Alex Trouble is business is starting to look more and more like politics every day (and by politics I mean theatrical dramatics) Given that all the main players are sounding like this (and for all the Android open platform talk most of the companies selling them try lock you in to their skin) its a case of either picking the lesser of the evils, the devil you know or just ignoring them and getting what you need to get the job done. To me I guess so long as they don't lock you in to the app store with Mac OSX they can gesticulate in the press as much as they want. So long as the Apple computer platform continues to allow you to load what you want when you want from where you want then I'm not going to sweat on it too much -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au
Re: I am a little concerned about recent news
Alex, I wouldn't rely on The Register for any serious objective analysis. They feed on sensationalist headlines and sarcastic take-downs. As they admit at the end of their article, Steve did say that the Mac App Store won't be the only place [to buy Mac apps], but we think it'll be the best place. I was somewhat worried about Apple's decision to stop bundling Java initially, but I think it isn't as bad as we might suspect and in actual fact may actually result in more quality software being available for Mac OS X and a far more healthy Mac platform into the future. It is pretty evident that iOS has now become so important to 3rd party software houses that the absence of Flash and Java has actually precipitated a landslide of native iOS apps and compatible web apps replacing those older legacy platforms. For example over 54% of all video on the web is now available in HTML 5 format and playable on iOS compared to only 21% back in April. Likewise, all the big software houses from Salesforce, to Oracle to all the games publishers who matter have jumped on the iOS bandwagon with gusto and swelled the iOS App count past 300,000. Who needs Flash games when you could have a far nicer native iOS app version? With Apple recently becoming the 4th largest PC manufacturer in the USA with 10.4% marketshare and 20.7% of the consumer market (and the largest computer manufacturer in total when you include the iPad in their sales - after all, PC Tablets are included in Dell and HP's figures), The Mac is now a very sizeable market opportunity for 3rd parties. With the enormous boost to Mac OS X app sales expected with the upcoming Mac App Store, 3rd parties would be extremely foolish to ignore the option of producing native Mac OS X apps. AutoCAD is not the only program to have been ported to the Mac recently. In James Gosling's reply to Apple's deprecation of Java on Mac OS X, he did actually admit that Sun/Oracle already makes Java for the largest platform - namely Windows, so it is entirely fair for Apple to now insist on this as well. It should mean Java on the Mac stays up to date with the latest releases far better than it has in the past if Oracle is serious about keeping Java alive. (Oracle's suit against Android's Java implementation not withstanding!) However, it also provides impetus for 3rd party developers to actually write native Mac versions of their software (instead of ugly, kludgy, slow Java versions) or go completely cross-platform HTML5 if they are going to give the best experience on the Mac OS X platform. Likewise with Flash, instead of Apple being lamb-basted for security holes in the version of Flash bundled with OS X, it will be Adobe who will rightly wear 100% of the blame instead. As such, with the Mac being a $20 billion dollar business to Apple all by itself, I wouldn't be too worried that Apple is going to stifle Mac OS X in preference to iOS. Rather, I see the benefits in market share, business and consumer acceptance all working together for the betterment of good old Mac OS X. My 2c anyway. :-) -Mart Martin Hill mailto:mart_h...@mac.com homepages: http://web.mac.com/mart_hill Mb: 0401-103-194 hm: (08)9314-5242 On 01/11/2010, at 2:48 PM, Alexander Hartner wrote: Reading the recent news items I am getting a little concerned about the direction this is heading in. Hi Sam, Yeah, if it's a good idea somebody has usually done it. And if they haven'tmake sure you do and get a patent on it :-) We've put these in for schools where they have an overhead projector or interactive whiteboard a distance away from where the computer will be. It allows you to put a USB extender/booster behind the wall or in the ceiling to get over 5m, without having cable looped across the floor, behind the desk, over the lever arch folders and under the lamp. :-) Keep sharing! Western Digital External Hard Drive
Hi, I have a Western Digital 1.5TB External Hard Drive that I am using for storing video footage on. I have noticed an annoying icon that keeps appearing on my desktop each time I mount the HD, apart from the HD icon that is, and it is a WD SmartWare icon in the shape of a disk, that I can't dismount/eject while I am using the HD. I can eject the HD and the WD SmartWare icon remains. What makes it even more strange is that if I click on the HD to show what is on the HD in find the WD SmartWare does not appear. I don't want to click it in case I launch what ever it is, just want to find out what it is and get rid of it. Any ideas? Thanks Matt Falvey Hi Matt, The 'WD SmartWare VCD' disc icon always appears on the Desktop. The older ones you could erase the SmartWare. You have two choices … Just ignore the Virtual CD icon each time it appears when the drive is connected, OR you can do what I do when I setup these Drives for Clients. The WD SmartWare' (on these new Drives) is installed in the Firmware of the Drive, and impossible to erase, you can get it to 'Hide' (but it is still taking up space on the drive 237.5MB). I have managed to disable it, I'm not sure if the Terminal Command I ran first or the instructions below did the job. The Terminal Command I ran was: sudo sh -c echo UUID=`diskutil info /Volumes/WD\ SmartWare/ | grep 'UUID' | awk '{print $NF}'` none hfs rw,noauto 0 0 /etc/fstab Now thinking back I think it might have worked, as it did unmount the 'WD Smartware CD partition' ... I was expecting it to delete the space it takes up, but on re-reading the command is says unmount … so perhaps I didn't need to do all the following 'stuff' ;-( To Disable the 'WD SmartWare VCD' from showing on the desktop every time the WD Drive is connected you have to download. 1. A Firmware Update for the Drive. 2. Then download Install a VCD Manager for Mac. (so it's damn well installed on my Mac) 3. Then Update the Drive Firmware (make sure it's the last updated 5/20/10) 4. Then Run the Virtual CD Manager.app , click configure the Drive, disable the VCD. Now at least the 'WD SmartWare Disc' doesn't appear on the desktop when the WD Drive is connected. Re: Beating my dad to the link
G'day all. I've had a look at both sites and it appears to me that there is a fundamental difference between the two types of wall sockets. Sam's socket, according to the website http://store.fastmac.com/product_info.php?products_id=458 is just a power socket. In other words, you can plug the usb device in to charge up only. The socket simply replaces a current power socket. I see that it is due out in December this year, pending final safety approval. At least in America anyway. Ronni's socket looks like a dedicated socket like a TV socket. You plug your device in one end and the display, or whatever, is at the other end. So Sam - it does appear to be new and cool! I wonder how long they'll take to get out here to Australia?
