Re: CD/DVD Cover design software?

2009-07-14 Thread Kaimaha Keremeta

Thank you to all who replied to my query :)

Discus seems like a very good and popular product.

But I think I'll go with either Disc Cover by Belight, or DiscLabel
due to their integration with Aperture. Thanks for informing me of the
problems you had Martin with alignment, something to be wary of in the
future. Severin, I believe that Discus now has the facility to print
directly onto discs.

any paper makers format that you can think of!. I think it will
print direct to discs but I have not ventured into this!

I have used a few different packages over the years including the

to be one of the most Mac-like friendly and powerful. It also
features integration with Aperture as well as iPhoto and embedded
integration with BeLight's Art Text product which are very handy
features for power mac users.

http://www.belightsoft.com/products/disccover/overview.php

One problem I had with the old version (v1.5.1) was getting it to
line up with the discs consistently (our Epson has a DVD printing
attachment for printing directly onto discs).

It was also a bit of trial and error getting the right colour
settings for printing directly onto printable CDs and DVDs - It
often turned out that the plain paper setting gave the best
colours, while the "CD-R" setting ended up very pale. However,
this was an issue for both the Epson software as well as Disc Cover
and I think is more an issue with the type of printable discs we
were using.

I haven't yet used version 2 of Disc Cover which I believe fixes
the disc alignment issue. (v2 was actually released a year and a
half ago and is now up to v2.3.1, so I am a bit behind the times!)

I haven't used Discus - it looks a bit too much like an MS Paint
port from Windows 95 and the templates look a bit too "Microsoft
Clipart-like" for my taste, but it sounds pretty popular! (Disc
Cover is Mac OS X - only and requires 10.4 or 10.5)

Have any of you Discus users found any problems with it like disc
alignment or have most of you just been printing on disc labels?

I haven't used DiscLabel which Peter recommended, but that package
looks pretty good too. :-)

Has anyone bought this product?

free telstra wifi, was "RE: more iphone questions"

2009-07-14 Thread Hugh Griffiths

I have tried to do a bit more research about this free Telstra wifi question
for iphone, and I have been given several answers, none of which quite make
sense, and none of which I can test or validate as I don't yet have an iphone.

1/. Telstra iphone support says that the iphone downloads a "different" set of
apps and Os when you connect to itunes, and one of these "bits" actually knows
that you are on a Telstra sim and have an iphone therefore you get
authenticated logon to Telstra wireless points.

2/. Telstra sales man says that you need to have an actual iphone plan from
Telstra as this triggers the authentication

3/. Whirlpool forums indicate that with the older iphone 3G the wifi spots were
only free when the bill was generated, ie you associated with a Telstra wifi
spot, accepting the charges, but at the end of the session the charge was
zero'd.

Does anyone have any experience of any of these? It occurs to me that if 3 is
the case, then you really have no choice but to buy an iphone through Telstra
if the free wifi is a big selling point, but if one or 2 is the case then it
may be possible just to have an applstore iphone, a Telstra nextg/3g sim and
the connection settings to make it work?

Hi, I currently have a Telstra sim and number, I am quite happy with my plan (
partly because work pays for it, and partly because of the domestic and
international coverage from Telstra). I would like to buy an iphone from the
apple store but have one burning question

1/. If I use a Telstra sim and an iphone, will I still get access to Telstra
wifi spots for free

Does anyone know the answer to this?

Hi Chris,

The screenshot showing "Current Battery Capacity" - Current Battery
Capacity: 1900 mAH

Original Battery Capacity: 5600 mAH
Which is 33% of original capacity ... I think - Apple spec is 80%

Yeah, I think you need a new battery.

Hi Chris,

If your still under warranty or applecare then you can bring it in to
us or any apple service centre and get the battery tested (you can get
it done outside of warranty to just parts are not free).
If it fails or there is another problem apple will replace it if your
covered. If not the cost of a new one is around 200 but i'd get it
tested first before you go buying anything new

Re: digest mode

2009-07-14 Thread Michael Hawkins

Hi Bill,

Annoying as it is to get a flood of email rather than a digest, I'm finding
I spend less time on the items. Instead of ploughing through the digest with
all its quoting and requoting and what have you to get to the one item I
want to read, I delete vast numbers by looking at the titles and doing an en
masse delete.

Much, much faster than having to scroll down.

Cheers,

Michael.

Re: Macbook battery

2009-07-14 Thread Martin Hill
My old MacBook Pro (Jan 07 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo) needed a new battery
badly about 6-9 months ago.

In the last 2-3 months even with the new battery fully charged, it
started shutting down randomly and then about a month later the fans
started going to full speed only seconds after waking from sleep and
would stay at warp 9 no matter what.

At this point I found time to take it in to Stuart at TeamDigital on
Lord Street who replacing the temperature sensor on the main heat sink
under warranty (good old Apple University Consortium 3yr extended
warranty).

This fixed the fan issue and I haven't had a spontaneous shutdown
since getting it back about a week ago.

However, I have found that sometimes it refuses to wake from sleep -
the sleep light stays on solidly (not pulsing) and the machine refuses
to wake. This is with the battery fully charged and not in deep sleep
mode, so it is obviously not yet perfect, but definitely usable until
I get to end of lease in 6 months and get a new unibody MBP. :-)

mains. It may have anything from 50 to 90% battery life in the menu
bar! When I restart, there is still juice registering. Would this be
another problem?

I have run the battery down to near zero a few times but it seems
not to have made a difference

Any advice is very welcome

Hi Bill

As per Matt's email below, digest isn't available at the moment due to list
issue and the list having to be moved.
It was either, get the list working again without full function,..or no
WAMUG list at all. He went with the first option. :o)

Hope that helps.

Hello Chris,

What is showing in System Profiler > Power - Battery Information under
"Charge Information"?

Charge remaining (mAh):
Full charge capacity (mAh):
Health Information:
Cycle count:
Condition:

This will indicate to us if you need a new battery or not.

You could try an SMC reset followed by a battery calibration, and see
if that helps. But, let us know the details of your battery so we can
give an answer.

Also, and hopefully i am lucky, they will throw in the remaining

no cartridge 5, but 2 8 black ones).

will look at the cost of the inks for original and compatible ones...

It would seem that the IP4300, like the Canon i5600, has separate
ink tanks without the inbuilt print heads which makes refilling, or
inks from Hong Kong a nice cheap option.

I have purchased HK inks and they work very well.

For what it's worth I do both for my boot drive. TimeMachine on one
drive running all the time and a clone on another drive made using
SuperDuper on about a monthly basis. Movie files live on two separate
discs and are backed up independently on an as needs basis using
Folders Synchroniser to yet another disc. All the external discs are
Firewire and all those discs make me a valued customer of Greg Satti
at Zytech. I admit to backup paranoia, the product of an experience
back in my Physics at UWA days when I had three drives on two
computers fail in one week - but that was in the olden days when
things were significantly less reliable.

Second hand printers are very cheap .. go to a Ross Auctiion .

Generally speaking new printers are sold for not more than the cost
of the ink to refuel them .

If you go to

and search for your printer Canon IP4300 you will find reviews .

A quick check did not produce a new price and I only saw one second
hand at $30 .

Unless you know it has not had much work , and know how much ink is left
it' is not worth much and it is your choice whether to or not to buy

Hi David,

Boot from your install DVD and see if a repair via Disk Utility will
help - sounds like a kernel panic.

You may need to backup your data and try a complete reinstall - if the
problem reoccurs, you may have a hardware fault.

If your Mac is overheating and your fans are turning on a lot, I'd
take it to an Apple repairer - I've had a couple of fans go funny,
turning on full/intermittently - they've been replaced and run quiet as.
