Pete,

Other than an off-list suggestion from Robert Howells, your reply is the only
one I received to my query. I had given up on expecting an answer, but you've
now clarified the situation, and I am very grateful.

Re: Good Story

2011-06-01 Thread cm
Hi Nichole,

It is a good story and the computer being a MacBook does make one feel good.
One detail that "Media Watch", the inimitable ABC TV media critique programme,
would no doubt have pointed out, is that even though the site is called "Perth
Now" and even though they fail to mention it explicitly until most of the way
through the piece, the incident happened in Oakland across the bay from San
Francisco. The other piece of information not prominently mentioned is when the
incident occurred in March. Some stories are recycled for up to 20 years.

Thanks for sharing in any case and excuse my Media Watch trained sensibilities.
:-)

Cheers,
Carlo

Re: Search Mailbox Problem

2011-06-01 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Rick,

Normally the things you have tried correct this problem.
You might have some corruption in Spotlight. Are you having any problems
searching for anything on your Mac, or is it only in Mail?

If all else fails, trash your entire Spotlight index and allow Spotlight to
rebuild it from scratch.

In Terminal, type:
sudo mdutil -E /
Press Return and enter your password when prompted.

The rebuilding process goes on in the background, but may take several hours.

When it’s finished, searching should work once again.

Cheers,
Ronni

 Hi Rick,

 Have you tried:

 1. Quit Mail.

 2. Drag this file to the Trash ...

 /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index

When you launch Mail again, it’ll tell you that you need to “reimport” all
 your messages

 3. Let it do so—it’s recreating your envelope index from scratch, but
don’t worry, you won’t lose any data, such as labels or message status.
When it finishes, your mailboxes should behave correctly.

search items in the subject list only. Thanks Rick.

You don't specify the age of the iMacs so it's difficult to comment. The
earliest 21.5 inch iMac listed by MacTracker is the "late 2009" model, which
has the maximum installable RAM at 16Gb. The closest 24 inch in age ("Early
2009") - the last of the 24 inch iMacs - specifies 8 Gb as the maximum
installable. Neither of these models should have any trouble with 2 x 4Gb.

Re: Stolen iphone

2011-06-01 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Alex,

I'm sorry to hear this Alex.

You must file a police report that it is stolen.

I take it you don't have MobileMe with 'find my iPhone' activated on the iPhone?
If you did you could put a message on the screen, or wipe the data.

Sounds like you have contacted your carrier and reported it stolen & they have
blocked the IMEI number which will then make it unusable in Australia.

All networks will have a copy of it.. because the owner would have it
registered against their SIM card.. Each time you log onto the network, make a
call.. even when the phone swaps network towers the IMEI is registered from the
phone to the network and recorded... which is what the network would use to
block it with... and that information is passed onto each of the networks to
add to their Stolen Phone registry to block logging onto the network.

Daily digest - update (& HTML)

2011-06-01 Thread Pete Smith

With reference to the daily digest not being available I have found out the
following:

Our web host "Web In A Box" has physically moved from their old location to a
new location.

The WAMUG mail system is running on Kerio Mail Server. The domain is running
under a virtual server at the new location and the whole shebang comes under
the auspices of our web host. Unfortunately, they don't currently run Kerio as
part of their regular service.

If I understand correctly, whilst the physical move has been completed, the
software migration hasn't happened yet (or at least hasn't been completed).

However, once Web In A Box has Kerio up and running, the digest should come
back online and also the list will revert to plain text again and attachments
will not come through.

Sorry I can't give a time line. I believe they've hit a couple of hurdles along
the way.

Regards,

Pete Smith

Airport express setup

2011-06-01 Thread Peter Crisp
I was asked to help a friend of my wife's to debug a problem he had in getting
his Airport Express (few months old) to work stably with his Macbook Pro (Snow
Leopard) about 1 year old. The network worked fine for his wife's Toshiba
Windows laptop, but he couldn't get to any web site on the MBP - however email
worked.

The Airport is connected to a DLink Modem set to be a DHCP server. It took a
while to troll through the various settings for "Airport" and the Network and
as I am not a wireless network expert by any stretch I was going form memory,
in fact it was by fluke that I have managed to get my own network set up. In
browsing through the settings, which had been set up by the Local Apple dealer
specifically in his own house and following hours on the phone to Apple 'Help'.
I noticed of the two mode settings it was set up in the mode that WASN'T Bridge
Mode (I cant recall the name of it). So we made the change to Bridge Mode and
now it works fine. The Transmit rate is around 70-130 max which seems low as I
get around 240-300 on my Time Capsule. Maybe that is due to being 5 GHz vs 2.4
GHz.

There was however one other facet in the setup I am puzzled by. in the
"Internet" tab, it said "Connect to the Internet using" - "Ethernet" or "PPPoE"
- it was set to "Ethernet". In fact I had noticed this first before the "Bridge
Mode" setting. So which should it be set to?

Regards

Peter...

More questions

2011-06-01 Thread tom samson

I see that our iMacs -we now have one each 2.8 intel 21 and 24 inch can max the
Ram at 6 GB but Apple says 4 GB. If I bought 2 x 4 Gb what happens to the iMac
seeing them and which way round should the Ram go if I have a 4 GB and a 2 GB -
to equal the theoretical maximum?

Re: Eye TV

2011-06-01 Thread Ray Forma

Tom,

All 4 ABC digital program streams are carried as sub-channels on Channel 12
broadcasting from Bickley. Details are:

Perth ABW12 226.5MHzPolarisation: H Omnidirectional 50kWABW2
Mast Television Road BICKLEY

So, if you lose one of the ABC digital channels, you will also have lost the
other three.

Therefore, it seems like you are having antenna or cable problems.

A nearby transmission is Channel 10 digital, which confusingly transmits on
Channel 11. Details are:

Perth NEW11 219.5 Polarisation:H Omnidirectional 50kWNEW 10 Tower
Welshpool Road CARMEL

The NEW11 frequency is close to the ABCs frequency, and the transmitter power
is the same, but the tower is closer to the edge of the Darling range so
several suburbs get better reception from that transmitter. So, if you are
consistently receiving digital channel 11 (which carries sub-channels Channel
10, Channel 11, and OneHD) then a bit of a fiddle with your antenna should get
you Channel 12 and its ABC sub-channels. All it often takes is a heavy bird
slightly bending one of the medium-long elements on your antenna, making it
less sensitive. Channel 12 resonates with the medium-long elements of standard
antennae.

A Quick Time puzzle

2011-06-01 Thread Severin Crisp

I have QT (Pro) 7.6.9 with 10.5.8.
QT has started to misbehave. On Export as QT Movie/ Options/Settings
opens a blank window then finally hangs and has to be Force Quit. All
other functions and exports seem fine. I deleted QT preferences and
cache and repaired permissions and ran Disk Warrior all to no avail.
I then downloaded the QT installer and did an install, having first
deleted QT Player and its preferences with App Cleaner. The install
worked seamlessly, apparently, but no QT appears in my Applications
folder. A repeat install lead to the same result. System Prefs still
shows the QT pane with my Pro reg intact. I have restored the QT
Player from TM Backup and apparently the status quo is restored,
though I still cannot access the Settings window.
I find this seriously mystifying and would appreciate advice and
comments!

Severin Crisp
Anyone suggestion that I replace my trusty, beloved and very reliable
G5 with an iMac and start from scratch might sadly be welcomed!
