Blitto's Conference Blog update

2011-03-06 Thread rb...@iinet.net.au

 Sorry
I may have renamed the Blog which may change the URL

http://web.me.com/blitto/Rods_BECB_Blog/BECBlog/BECBlog.html

I have 4 pages up now and am still adding.
It's primarily Education focussed rather than Technology but stuff WAMUGers may be interested in includes:

ipad2
printing is becoming obsolete
apple has 40% of music sales with itunes store and claims a second revolution is about to happen - The Publishing Industry will soon be revolutionised by the iBooks store
The ipad took only 9 months to reach 15 million users!
•    Ipad is not technology its about Content.
•    The teacher need NOT be the smartest person in the class
•    ePub – the open eBook standard
•    We should be teaching kids to write aps

cheers

Re: New MacBook Pro: Should I order 2.2 or 2.3 GHz i7?

2011-03-06 Thread Robin Belford

If you're going to use Aperture perhaps you should reconsider not going for the
fast processor and the extra cache?

Re: New MacBook Pro: Should I order 2.2 or 2.3 GHz i7?

2011-03-06 Thread Stuart Evans

Yes, it makes you wonder why Apple have bothered continuing with the box
products. They still sell them on the Apple store. I think the long term aim
is clear. From a resellers perspective it's another erosion of revenue, but
we all have to adapt. It's all going to be only online someday. What will
never be online is the personal touch, personal training, personal advice
and personal support. That's where our focus is.
I just wonder why the App Store prices aren't at parity with the US store
(or close to it). Given there are no imports, no boxes, no deliveries etc,
only GST to add - I'd expect the prices to be closer. Unless I'm missing
some software tax that the government applies?

Flame on Johnny! ;-)

Cheers,
Stuart

Re: New MacBook Pro: Should I order 2.2 or 2.3 GHz i7?

2011-03-06 Thread Daniel Kerr

Hi Reg

As much as I hate to not give sales to stores, if you are looking at
Aperture it's actually cheaper to download it from the MacStore if you're
not worried about not getting a disk and little manual.
It's $249 in the shops, $229 on the education store and $99.99 to download
it from the MacStore.

I'm not even going to get started on why they make it so cheap, as I don't
want to start a flame war.

But just thought I'd point it out.

Kind Regards
Daniel

Re: Another MYOB question

Hi John

is the "5" in MYOB 5 correct? That is an extremely old version.
Windows MYOB is running on v19.5 now. What would you be running on
the Mac? The data files are cross-platform compatible but you need to
have matching versions of the programmes. It is do-able one way or the
other!

Hi Ronni

Thanks for your reply. I did have a couple Smart Mailboxes but it
seemed to me that the emails in those boxes still remained in the

Have you looked at creating a Smart Mailbox?
1. Choose Mailbox > New Smart Mailbox, or click the Add (+) button

If necessary, click the Add (+) button to add more search criteria.

I have a few Smart Mailboxes. One for “Unread Messages”, one for

Re: New MacBook Pro: Should I order 2.2 or 2.3 GHz i7?

2011-03-06 Thread Ronda Brown
I agree with Ruben. To advise whether the 2.3GHz is worth the extra price would
depend on what you use the MBP for.
If you are heavy user in Photoshop and Final Cut Pro, I would suggest the
2.3GHz.

The 2.3GHz CPU has a larger L3 cache (8MB vs 6MB.) The increase in cache is
usually more important than the minimal increase in speed, depending on what
you do in Photoshop & FCP.

Certainly go the biggest Hard Drive you can afford and extra RAM.

Re: The Glossy vs Anti-Glare … this debate has been going on for eternity ;-)
Some Professional Graphic Artists & Photographers say the Anti-Glare gives a
truer ‘Print’ colour than the Gloss.

The latest MBPs have high resolution displays, older MBPs you could get a lower
resolution Anti-Glare display.

I’ve had anti-glare on my PowerBook & previous MacBook Pro, but I decided to
go with the Glossy Display on my current MBP.
I love the look of the glossy screen, the images have a deeper look with more
contrast. blacks are really black.
