Re: copy slide shows to DVD or USB
Hi Peta, You have everything on you Mac to create great DVDs of your slideshows. You don't need any other software. You don't need Toast to create DVDs, iDVD is a better application for creating DVDs (in my opinion) than Toast. Toast 10 Titanium the Pro version(which I have), does have better menus than previous versions of Toast, but nowhere near as good as iDVD Menus. iDVD is very Mac User Friendly Have a look at the Tutorials at the links I sent below, and do some reading about iDVD. http://www.apple.com/support/ilife/ I use Toast for burning files to disc, converting formats, copying discs, creating disc images, creating DVD of TV shows recorded in EyeTV web videos. It's a very useful application, but you don't require it to achieve what you are wanting to. To find out what Toast 10 can do go to the links below: http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/pro/overview.html Toast 10 Titanium Pro versionhttp://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/titanium/overview.html Toast 10 Titanium version. You have iPhoto 8.0.4. which is part of iLife'09 as is iMovie 8.0.4. iWeb 3.0.1. Open iPhoto and under iPhoto (in Menu bar) click Check For Updates ... current version of iPhoto'09 is version 8.1. There are programs which I have which I have never somehow found/ made the time to look at yet. I definitely do not have Toast. iLlife'09 does not show in my list in Finder. I do have iDVD 7.0.4 - not in my dock but I know it is there; and iMovie 8.0.4; Final Cut Express 4.0.1; my iPhoto is Version 8.0.4; (also Adobe Help Center and Photoshop Elements 4.0;) - all basically not looked at by me yet! Also I have iWork '08. QuickTime Player 7.6.2. Probably other Applications etc. which I have not used, and maybe some of which need updates! My Mac is : Mac OS X Version 10.5.8. I carry out my Updates when the Mac asks me to. There is not going to be any quick short-cut for me regarding copying my slide shows! Do you recommend Toast as being more user friendly than iDVD? (I am very friendly although obviously alarmingly not at all knowledgeable)! Unfortunately I will be tied up for a few more weeks with other stuff, but I will definitely be appealing for help again as soon as I can get back to this. Thank you so much Ronni - I'll be back. Peta On 19/08/2009, at 9:47 PM, Ronda Brown wrote: Hi Peta, You asked how to create a DVD of your iPhoto Slideshows, so they can be played on a standard DVD Player connected to a TV. You need to understand Video Formats. http://gizmodo.com/5093670/giz-explains-every-video-format-you-need-to-know To achieve what you want, you need to use an Authoring Software (such as iDVD or Toast) which will create a DVD by adding a Menu (all DVD's must have a Menu), and convert the Video to MPEG-2 format (DVDs use MPEG-2 video format). iMovie is Editing software iPhoto is a photo manager that offers light yet powerful photo-editing tools software, iDVD is Authoring software. You need to let people know what versions of iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD you are using as different versions do things slightly differently. So for us to give you help we need this information. If you are using iLife'09 - iDVD version 7.0.4 you need to set the preferences in iDVD to Projects: PAL, Encoding - Professional Quality Turn on Show TV Safe Area from View Menu, so you can see exactly what will show on TV you can place your Titles to fit inside the TV safe area. A good place to start is Apple Support pages. http://www.apple.com/ilife/idvd/ Video Tutorials http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/#idvd When you get the project in iDVD as you want it and it previews satisfactorily, a good idea is to use the File-Save as Disk Image menu option. Then open the disk image on the desktop and launch DVD Player to play the project. If the disk image plays OK with DVD Player then the encoding was good and you can burn the disk image to disk using Disk Utility or Toast. This will save you from making bad discs or coasters as they are called. Always use good quality DVD-R Media Discs. I find Verbatim Inkjet Printable DVD-R (SL) DVD+R (DL) most compatible with DVD Players and I burn at 4x 2x This should at least get you started on your way to producing some great DVDs. Epson Perfection Scanner 1670
Good afternoon all I have just discovered from Epson Support that the reason why my scanner now goes through all the motions and noises of scanning a document, but produces only a blank sheet, is because of incompatibility with recent versions of Mac OSX. Apparently I have to work via Image Capture. Opening Image Capture doesn't do much and clicking on the scanner ikon just produces another blank page. Pogue's Missing Manual doesn't help. Where can I find instructions on how to scan documents with my 1670 or do I need a replacement scanner? Your help would be much appreciated. Re: Epson Perfection Scanner 1670
Hi Ian One thing also to note which happens with some scanners and software, is that when the TWAIN (scanner driver) is in use with one Application the other Application doesn't always get control of it. For example, if you've just tried to use it with Epson Scan and found it didn't work then opened Image Capture straight away it generally won't always work. If you restart the computer and open Image Capture first (and not open Epson Scan), and then see if it works from there. That way, if it doesn't work with the Epson software, then you've got a fall back at least. I'd be surprised if it doesn't work full stop though, as I've got clients who have similar models. Hope that helps. Re: Epson Perfection Scanner 1670
Hi Ian I'd be hesitant to suggest taking it to a repairer without giving them a call first. Most places would charge you before looking at it, as they have a standard quoting fee these days, and some of them can be at least $75-$100 just to look at it. If you then consider that you can get a new scanner for around $150, it's sometimes not worth it. Not saying that's always the case, just something to consider. ServiceWest are a repairer for anything Epson, so may pay to give them a call tomorrow and see what they say - 9474 4990. Hope that helps a bit. Thank you for all that info Ronni, Just after I posted this email, I decided that the best option was probably to install again and look for an uninstall option. I did this and so far no problem. Re: Epson Perfection Scanner 1670
Hi Ian Just to add to this for your interest. I was out doing another job for a client today, which got fixed very quickly, so they asked me to look at their scanner which had stopped working. Lo and behold, it was an Epson Perfection 1670. Running a new iMac with 10.5.6. Would come up with a message that it cannot recognise the document after the preview scan and just show the preview as white with nothing on it. Trashed the preferences, restarted. Updated to 10.5.8. Repaired permissions. Uninstalled and reinstalled from a downloaded driver. Removed and checked TWAIN drivers. Checked Image capture. Still the same, no joy. So it's not a hardware fault with your scanner, so you can rule out taking it to get looked at ;o) (And thanks for the heads up on ServiceWest, hadn't realised that.) A lot of googling didn't really turn up anything useful at all. Unfortunately the client had to go out so we ran out of time to keep looking at it. I just had an idea driving back, which you may want to try. From the downloaded update, uninstall the drivers. (When you open up the update it will be set to custom install, but if you click that (in the top left hand corner) you can choose Uninstall. So ran that and uninstall their drivers. The restart and just try scanning without installing anything. (I'm just wondering if there is a default TWAIN driver installed which is conflicting with the Epson one.) If doesn't work at all, I'd then try installing it straight from the CD that came with the Scanner, rather then the update. Just to see if it makes a difference. See how you go with that. Will be interested to hear back. Just thought I'd let you know. Hi Bob Ok, sorry should have worded it as... So it's *probably* not a hardware fault with your scanner. Just seems to much of a coincidence that two people with exactly the same model of scanner, on the same OS having the scanner which was working before just stop at the same time. Another thought is where are you downloading the drivers from? I had a problem with a HP scanner recently and so downloaded the latest drivers from hp.com.au and it still did not work. I found a much later version on the hp.com USA site that solved the problem. Re: Epson Perfection Scanner 1670
YES but if it's a 10.5.x issue then you'd think in theory it should do the same thing. To double check it you'd need to run it on two different other machines, one running 10.5.x and one running say 10.4.x. If it doesn't work on all of them, then you'd assume it should be the hardware. If it doesn't work on both 10.5.x machines but does work on 10.4.x machines you'd assume it's the software. That would be the true test as I see it. So it's *probably* not a hardware fault with your scanner. Just seems to much of a coincidence that two people with exactly the same model of scanner, on the same OS having the scanner which was working before just stop at the same time. YES !But that said there has been a lot of work done with the software by some knowledgeable types without success . The test at Kevin's tomorrow should narrow the field . With hardware it's not unusual for a particular model to experience similar faults located in similar locations on moving parts ... this could be one of them . Cheers Bob But hey,..it could be a hardware fault too, in which case, weird,...that it happens all at the same time. ;) By all means I'm happy to be proven wrong, I was just offering extra info to let Ian know that I had someone with the exact same problem, doing exactly the same thing, under the same OS when it was working before something changed. So it's not a hardware fault with your scanner, What makes you so sure of that ... ? what if the sensor has say a broken wire and simply cannot send the signal or sends only a very low level signal to the software ? Bob so you can rule out taking it to get looked at ;o) (And thanks for the heads up on ServiceWest, hadn't realised that.) A lot of googling didn't really turn up anything useful at all.
