Re: WARNING ... Safari beta users
Hi all, Also, just a heads up for those of you currently using Safari 3 plugins like Sogudi and AcidSearch: If you upgrade to Safari 4 and do not first uninstall/remove these plugins you will most likely find that Safari 4 refuses to launch. Depending on where you installed (for one user or all), removing the following folders should get Safari 4 up and running again: ~/Library/Application Support/SIMBL ~/Library/InputManagers/SIMBL Sogudi is no longer supported, hence it will not work with Safari 4. The best alternative I have found is Keywurl, although at time of writing it appears to be awaiting an upgrade to coincide with this latest Safari 4 release. We also use AutoCAD which is really not free, and Windows only, however one of my colleagues has tested it with Parallels and it works well under that - there is a Student discount available. Re: Safari 4
Hi Ruben, Firstly it is FAST ... really fast on an Intel MacBook Pro! Safari 4.0 has almost 50 security fixes, both in the browser and WebKit. Lots of potential security holes plugged. One major change to the interface from the beta involves tabs. In the beta, Apple experimented with a Chrome-style tabs-on-top that it has abandoned in the public release. The font for the tabs was often hard to read, and made Safari look excessively like Chrome. The new tab style now looks much like the old tab style. Cover Flow is now available as a graphic way to browse your bookmarks and history, however, if you've got a somewhat older computer you still won't be able to use any of these graphics improvements. Another new change in the public release is that browser crashes caused by plug-ins like Flash are now sandboxed. If Flash or Shockwave crash, only that plug-in will be affected. The page that it's on will continue to function, and you can reactivate the plug-in by reloading the page. Safari 4 is also the first non-beta browser to fully complete the Acid3 Web standards compliance test. http://acid3.acidtests.org/ The URL bar does feature smart surfing, but only for including your history and bookmarks--much like Internet Explorer. Chrome and Firefox remain the only browsers to default to Google's feeling lucky style of searching from the location bar. There are system files in the OS X System folders changed by the Safari 4 install (that's why there is a restart of the computer). Apple's big claim with Safari is that it's the fastest browser on the market, and from latest results around the Internet ... Apple just might be correct. 150 features http://www.apple.com/safari/features.html I should perhaps mention that latest version of Safari 4 is different in some respects than Safari 4 Beta. There is no uninstaller. The only way you can revert back to Safari 4 beta version either using a Time Machine backup, or recent backup, or reinstalling the OS using an Archive Install. But I don't think you will want to after using the new release of Safari 4. I have not experienced any problems since installing Safari 4. If your computer is up to date and you are not experiencing any problems, everything is in good working order, you should be right. The other thing to check is, if you use any add on plugins in Safari make sure you have the latest updates of them and that they are compatible with Safari 4. The problems people have had seem to be related to incompatible plugins / add ons. Cheers, Ronni On 09/06/2009, at 4:05 PM, Dark1 wrote: Is there any advantage in upgrading to 4.0 from the 4.0 beta? Thank you for all the useful advice so far. Plenty of Mac CAD options. What drove this question was that we can take advantage of the ATO's 50 percent Education Tax Refund if we make a parental decision on a new computer before the end of the month. Re: CAD progs at TAFE?
Hi Paul and all, I tend to agree with Susan. My nephew studied Architecture at UWA and used AutoCad on his iMac under Windows for the last 3 years or so of his degree. That may not be the ideal solution for Mac users, but I understand that most draftmen (draftpeople??) use Windows and almost all use AutoCad. There could be software that will export their files in the AutoCad format, but unfortunately I do not have any experience in this domain. All the very best to your daughter. Re: CAD progs at TAFE?
Morning, Unfortunately Windows using AutoCad is the weapon of choice. There are many programs that can open Autocad files and a lot within OS X, depends on what one is trying to achieve. But, all Intel based Macs can run Windows comfortably with AutoCad. Students can download a free usable version once registered at AutoCad website. Yes there is also Cad programs for Mac, most will allow editing of AutoCad files, but depends on versions It will take some research and testing to implement a workable scenario. Personally I would go down the AutoCad Windows within OS X it is relatively free, see what the leader does then go shopping. Cheers! RobD... I would run plastic fibre between the two sites with ethernet transceivers at each end. This gives you the most reliable, and fastest connection. Wireless is doable, but once you get decent gear the cost will probably be more than fibre anyway. IF it is the second , try clicking on Data at the top in the left panel , and then drag that track on to the window. The size of the file will now be shown on the top line of the window. If you show me yours I'll show you mine :-) Hi Peter, Well, yours certainly does look like mine ;-) I have heard of this happening in earlier version of Safari. A similar screen shot to yours here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=522085 You don't have any plugins that might be interfering? Do you have plenty of RAM? Could it be your Network, have you tried on another Network? I have read this regarding Safari 4: • If your computer has less than 1GB of RAM, Safari fails to cache items larger than 104,857 bytes. * If your computer has more than 1GB of RAM, Safari fails to cache items larger than 209,715 bytes. * JPEGs, at least, are temporarily cached in RAM. Whew. But upon browser restart, you’ll see they didn’t make it to the disk cache, so you have to get them again. * Other objects, like SWFs or videos, though, don’t even make it to the RAM cache, let alone disk. Load the same SWF back-to-back, and you’ve just transferred the bytes twice. Ugh. Netgear make a few devices like that http://www.netgear.com.au/au/Home-Networking/Powerline-and-Coax/Powerline-E thernet-A Basically you plug one end into the wall near one computer (and or modem/router) and connect an Ethernet cable to it. The other one you then place near the other computer and run an Ethernet cable to it. The Ethernet signal then travels through the power and to both computers. I had a quick look on the site and I couldn't see a distance limit, so not sure if it has one. Also to bear in mind, is that some of these aren't as fast as others, so if you need lots of speed/transfer to check each one. Prices range from about $200-$300 depending on models, but if you were interested I've got a couple of traded in sets which are brand new never used to move,... Worth a look anyway. May or may not be suitable for what you're trying to achieve. Hope that helps. hi Daniel powerline networkwatch out..if its not on the same fuse/line it may not work at all i suggest fibre or wireless, to use cat5(lan) cable you have to use line drivers which use a higher voltage to get the data through optical fibre is lightning strike proof. Re: networking
Hi James Yep, it does have it's downsides, but just thought I'd add it as another alternative. Again, it depends on where it's all going, the surrounding, what it's going to be used for, interference from other things, conditions etc etc. Lots to consider and lots of options. Ah, lightning strike proof,..that's what good surgeboards are for. And of course everyone runs their Mac gear on a surgeboard don't they :o) But yeh, lots of options to consider and weigh up. Thanks! H ! A big broad statement ! If you added ... almostI would totally agree . The thing about optical fibre is that it will not pick up and carry a ground power surge , so unless there is a direct strike on it's physical location or in close proximity , or on a metal material running immediately adjacent to it lightning will not affect it .
