Hi Peta,

You have everything on you Mac to create great DVDs of your
slideshows. You don't need any other software.

You don't need Toast to create DVDs, iDVD is a better application for
creating DVDs (in my opinion) than Toast. Toast 10 Titanium the Pro
version(which I have), does have better menus than previous versions
of Toast, but nowhere near as good as iDVD Menus.
iDVD is very Mac User Friendly Have a look at the Tutorials at the
links I sent below, and do some reading about iDVD.

I use Toast for burning files to disc, converting formats, copying
discs, creating disc images, creating DVD of TV shows recorded in
EyeTV web videos.
It's a very useful application, but you don't require it to achieve
what you are wanting to. To find out what Toast 10 can do go to the

You have iPhoto 8.0.4. which is part of iLife'09 as is iMovie 8.0.4.
iWeb 3.0.1.
Open iPhoto and under iPhoto (in Menu bar) click Check For
Updates ... current version of iPhoto'09 is version 8.1.

I need to carefully check what exactly I do have on my Mac.

There are programs which I have which I have never somehow found/
made the time to look at yet. I definitely do not have Toast.
iLlife'09 does not show in my list in Finder.

I do have iDVD 7.0.4 - not in my dock but I know it is there; and
iMovie 8.0.4; Final Cut Express 4.0.1; my iPhoto is Version 8.0.4;
(also Adobe Help Center and Photoshop Elements 4.0;) - all basically
not looked at by me yet!

Also I have iWork '08. QuickTime Player 7.6.2. Probably other
Applications etc. which I have not used, and maybe some of which
need updates!

My Mac is : Mac OS X Version 10.5.8. I carry out my Updates when
the Mac asks me to.

There is not going to be any quick short-cut for me regarding
copying my slide shows!

Do you recommend Toast as being more user friendly than iDVD? (I am
very friendly although obviously alarmingly not at all knowledgeable)!

Unfortunately I will be tied up for a few more weeks with other
stuff, but I will definitely be appealing for help again as soon
as I can get back to this.

When you get the project in iDVD as you want it and it previews
satisfactorily, a good idea is to use the File-Save as Disk Image
menu option.
Then open the disk image on the desktop and launch DVD Player to
play the project.
If the disk image plays OK with DVD Player then the encoding was
good and you can burn the disk image to disk using Disk Utility or
Toast.
This will save you from making bad discs or coasters as they are
called.

Always use good quality DVD-R Media Discs. I find Verbatim Inkjet
Printable DVD-R (SL) DVD+R (DL) most compatible with DVD Players
and I burn at 4x 2x

This should at least get you started on your way to producing some
great DVDs.

Epson Perfection Scanner 1670

Good afternoon all

I have just discovered from Epson Support that the reason why my  
scanner now goes through all the motions and noises of scanning a  
document, but produces only a blank sheet, is because of  
incompatibility with recent versions of Mac OSX. Apparently I have to  
work via Image Capture.


Opening Image Capture doesn't do much and clicking on the scanner ikon  
just produces another blank page. Pogue's Missing Manual doesn't help.


Where can I find instructions on how to scan documents with my 1670 or  
do I need a replacement scanner? Your help would be much appreciated.
