAM, and running Sys 10.5.1. It is the model which has just been
superceded.

It was delivered about a week ago, but due to work commitments I only got to
unpack it yesterday. It seemed to boot fine, and I loaded and set about
running a memory test programme. All seemed well yesterday, with the whisper
quiet operation of the fans which I had previously seen in the retail shops I
had visited.

It is temporarily set up in the middle of the floor in my office, with
unrestricted airflow.

This morning I woke it from sleep, and shortly afterwards the fans came to life
both loud and strong. The air coming out seems barely warm, and the case is
not in the least warm. Upon being made to go to sleep, the fans die, and on
wakeup they kick in again. I have tried shutting down, leaving it for 15
minutes and rebooting, with only the Finder running. Same deal, really loud
fans if the machine is awake, instant quiet if I put it to sleep.

The machine is presently switched off.

Does anybody have any ideas??

Thanks,

Bill Chesnutt

No ! But it reinforces my reservations about " refurbished "
recently made gear !

Obviously the refurbished gear went back to the factory ( ? ) for some
reason .

The question always to be answered is :

Was the problem fixed OR
as in lot's of situations , did the refurbishment consist only of new
packaging ?

Hello Bill,

Normally loud fan noise and fans running fast is caused by build up of
dust. Being a refurbished unit from Apple it should be clean, you
would hope?

Check that there is no dust clogging the vent on your video card. Wipe
it with a Q-Tip and see if it fixes your problem.

Otherwise check here:

I read this on the Apple Mac Pro Discussions some time ago & kept the
text but not the link, sorry.

Quote:
"I SOLVED my fan Problem. I decided to clean my computer on the
inside. While doing so, I decided to look up how to take out the front
cooling fan on the internet, and I stumbled upon this http://macsaregreat.com/?p=63
>

My fan problem was caused by a solid layer of dust built up on the
heat sink of my ATI Radeon X1900 Graphics Card. If you go to the
article linked above, you can see a picture of how it looks.

If you aren't looking for it, you will easily miss it because it will
be a solid layer of dust covering the heat sink (plus its not the best
viewing angle to see).

I cleaned the heat sink to my card, booted my computer, fans ran loud
for 5 seconds and then slowed down and started running quietly!

I can't vouch for other video cards, but this totally fixed my
problem, even the booting up twice problem!"

Ronni

If you are talking just about making phone calls, with an extended mobile phone
range, then TH Bury (www.bury.com) have
either a dedicated cradle (Uni Take&Talk) for the 3G iphone, or a Bluetooth
cradle, with inductive aerial (Take & Talk BT). With
the latter, a separate charging cable is needed & is available for the 3G
iphone. I have used the Take & Talk BT (without a
charging cable for the iphone) connected to an external aerial and it certainly
extends the mobile phone range in rural areas,
although if hills are between you and the tower, the range extension will be
minimal. However, of itself, the Take & Talk BT
does not support the iPod function of the iPhone, at least in the car that I
have used it in.

If you are just after a hands free unit, without an external aerial, there are
a lot cheaper options than the TH Bury products.

Cannot move or delete an Incomplete Download

2009-03-10 Thread Ronda Brown

Hello WAMUGer's,

I gave a person permission to download a 373.4 MB disk image (.dmg)
from my iDisk Public Folder.
As he started the download he saw it was going to take over two hours,
so he tried to stop the download, (how I have no idea).

Eventually he ended up with a 15MB size file on his Desktop.
This incomplete file shows as a white page, which he cannot open or
move to the Trash, he receives this message when attempting to move it:

" Some of the items you are moving are in use by another application.
Moving item can cause problems with the application using them "

He says he definitely ejected my Public iDisk when he had finished
copying to his desktop by my instructions

File -> Eject 'ronni-public'

I know there are Terminal commands that could be typed to trash this
file but.
There is absolutely NO WAY I want this guy going anywhere near
Terminal ... Heaven Forbid!
He is a very basic Mac user, doesn't follow instructions well (even
with screenshots I include with my instructions), and can stuff up
anything and I mean really "Stuff Up" anything!

I remember using this in Jaguar days I think it was. Do you think it
is worth a try in Leopard 10.5.6?

1. Rename the file to "remove.rtf" (without the quotation marks)
2. Open TextEdit (/Applications/TextEdit)
3. From the File menu, choose Save As
4. Select the location where the file is located
5. Type: "remove" in the Save As field (it should be showing this)
6. Click Save, then Replace
7. Quit TextEdit
8. Drag remove.rtf to the Trash
9. Empty the Trash

Or do you have other suggestions that I could get him to do please?

I would really appreciate your thoughts.

Ronni

Hello WAMUGer's,

I gave a person permission to download a 373.4 MB disk image (.dmg)

As he started the download he saw it was going to take over two
hours, so he tried to stop the download, (how I have no idea).

Eventually he ended up with a 15MB size file on his Desktop.
This incomplete file shows as a white page, which he cannot open or
move to the Trash, he receives this message when attempting to move
it:

" Some of the items you are moving are in use by another
application. Moving item can cause problems with the application
using them "

He says he definitely ejected my Public iDisk when he had finished
copying to his desktop by my instructions

File -> Eject 'ronni-public'

Cheers,
Ronni

He needs to clear( stop ) the other application this
sometimes can be done

simply by restarting finder

failing that , a restart may do it

Sorry Bob, I should have mentioned I've had him Quit all Applications
and restart his computer numerous times.

All to no avail, the file refuses to be moved.

Ronni

Thanks Roger,

I'm sure I asked him to Repair Permissions, but that doesn't mean he
did "Repair Permissions".
I'll email him to make sure he has ... but when he checks his email is
anyone's guess ;-)

Cheers,
Ronni

Search Window

2009-03-10 Thread Travis Hansen
Hi all,
There's something that's been bugging me since upgrading to Leopard.
When I open a normal Finder window and type something in the search
field in the top right corner, it searches the contents of the files
on my mac because (of course) the "Contents" button is selected by
default. Is there a way to have the "File Name" button selected by
default when doing a search in this way? 99% of the time I only want
to search the file names.

Cheers
Travis

Re: Search Window

2009-03-10 Thread Ronda Brown

Hello Travis,

1. Bring up a search window using Command-F
2. Click on "File Name" instead of "Contents"

Below was written by Francine Schwieder:
"While there isn't a thing you can do about the toolbar default, you
CAN render it irrelevant. If you bring up the Find window using the
shortcut of Command-Shift-F, then you will get "Name:Contains" with
the cursor blinking in the blank entry field. Type the file name you
want to find, and the results will be files whose actual file name
contains whatever you typed. Furthermore, if you don't want to be
bothered by using the shift key, you can go to System Prefs-
>Keyboard&Mouse->Shortcuts and reverse the two shortcuts, so that
"Find..." with the "Kind" nonsense becomes Command-Shift-F, and "Find
by Name..." is a simple Command-F. Restart the Finder after you make
your changes, and then whenever you do Command-F you will get a search
box with "Name:Contains" and the cursor blinking in the field for you
to just type your search word-- the results will be files containing
your word in their NAME, not the content.

There still ain't a dang thing you can do about the default of
searching "This Mac" rather than the folder you were in when you
invoked the search."

You can take a look at the article she wrote on Spotlight at the link
below:

Re: Search Window

2009-03-10 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond

Travis
If I enter a word in Spotlight it initially produces a list with the
first item, Show All.
When I click on Show All a dialogue box appears and in the headings
are Contents and File Name. As you say, Contents is the default, but
a click on File Name produces what you want.

If in the Finder you go to File and Find you get the same window as
clicking on Show All in Spotlight. Click on File Name.

Seconds are precious but that is about all it takes.

You can also use key board shortcuts to open these windows. See
Spotlight preferences.
