Re: Discovering IP Address for an HP Laserjet printer

2010-02-02 Thread Mike Moore

Peter I tried what you suggested and it does ping successfully.

What is really weird about all of this is when I first connected the printer I
was able to see the printer fine. The first page I sent to print was an image
and 80% of the way through the printer spat the dummy and aborted with a
postscript error. Ever since then I have been unable to get the printer to
work. Each time I try to print it reverts to the pause state.

I've tried the following:
- Turning it off and then back on again.
- A cold reset,
- Connecting it direct to the computer and nothing changes.
- Removing the printer and then adding it back in again.

It has me stumped.

Re: Continuous Ink Supply Systems (CISS)

2010-02-02 Thread Mike Fuller

I wasn't at the meeting yesterday but the mention of the CISS from
RIHAC prompted me to mention my experiences.

I have had a CISS from RIHAC for my Epson Photo R230 for over a year
now and it has served me wonderfully. The quality of the ink is on a
par with the Epson inks but the main benefit is the financial saving.
From factoring the ink as the major cost in a print run I now don't
consider it at all.

The service I've had from RIHAC is the best I've ever experienced
from any computer-related company. With any technical issues they
have replied promptly, personally and in detail (reminds me a bit of
Ronni in their approach).

I will be buying a CISS for my Epson Photo R2400 soon and save a heap
more. Considering a set of 8 Epson Cartridges is about $170, and the
RIHAC CISS filled with ink is $140 plus postage, it wasn't a hard
decision.

I have no affiliation with RIHAC, apart from being a very satisfied
customer.

Cheers

Use Network Utility or Terminal to "ping" the printer's IP address (in Terminal
just type 'ping ' followed by the ip address. Don't leave out the space after
"ping". In Network Utility just go to the Ping tab and type in the IP address).

If you computer can see the printer on the network you should see a repeating
response similar to

64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=1.069 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=1.069 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=1.069 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=1.069 ms

(substituting the printer's IP address, of course).

If you don't see this, you have a networking problem, not necessarily a printer
problem.

It really makes no difference to the user experience whether Mail, Calendar and
Contacts are all in the one entity or three separate applications. The Mail
experience certainly proves this with its use the Data Detector. Mail interacts
with Address Book directly, and Data Detectors allow you to add dates and
events directly to your iCal calendars, and even interact with Google Maps. It
all happens seamlessly.

What does matter is that Address Book and iCal data are system-wide, and
therefore available to other software if the author chooses (Bento being one
obvious example). This is difficult if not impossible with closed systems like
Entourage. You'll have to duplicate your contacts in Address Book anyway to get
access to this system-wide functionality. Microsoft software still retains it's
own little ecosystem within Mac OS X (even down to the clipboard), and does not
really sit well with modern Mac software.

In the case of the first option, you tell Windows that you are installing a
directly-connected printer, and then you specify either the printer model you
actually have or Parallels' special Laserwriter emulator (which used to be the
old SoftWindows approach). The documentation sternly warns you against using
any form of Windows Driver installation.

This method does allow you to share the printer between Mac and Windows, but
you don't necessarily have access to all the features you might have in the Mac
setup, and as you say, it can problematic.

Given that the running of Windows on a Mac is simply a means to an end anyway,
most people probably run their Windows solution, do what they have to do, then
quit their VM instead of leaving it running, so sharing is not generally a
problem anyway.

Re: Discovering IP Address for an HP Laserjet printer

2010-02-02 Thread Rob Findlay

You don't need to if you already found the IP address via bonjour browser. It's
simply another way to find out information you already have.
Assuming that you have now configured the printer as an IP printer your problem
is now probably that you either have the wrong driver or that the driver is
incompatible with Snow leopard. You could try changing it to a generic
postscript driver and see if that works or look for an updated driver from HP.

Ripple - an interesting idea

2010-02-02 Thread Neil Houghton

Hi all,

I hope you will forgive me a slightly off-topic post, but I thought fellow
WAMUG list readers might find this use of internet advertising interesting,
I certainly did.

Ripple came up with the idea of using internet
advertising as a means of easily raising money for charity.

They say that ALL the money they generate goes to the charities concerned -
they do not (at present) deduct any overheads or charges.

They explain just how it works here

Personally, I don't really use a home page but I do use Google quite a lot
so I've just used the Ripple searchbar feature

To add ripple to Firefox as my default search engine (it is just added as an
additional search engine to the others I have installed) and now everytime I
do a google search (as a ripple search) a small advertiser payment goes to
charity.

Anyway, I thought it was a great idea and some worthwhile causes - so I hope
you will not consider this post spam as I genuinely felt that many of you
would find it interesting (and computer related).

Cheers

Re: Printer Error

2010-02-02 Thread Neil Houghton

Hi Maureen,

The fact that it started working again and then stopped again tends to
suggest an intermittent hardware fault to me.

The first possible culprits to pop into my head are:

1) Faulty USB cable
2) Faulty USB port on the printer
3) Other fault with the printer
4) Faulty USB port on the computer

1) is easily checked by trying a different USB cable

Swapping the cable to a different USB port, as you have already done, would
tend to rule out 4) (unless both ports have problems)

If you open the System Profile application while the printer is connected,
look under "hardware" and select "USB" you can see all the USB devices
connected to your computer. If you cannot see the connected printer and you
have checked that the computer USB post and the USB cable are OK, then it
would point to a fault in the printer.

Try that first and see how you go.

Cheers

Re: Entourage bug

2010-02-02 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi Ronni,

No, I exclude Entourage from my Time Machine back-ups and rely on my
SuperDuper clone as my back-up. I accept the risk of losing the emails
between my SuperDuper clones. I do however close ALL open applications
before cloning.

Whilst I haven¹t regularly checked the entourage database on the clone, when
I recently migrated my main user account over to my new iMac, I migrated
from its clone rather than from the original computer and the transferred
microsoft user identity worked just fine on the new machine.

It also seems to me that there would be a similar risk in relying on Time
machine to back-up a Windows VM while the machine was running not that I
have seen any specific reports relating to this it just doesn¹t seem
³right² to back up a running VM! - So I also exclude my Parallels VMs from
the time machine back-ups and use a 2-pronged strategy in that I rely on a
VM clone to protect me if I ³stuff-up² the VM and my SuperDuper clone
provides a back-up of both the VM and its clone.

At this stage, I haven¹t looked at Windows ³snapshots² to provide different
roll-back points (is anyone else using this on VMs?)

Hehe, yes it would be nice if MS (and Parallels) started utilising sparse
bundles to enable something like this but I¹m not holding my breath!

Hi Mike,

If you log-in to your router configuration using your web-browser can't you
see a list of the IP addresses allocated to connected devices?

I'm going on old memories here - so its just a guess ;)

Printer Error

2010-02-02 Thread Maureen

Hi
At school I have a canon pixma printer connected to my MacbookPro, 10.5.8,
2.16GHz via USB

This printer has run beautifully until just recently.
Now I keep getting this message:

Error Number : 300 The printer does not respond. Make sure that the printer
is plugged in, powered-on, and properly connected to your computer.

Which it all is and I have even swapped the cable to the other USB port.
Turned the printer on and off a few times and turned it on and off at the
wall. Then all of a sudden today it worked for about 20 minutes and then
stopped and gave me the same message again. I've removed the printer from
the list and added it again.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Take Care

Maureen

Re: Discovering IP Address for an HP Laserjet printer

2010-02-02 Thread Rob Findlay

If it's running bonjour you can use the little freeware util, "Bonjour Browser
to" find it.
Else if it has an IP lease from the router you can log in to the router and
look at DHCP clients or attached devices. If you only have a few devices it
should be pretty easy to spot.

Discovering IP Address for an HP Laserjet printer

2010-02-02 Thread Mike Moore

I have an HP 8550N Laserjet printer with Jetdirect card connected to my
computers via the router.

With Snow Leopard I can't connect to the printer. I have tried printing out
the configuration page to get its IP address (as suggested in the HP help
forums) but it doesn't show on that.

I'd be most grateful if someone can point me in the right direction as to what
to do.

The Great Firewall...

2010-02-02 Thread Matthew Healey

Hi Everyone,

iiNet are currently supporting a web site which allows you to send your
thoughts to the senator responsible for implementing the Great Firewall of
Australia. I found it when browsing the iiNet customer portal.

To make it short, the filter is nothing but a waste of time and money for
anyone not on the receiving end of a lucrative government contract. It will
probably end up being used to block politically sensitive and embarrassing
content. As a perfect example, compare these two identical search results.

Google Australia

Google China

I would urge you all, as part of the larger Australian internet community to
oppose it.

Re: Mail 'To' line anomaly

2010-02-02 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Jennifer,

Delete that "rogue" address in Address Book.
The wrong TO: Address could only be coming from either your previous
recipients list or Address Book.

Those are the only two places it could generate from on a Mac.

If then the problem is solved, you should post a new thread to WAMUG
Regarding you MacBook running slow & experiencing the spinning beach
ball, including details of your MB & RAM & how much free space you
have on the internal drive.

Cheers

PS. My MacBook Pro is back with new Logic Board. I've had to use the
iPhone to send this reply as the MBP is doing a bootable clone backup.
Then Time Machine backup of my user folder ...You can never be too

That's a relief. No, I haven't been aware of other problems and I

Is he running OS X 10.5.8 or 10.6.2?

When you have time, run "Repair Permissions" again on your 10.5.8 &
see what the result is please.

iinet have been blacklisted on a service called Barracuda, which is

My supplier clicks on a link in the bounceback message they get
that allows them to be white listed and this works for a while and
then we go through the whole process again. I can't understand how
iinet, a relatively large ISP, can get blacklisted and allow

Apparently your emails are getting blocked by this protection
