Re: IceTV app - recommended? - and Elgato EyeTV Hy brid/i7 iMac problems
Hi, Neil Finally, I shut down the computer, plugged the EyeTV in and THEN restarted – this time the EyeTV shows up on a USB high speed bus and so EyeTV works fine – I change channels and even unplug and re-plug the EyeTV (with EyeTV running) and there is no problem. As I mentioned earlier in several members on this list at as well not all USB ports on modern Macs are created equal. This is the exact same problem my dad has with his Elgato EyeTV Hybrid (Previous Generation) and exactly what you have mentioned above is how we fix the problem unfortunately I have not been able to find another solution. I have speculated Most of these problems most likely could be solved it by using a USB powered hub or maybe one of these http://dl.dropbox.com/u/229190/Screen.Shots/USB-Power.jpg -- Regards Kyle - Kyle Kreusch: - This E-Mail Was Dictated Using MacSpeech Dictate, [i] - Check Out My New Website For Articles And Other Great information. Re: strange phone call
That's ok John, I have all my email Accounts setup as IMAP on the iPad, so they have these extra mailboxes, a POP account probably does not. On my Mac one is a POP3 Account the others are IMAP, but IMAP is better than POP on the iPad, because IMAP is more conducive to checking your email from multiple devices on the iPad so all are setup as IMAP on iPad. In Advanced View under Deleted Messages I take it from what you mentioned below, that you have this set to Never (to keep deleted messages indefinitely). The other options are 'After One Day, After One Week, or After One Month'. With any setting other than 'Never', Mail removes messages from your designated Trash mailbox after they’ve been there for the period of time you request. Do you have the same setting ( Remove copy from Server after retrieving a message-Never) in this Mail Account Advanced on your Mac? If you do, have Remove copy from Server after retrieving a message set to never meaning all the emails are remaining on the server, you might be getting to your ISP's limit for your email account. I have Remove copy from server after retrieving a message set to After one day on my Mac on my iPad. I don't know how you are syncing your Mail Account, I surmise using iTunes. Keep in mind that this copies only the settings, not any messages already downloaded to your computer; your device must download messages directly from your mail server. This sync is not only one-way; it’s also one-time. That means even if you leave the box checked and sync repeatedly, iTunes won’t overwrite the settings on your iPad every time, so if you happen to change the account settings on your iPad, you need not worry that syncing again will cause problems. On the other hand, this also means that if you make changes on your Mac and want to overwrite the settings on your iPad, it won’t happen automatically, even if all the boxes remain checked. You must first delete the account in question from your iPad and then, with that account selected in iTunes and Sync Selected Mail Accounts enabled, sync again. Re: IceTV app - recommended? - and Elgato EyeTV Hy brid/i7 iMac problems
Hi Kyle, Yes, I can understand that not all USB ports on modern Macs are created equal System profiler on my 27² iMac only shows two USB High-Speed Busses each with one hub and so each of these hubs already has internal Mac hardware hanging off it The IR Receiver and Built-in iSight on one hub and the Internal Memory Card Reader and BRCM2046 Hub (with the Bluetooth Controller hanging off it) on the other hub. The situation with the MacBook Pro I find much more confusing: * There are only two external USB ports but sometimes these ports show up on a USB bus (USB1) and sometimes they show up on a USB high speed bus (USB2) * These external ports can switch busses independently of each other. * The EyeTV is obviously a USB2 device and needs to be connected to a USB high speed bus (USB2) * A given port can be showing as on a USB high speed bus (USB2) with a USB flash drive mounted but then, when I eject the drive and plug the EyeTV unit in, the port is switched to a USB bus (USB1) - and so the EyeTV software tells me to connect it to a USB2 port! * The problem is convincing the MacBook Pro to connect the port to a a USB high speed bus (USB2) and not to a USB bus (USB1) * Once the EyeTV is connected to a port AND the MacBook Pro has the port connected to a a USB high speed bus (USB2) everything works OK. * This situation is the same for either/both of the two external USB ports. I may well get a powered USB hub (although the iMac now seems to be working OK) - but if I¹m travelling light with the laptop I probably wouldn¹t want the extra weight (not so much the hub as the powerpack) whereas the actual EyeTV hybrid is small light enough to throw in the bag. Anyway, it¹s all part of the fun of learning how it all works ;o) Cheers Neil -- Neil R. Roni, Thanks for email. I didn't have the problem before upgrading iOS4. At present its intermittent. My email is deleted from the ISP server if I download to my Mac. With the Kindle app you can read them on as many devices as you want. Its set up within your account on the website. I have my Tutorials, eBooks, Take Control eBooks all on my iPad as well as my MBP. 1. Add the file (or files) to your iTunes library on your computer using one of the following methods: • In iTunes, choose File Add to Library and open the file. • Drag the file from the Finder (Mac) The book appears in the Books category in iTunes, and it can be copied to the iPad the next time you sync. 2. With your iPad selected in the iTunes sidebar, click the Books tab. Make sure Sync Books in enabled at the top of the tab, and then in the Books pane below, mark the checkboxes for items you want to transfer. After syncing, when you open the iBooks app, the book appears in your library. If it is a PDF, tap the PDF button at the top of the iBooks screen to view it. For music it's actually FIVE computers and unlimited iPods/iPhones/ iPads. If you use iBooks on the iPad, you have to buy from the iPad... there is no mac client for the iBookstore :( But you can load PDF ebooks from your Mac into iBooks... you do this via iTunes. But if you use Stanza, you can get books in non-DRM format, download them to your mac and then use the Mac version of Stanza to transfer them to your iPad... I do this regularly. Stanza is a free app for iPads/iPhones and the Mac (and PC) any help on ebooks function would be greatly appreciated. many thanks regards lynn -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au -- Nicholas Pyers (nicho...@nicholaspyers.com) Heaven on Earth? Re: ebooks (between macbook and ipad)
I agree with Susan, Kindle is a great App. The free Kindle app offers a cleaner interface than iBooks, employing a page curl effect when turning pages to keep that sense of reading a physical book (the page curl can be turned off if you prefer), but otherwise using the full screen space for the page you’re reading. Your account at Amazon.com tracks the Kindle titles that you’ve purchased. If you log in to your account and visit the Manage Your Kindle page, you can connect your account to a variety of devices. (iPhones, iPod touch, iPad, and the Kindle for Mac desktop application, meaning you can load ebooks purchased from your account on any of these various devices.) What’s more, if you purchase a book on one device, it’s automatically added to the others when they sync with Amazon’s servers; with iBooks, by comparison, you need to re-download a title on a different device (for free, thankfully), or make a point of synchronizing it through iTunes. I have Stanza App on my MBP iPad. Stanza goes out of its way to improve the reading experience, with controls for adjusting margins, line spacing, paragraph spacing, alignment (not just choosing between full or left justified), and even different hyphenation systems. (There are also several themes you can apply to the interface, which, as is so often the case with custom themes, can make readability nearly impossible.) Stanza also ties into several online publishing outlets within the app, giving you many more options for finding new titles. I also have the GoodReader for iPad app, which, among other things, works well as a PDF reader. How can you see the range of books they are offering. Do you have to pay before you see? If so, don't pay!
