They are in Oxford Close, Leederville and the guy to talk to is Lee.

If it's your Desktop Wallpaper try deleting this file: /users/username/

Re: iPhone 3GS - experiment continues, at a cost!

2009-07-22 Thread Eugene

Hi Mike,

the GPS doesn't need a mobile phone signal to work. It only needs 3
GPS satellites overhead. The software you are using may need to
download maps to use with the GPS points.

I did some bush walking and investigated the area whilst at home
connected to my WiFi. When I got to my bush walking destination the
area which was out of mobile range was still accessible because the
most recent maps were cached by the phone. I was then able to plot my
progress on the map with the GPS.

If you are in the middle of the Nullabor and have map software loaded
into your phone you can happily use the GPS.

BTW I have been very happy with the new Turn by Turn GPS software
released by Sygic.

  Eugene

Hi Mike,

As Susan has mentioned, the iPhone uses a priority system:

wifi > 3G > GPRS (or Edge for Telstra)

If you have wifi and 3G turned on, it will try to connect to wifi
first. Failing that, it will default to the 3G network. If that's
turned off, it will just use GPRS.

One thing to remember is that when you have your iPhone in sleep
mode,

it will turn the wifi radio off to preserve battery life, so if you
have anything set to connect to the net automatically, such as mail
set to push or fetch, it will do so using cellular data even with
wifi

turned on.

If you don't want this to happen, just remember to set mail to
manual,

push notifications off, etc. Basically, anything that would connect
automatically.

Unless it's charging at the time, in which case the wifi remains
active.

---
Also Mike, you can see if you are connected to wifi or 3G by what is
showing on the top left of your iPhone screen.
If you see a 3G you are connected to 3G.

If you see this symbol then you are on wifi

Yesterday I got curious (and a little nervous) about the costs I

Re: iPhone 3GS - experiment continues, at a cost!

2009-07-22 Thread Ronda Brown

One thing to remember is that when you have your iPhone in sleep mode,
it will turn the wifi radio off to preserve battery life, so if you
have anything set to connect to the net automatically, such as mail
set to push or fetch, it will do so using cellular data even with wifi
turned on.

If you don't want this to happen, just remember to set mail to manual,
push notifications off, etc. Basically, anything that would connect
automatically.

Unless it's charging at the time, in which case the wifi remains active.
---
Also Mike, you can see if you are connected to wifi or 3G by what is
showing on the top left of your iPhone screen.

If you see a 3G you are connected to 3G.

If you see this symbol then you are on wifi

The iphone goes for wifi whenever it possibly can - its the first
choice. So, if you are at home and it is choosing the 3g network
first, that does seem odd.

Resetting the APN each time you go out would be a pain!

I've just checked my data usage. Using email and light web browsing,

does seem that the 200mb of data is going to more than cover my needs.

Re: iPhone 3GS - experiment continues, at a cost!

2009-07-22 Thread Gordon Campbell

If you go to http://www.unlockit.co.nz/unlockit/ on your iPhone you
can customise some of your settings, including the APN that is used to
access the data network. You can just enter garbage into the APN field
and get the settings. Then your iPhone will be set to a data access
point that doesn't exist, effectively breaking your ability to get
data over the mobile network. This would make sure you didn't access
data accidentally.
