if you have swollen caps you can expect other caps are faulty too
is the rectifier still ok?, to high ac on the dc rail causes this
swelling (internal heatup)

&if you buy the mentioned 14c el-cheapo type you can expect the
same problem again in a year
a lot of the elcap are rated for 2000h @ 85 (or 105) degrees &

[FOR SALE] Brand new HP Photosmart B109a (Printer/Scanner/Copier)

2010-04-26 Thread Neil Houghton

Hi All,

I have a brand new unopened HP Photosmart B109a colour printer for sale
which also scans, copies and works with Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5 & 10.6.

More info here:
http://store.apple.com/au/product/TX973X/A?fnode=MTY1NDA1MQ&mco=MTU0Njg2NzU

I am in Albany, in case anyone down here is interested, but I am heading up
to Perth tomorrow and will be in Perth over Thursday 29th to Sat 1 May - I
will bring the printer up with me - so if anyone is interested we could
arrange collection/delivery.

Since it is unused/unopened, I'm thinking $100 sounds reasonable (I think
this is what Chris S offered the same printer for, back in December) -
however, I could be open to reasonable offers, in this ballpark.

Cheers,

Neil

All in one printer suggestions?

2010-04-26 Thread Andrew Schox

Dear all,

My father is looking to purchase an all in one printer. He doesn't need high
output in terms of pages per minute, but would like to print some good quality
photos.

He uses an 1.25GHz eMac with 512MB RAM, running OS 10.5.8.

Any suggestions from satisfied users out there?

Cheers,

Andrew

Re: Freeze just after starting ??

2010-04-26 Thread Tim Law

Try starting in safe boot by holding the shift key on startup

If it starts properly then, then you will feel relieved but the
problem will not be resolved.

Try running disk warrior to fix any disk directory probs that may
affect the startup.

I have just been through this and found my logic board capacitors
faulty. It would start in safe boot because of, I think, the lower
load on the systems this makes and pushing the power supplies, which
involve the capacitors, a lot less.

However yours could be a failing disk or software related. As I said
booting into safe mode gives a sense of relief, not a solution

You can also try turning off all startup items in Accounts user
preferences too whilst in safe boot

Sounds like it has left this if you did.

You need it out of your Login Items if you are no longing using

In System Prefs > Accounts > Your Account > Login Items.

Control Click on Antispam Engine to "Reveal In Finder" (to show

You can then trash it from there, & restart your Mac.

Re: Freeze just after starting ??

2010-04-26 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Stephen,

Ok, something is preventing a complete startup / login. In System Preferences >
Accounts > Login Items, do you have any non-apple 'helpers' or apps opening
automatically when you log in … hidden (tick in box) or showing (no tick in
box)?

Try starting up in Safe Boot/ Safe Mode/ Safe Login:

1. Be sure the computer is shut down.
2. Press the power button.
3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key.
Tip: The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone
but not before.
4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator
(looks like a spinning gear).

You will see "Safe Boot" on the login window.
5. Then login and wait till everything is loaded, then select restart from
Apple (at top left corner) drop-down menu.

Safe Boot occurs when the system is starting up; Safe Mode is when the system
is actually running; and Safe Login is when the system starts up the user
session.
During Safe Boot, the system will more carefully test startup procedures and
limit automatically launched processes during each stage.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: USB Broadband Prepaid Modems Speeds

2010-04-26 Thread Stephen Chape
I looked at Vivid Wireless recently and their website displays a coverage map
based on your location.
My area in Jane Brook did not look good !!
Also I could not find any reference to speed on their website.

Since we moved from Woodbridge to Jane Brook last October, our speed has
dropped considerably.
We went from ADSL2+ to standard ADSL because Jane Brook is apparently on a
sub-exchange of Midland that does not cater for ADSL2+.

At least that is what Westnet told me.
And because of that I have not looked at any other landline options.
Besides which I really do not want to lose the service I enjoy.

Very annoying when watching a video stream break ... break ... break ...
break
Also when downloading updates, etc ... waiting ... waiting.
I reckon I drink more coffee than I used to, so it's also bad for my health !!!

Make sure you are running the very latest version of Genie, but it's very difficult to know what other processes are going on following your data migration. It's possible that your Genie installation contains some old legacy resources which might be causing extra problems. Genie have the following to say on their website:MacOSX Snow Leopard - Should I upgrade?Apple's new OS, Snow Leopard was released on Friday 28th August 2009.4th Dimension, the publishers of the database in which Genie is written, have not certified this version of 4D to run on Snow Leopard. This means that if a problem arose with the current or future versions of Snow Leopard, that 4D will not fix it. Having said that, hundreds of our users have already upgraded to Snow Leopard without encountering any significant problems. There are currently only two known problems.1. The Open Document dialog window is causing memory corruption which usually results in the application quitting after an Open Dialog has been displayed several times. This appears to be a bug in Apple's operating system, which affects all programs. We expect Apple will fix it in an upgrade.2. 1-bit black and white TIFF images can't be viewed. This problem can be resolved with a program called GraphicConverter (http://www.lemkesoft.com/) to view the images (and resave them in a readable format if desired).I would suggest that all you can do is to alert the Genie publishers to the problem and see if they can resolve it for you.

Well I guess there's only really one maximum size of anything, but when it
comes to Finder Windows, each one has it's own size, depending on what size it
was when you closed it. This information is save in an invisible file called
.DS_Store, a copy of which is found in almost ever folder on your Mac. Try
opening a Finder Window, then change its dimensions, then close it. Immediately
reopen it, and it should appear in precisely the same location and at the same
size that it was when you closed it. Each folder has its own .DS_Store file, so
you can have different windows all opening at different sizes and locations.

If this is failing for some reason, then perhaps something has damaged the
.DS_Store file in the folder you are opening. You can delete the .DS_File from
the folder which is troubling you using Terminal by navigating to the problem
folder and typing "rm .DS_Store". The windows should then begin to behave
properly.

Noe of this has anything to do with the fact that you are using a 21.5" Intel
iMac.

VividWireless claim much higher speeds if close to one of their
towers. Hard to find a tower location map anywhere. Tandy at
Phoenix Shopping Centre tell me that they have had reports that as
there is a tower in Coolbellup, our location in Bibra Lake has been

It seems that there is a lot of hearsay about speeds and we need to

I set up an elderly lady with an Optus pre-paid wireless modem.

$199 includes the modem and a 12 month contract @ 1gb a month. If
she exceeds the limit it is charged at 7c per mb.

At the conclusion of the contract the bills are $15 per month.
Seems to be working OK and Optus support has been good, albeit from
the Phillipines.

Vivid Wireless is looking very good for us as we cannot get better
than 420bps on Twin Pair Gain phone lines. If we could get BB2+ our
iinet a/c offers lots of free zones.

there be any reason why I would change and go elsewhere for such a

OK and it *sounds* too good to be true. The one thing they do NOT
talk about is download/upload speeds. Presently I can get 10 -15Mbps,

USB Broadband Prepaid Modems

2010-04-26 Thread Rob Findlay

It's been my experience that the reality doesn't match what they claim are
supported platforms.
I want to give my niece an old G4 PPC Powerbook running Leopard and one of
these devices she can top up with credit at her leisure. Anyone know which
brand works with this config from experience?

Effect of OS 10.6.3

2010-04-26 Thread Michael Hawkins

I had been using MacSpeech Dictate v1.5.8 using a usb microphone for a few
months before I installed Mac OS 10.6.3 combo update, and had been using a
Bluetooth Apple keyboard for a few weeks.

MacSpeech and the key board seem to be error-ridden since I installed OS
10.6.3.

MacSpeech is less accurate.

There seems to be a delay from time to time with the Apple wireless key
board, letters appear out of order in words and incongruous letters appear.
Spaces aren't where they should be - it's as if there is a delayed reaction
to input at times..

I've removed and reinstalled MacSpeech and removed MacSpeech preferences and
when I installed the combo update I did all the usual things such as quit
all applications, repaired permissions, restarted the computer before
installing, restarted the computer after installing. The forum for number of
MacSpeech users has a number of postings from users who have had trouble
having their micro-phones recognised or detected since installing OS 10.6.3.
Could it be that the usb ports are less sensitive, perhaps, or have others
been left with the impression that 10.6.3 has fractured (if not busted) a
few things?

Michael Hawkins

Spinning coloured beach ball

2010-04-26 Thread Stuart Breden

I've just got a 21.5" Intel iMac and had the data from the old G5
transferred.

Since then with several programmes especially Genie Solutions , the coloured spinning ball holds up the programme/s.

I've run Dick Utilities from the start up DVD and also run DiskWarrior
but it still does it.

Can anyone help?

Children computer programmes/magazines

Was talking to a father of a 3 year old.

Are there any magazines that specialise in children's programmes?
Are there must have programmes that all children should have?

Finder dimentions

2010-04-26 Thread Stuart Breden

Is there only one maximum size you can have the Finder with the 21.5
Intel iMac?

I've just got a new one and every time I resize the Finder it goes
back to a smaller size when I restart the iMac.
