New G5 Logic Board

2010-01-12 Thread Antony N. Lord

Hi there!

Our old faithful Dual 2.0 GHz PPC G5 is doing the "3 flash" boot. Even
though this is supposed to indicate bad RAM (tested with other RAM with
same result) I know this is likely to be a logic board. I'm sure I'll
dig up a service manual somewhere and explore further.

Anyone know what a board / replacement is worth from a local service
agent?

I'm no stranger to replacing logic boards so am considering the eBay
option.

Sure - I'd love to pour the money in to a new machine but that's going
to be the best part of $5k we don't jhave right now ;)

Cheers, Antony.

Re: Entourage

2010-01-12 Thread choy

HI peter,

As an ex-PDA consultant/retailer I've had all sorts of combinations of
sync between Palm, Windows Mobile, Blackberry and iPhone and entourage.

I must say that I found the windows mobile (the OS your HTC Touch Pro
2 runs) the most cranky, with quite a few episodes of failure to
connect and wipes. This is with different windows mobile devices and
pcs as well as macs. There is alot of documentation out there about
how finicky ActiveSync can be (just google it!), so I'm glad your
combination at work is working for you.

Apple have a built in syncing facility called sync services which
enables syncing between different macs and mobile devices, so syncing
entourage is definitely possible. This is probably easiest with an
iPhone, but can also be done on your touch, a blackberry or even a
palm device. There is also a commercially available program called the
missing sync which enables syncing for many different brands of
smartphone (including the HTC touch pro)

Basic instructions on how to sync contacts and calendars in entourage
with an iphone are here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1670

Email sync depends on what kind of email account you have - the best
way is via the use of an IMAP email account like gmail. There are
plenty of ways to get email on your smartphone, for this you need to
elaborate more on what sort of email accounts you want to sync (?your
work account? if so is this a Microsoft Exchange email account - you
may need to talk to your IT guy at work to check this. ?a personal
email account - if so is it a gmail account? Hotmail? your ISP email
account, which one?)

As for SMS - the built in Address book program on your mac will allow
you to SMS by typing on your macbook keyboard so long as your phone
is connected to your macbook via bluetooth. However, if you need to do
this maybe you need a new phone with a touchscreen/keyboard and your
contacts synced with your phone because I generally find it faster to
do it on the phone!

I have a Macbook at home running Entourage as my email client and
wonder if there is an Apple equivalent software to enable local
synchronisation with an iPhone or PDA equivalent and perhaps even
include SMS capability from the Macbook keyboard?

Anyone out there have this setup themselves?

Google Earth Snow Leopard

2010-01-12 Thread Michael Hawkins

Since installing Snow Leopard, when I attempt to use Google Earth, all I get
is a murky screen splattered with camera icons.

I have removed Google Earth and downloaded it afresh via the Apple website
down load page.

The About data for Google Earth lists it as version 5.1.3533.1731 Build
Date Nov 11 2009 OS 10.6.2.

OS is 10.6.2

17 MacBook Pro
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

Is it just a matter of patience needed on my part for a cache to fill?
Personally, I'd have thought that an hour was more than long enough to look
at an address in Perth!

Hi Peter,

You have the new iTB Time Capsule which is a Dual Band (5GHz/2.4GHz),
so your MacBook should be connecting to the faster n band.

You probably setup yas Automatic Radio Mode.

To verify if your MacBook is connecting to the faster n band:

Hold down the option key on your keyboard while you click the fan
shaped Airport icon at the top of your screen.

Look for Transmit Rate.

A value of 54 indicates that the network is operating at g level
speeds. 70-80 and up indicates that you are at faster n speeds.

My MacBook Pro Transmit Rate is always around 270.

Hi Peter,

Without knowing how you setup your Time Capsule Wireless Network originally.
I'm assuming you followed the Instructions that came with Time Capsule to setup
a Dual Band Network with WPA2 encryption.

To change the Wireless Mode:
1. Open Airport Utility
2. Double click your Time Capsule Network (in Left Column)
3. Then click the Wireless button
4. Have Allow this network to be extended ticked
5. Radio Mode: what do you have selected? ... is it Automatic?
Radio Mode: You can change it to 802.11n only (5 GHZ - 802.11b/g/n ...
you might have to hold Option click to display this.
6. Radio Channel Selection: Automatic

Click Update, and wait until your Time Capsule restarts and appears in Airport
Utility.

Then check if your MacBook is connecting to the 802.11n ... Hold down the
option key on your keyboard while you click the fan shaped Airport icon at
the top of your screen. It should now be PHY Mode: 802.11n

Hi Peter,

You have the new iTB Time Capsule which is a Dual Band (5GHz/
2.4GHz), so your MacBook should be connecting to the faster n
band.

You probably setup yas Automatic Radio Mode.

To verify if your MacBook is connecting to the faster n band:
Hold down the option key on your keyboard while you click the
fan shaped Airport icon at the top of your screen.

Look for Transmit Rate.
A value of 54 indicates that the network is operating at g
level speeds. 70-80 and up indicates that you are at faster n
speeds.

My MacBook Pro Transmit Rate is always around 270.

Hi Peter,

Without knowing how you setup your Time Capsule Wireless Network
originally.

I'm assuming you followed the Instructions that came with Time Capsule
to setup a Dual Band Network with WPA2 encryption.

To change the Wireless Mode:

1. Open Airport Utility

2. Double click your Time Capsule Network (in Left Column)

3. Then click the Wireless button

4. Have Allow this network to be extended ticked

5. Radio Mode: what do you have selected? ... is it Automatic?

Radio Mode: You can change it to 802.11n only (5 GHZ - 802.11b/g/n
... you might have to hold Option click to display this.

6. Radio Channel Selection: Automatic

Click Update, and wait until your Time Capsule restarts and appears in
Airport Utility.

Then check if your MacBook is connecting to the 802.11n ... Hold down
the option key on your keyboard while you click the fan shaped Airport
icon at the top of your screen. It should now be PHY Mode: 802.11n

HI peter,

As an ex-PDA consultant/retailer I've had all sorts of combinations of
sync between Palm, Windows Mobile, Blackberry and iPhone and entourage.

I must say that I found the windows mobile (the OS your HTC Touch Pro 2
runs) the most cranky, with quite a few episodes of failure to connect
and wipes. This is with different windows mobile devices and pcs as well
as macs. There is alot of documentation out there about how finicky
ActiveSync can be (just google it!), so I'm glad your combination at
work is working for you.

Apple have a built in syncing facility called sync services which
enables syncing between different macs and mobile devices, so syncing
entourage is definitely possible. This is probably easiest with an
iPhone, but can also be done on your touch, a blackberry or even a palm
device. There is also a commercially available program called the
missing sync which enables syncing for many different brands of
smartphone (including the HTC touch pro)

Basic instructions on how to sync contacts and calendars in entourage
with an iphone are here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1670

Email sync depends on what kind of email account you have - the best way
is via the use of an IMAP email account like gmail. There are plenty of
ways to get email on your smartphone, for this you need to elaborate
more on what sort of email accounts you want to sync (?your work
account? if so is this a Microsoft Exchange email account - you may need
to talk to your IT guy at work to check this. ?a personal email account
- if so is it a gmail account? Hotmail? your ISP email account, which
one?)

As for SMS - the built in Address book program on your mac will allow
you to SMS by typing on your macbook keyboard so long as your phone is
connected to your macbook via bluetooth. However, if you need to do this
maybe you need a new phone with a touchscreen/keyboard and your contacts
synced with your phone because I generally find it faster to do it on
the phone!

I have a Macbook at home running Entourage as my email client and wonder
if there is an Apple equivalent software to enable local synchronisation
with an iPhone or PDA equivalent and perhaps even include SMS capability
from the Macbook keyboard?

Anyone out there have this setup themselves?

Bluetooth Magic Mouse

2010-01-12 Thread Wendy S. Austin

Greetings Peter

Not sure if your problems are the same as mine -

I am having problems with Magic Mouse whereby it stopped doing all the extra
things like scrolling and became just an 'ordinary mouse'. Also looking at
the System Preferences Mouse, I no longer got the video showing how to use the
Magic Mouse, instead it just showed ordinary mouse setups. After three
lengthy phone calls with Apple Support, the third person I spoke with suggested
deleting the bluetooth plist in MacIntosh HD LibraryPreferences and
restarting computer. The Magic Mouse then works properly however, this
annoying fix needs to be done every time I shut down and restart the computer.
I am about to speak with Apple again to see if there is a proper, permanent
fix for it.
