Filemaker Go on and iPad

2011-07-30 Thread Chris Burton

Hi WA muggers

I purchased an iPad last year, but havnt used it much since, except for emails.

I am considering using Filemaker Go on it but am not sure how to go about
installing it. I see on the Filemaker website it can be purchased for around
$40.

Do I need to use my iPad to purchase FM Go online so that I can then instal it
directly onto the iPad, or do I use my MacBook Pro and then connect to the iPad
to install? Im assuming there is no physical box with DVD?

Once installed I want to port a database (FMPro 11) I have on my MacBook Pro
over to the iPad and use it as a data entry device (as I previously had used a
Palm with FM Mobile) to record whale sightings. Then I need to backup the Go
database to the laptop at the end of each day.

I have read that the Go version cant be Synced with the main laptop database
(as it could be done with FM Mobile using Bluetooth) but have to copy files
over so they can update the main database?

Can someone please advise if this is do-able and what is the best way to do the
file transfer (it will be on a ship, so there wont be any good link to the
internet). For example could I set the Laptop and iPad up to communicate with
each other over a Lan or wireless network to do file transfers?

Thanks very much for any advice.

Kind regards

Chris

Hi Chris,

For a start, go here and download the FileMaker Go Development Guide PDF

http://www.filemaker.com/support/product/docs/filemaker-go/fmgo_development.pdf

http://www.filemakertrial.com/go/
Access your critical data on the go
FileMaker Go provides access to databases created with FileMaker Pro and hosted
on FileMaker Server or FileMaker Pro - ideal for mobile teams.

FileMaker Go can access databases on a Mac or PC using a local wireless network
or over the Internet via Wi-Fi or 3G. All changes are instantly updated in the
hosted file.*

FileMaker Go users can also copy databases between their desktop or laptop
computers and FileMaker Go via File Sharing in iTunes - perfect for single user

Databases may also be downloaded by email, popular file sharing sites, or the
web.

When the G5 was switched off or shutdown all the slaves went off too and
came back on when the G5 restarted.
The problem is that the G5 is now an iMac and the board does not like it.
When the iMac is running all is fine but when it shuts down the
peripherals shut down then keep trying to restart in an on and off
fashion. From my reading there is a threshold of about 30mA at which shut
down happens and I am wondering if the iMac still draws this in a shutdown
state, though that seems bizarre! I have rechecked the functionality of
the board in a different setup and it is fine.
Any comments or similar tales would be most welcome.

Re: ANZ Login Problem (was More Lion Woes)

2011-07-30 Thread Jane Griffiths

Hi Tom

You are not alone in experiencing the ANZ login problem!

I thought I would try logging into ANZ from my MacBook Air and I had exactly
the same result as you described.

I can still successfully login to ANZ on the iMac using 1Password, but when I
login to ANZ on the MacBook Air, the account window fails to open.

Both are using the same version of Safari.

However, the iMac (ANZ login works) has 1Password version 3.6.1 on it, whereas
the MacBook Air (ANZ login fails) has the later version 3.6.5 of 1Password.

So it seems there may be a bug with the later version of 1Password.

I will report this glitch to the 1Password developers, hopefully they will fix
the problem with an update.

Jane

toolbar containing the 1Password icon by default. You need to right-click or
Command click on the top bar of this window, this will show a contextual
menu showing that Hide Toolbar is ticked. Click on the Hide Toolbar text
and the toolbar will appear with the 1Password 1P' icon showing.

Click on that 1P icon and the new style 1Password vault interface will

 Hope this help.

Re: External startup disk with Lion

2011-07-30 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Lloyd,

1. Open Disk Utility, and click on your USB drive (the manufacturer's info
line, and not the line with the name of the partition), and click on the
Partition tab.
2. Click the Options button at the bottom of that window.
3. Click GUID partition table (needed for booting on an Intel Mac.)
4. Click OK
5. Click on the Volume Scheme, and choose 1 partition from the drop-down list
(or another choice if you think you need more than 1 partition.)
6. Click the Format drop-down, and choose Mac OS Extended (journaled)
7. Name your drive whatever you like, and click the Partition button.

That USB drive should now be selectable if you boot to your installer disk.

In the past, no Mac could boot OS X from a USB drive.
That changed with the Intel Macs, and USB certainly boots an Intel Mac. But,
you must change the type of partition, as listed above, or the installer
ignores the USB drive.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: ANZ Login Problem (was More Lion Woes)

2011-07-30 Thread Jane Griffiths

A few more points on the ANZ login problem.

The developers of 1Password, Agilebits, released another 1Password update
yesterday, version 3.7.0.
I installed this version on MacBook Air but still experienced the failed ANZ
login.
I then removed this version and installed the same version that works correctly
on my iMac, version 3.6.1, but this also failed to work on the MBAir.

However, Firefox worked fine:
I installed Firefox v5.0.1 on the MBAir and reinstalled the latest 3.7.0
version of 1Password.
In Firefox, right click/control click within the ANZ smaller login window, this
brings up a contextual menu.
From the contextual menu choose 1PasswordFill Login*Your own login name for
ANZ*
This opened the ANZ account details window correctly for me.

See screen shot of login in Firefox: http://cl.ly/242Z3r0H3N0O02221O2U

I think it's now time I stopped repeatedly logging in to ANZ for today before
they think I'm some sort of hacker and lock me out of my account!

Cheers.
Jane

Re: Videobox

2011-07-30 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi John,

I have Videobox v3.5 Safari v5.1. With Safari 5, you do have to Drag the URL
drop onto Videobox where it indicates “Drop Video URL here”, it takes a bit
of time to start downloading the video.

This is Videobox weblink and explanation re: Safari 5.1
http://oven.tastyapps.com/

Our other main applications (Videobox, Musicbox and Web Snapper) all should
work on Lion as is.
However, the Safari plugin will not. As a matter of fact, anyone upgrading
Safari to the latest version (5.1), be they on Lion or not, will see our
plugins stop loading in Safari. Again, that is because Apple is tightening-up
the noose again. For years we have asked Apple to give us a true plugin
architecture for Safari.
They finally gave us something a little while back, in the form of Safari
Extensions. However, these are nowhere near as powerful as a compiled plugin
would have been, and so we kept our plugin (also referred to as a “haxie”) for
as long as we could. But, again, Apple did not like this, and is making it
difficult to keep doing that in the latest Safari. So, once more, we just can
not continue this pointless fight. We are moving all our Safari plugins to the
new extensions model, so new versions of these applications will be coming very
shortly.

In the meantime, you can use drag and drop to grab your videos, audio clips and
snap web pages.

Cheers,
Ronni

I have never had any problem with Safari 5 or 5.0.5. Videobox opens

I have Videobox v3.5 Safari v5.1. With Safari 5, you do have to Drag the
URL drop onto Videobox where it indicates “Drop Video URL here”, it takes a
bit of time to start downloading the video.

Extensions. However, these are nowhere near as powerful as a compiled plugin
would have been, and so we kept our plugin (also referred to as a “haxie”)
for as long as we could. But, again, Apple did not like this, and is making
it difficult to keep doing that in the latest Safari. So, once more, we just
can not continue this pointless fight. We are moving all our Safari plugins
to the new extensions model, so new versions of these applications will be
 coming very shortly.

In the meantime, you can use drag and drop to grab your videos, audio clips
 and snap web pages.

 Cheers,
 Ronni

Re: Filemaker Go on and iPad

2011-07-30 Thread Peter Meyer

Hi Chris
It's very easy to transfer the files via the iTunes interface using the USB
sync cable. You simply connect the device, go to the Apps tab, scroll to the
bottom where File Sharing apps are listed and make the transfer(s).
The files listed are of course those on the device (iPad, iPhone) and you have
the option of deleting the existing files if you want to update from the MBP
(select the files and hit the keyboard delete) and then use the Add button
to replace them from the MBP). Alternatively, use the Save To button to
transfer from the device to the MBP and you will be prompted to
overwrite/replace the existing file - this is what you aparently want to do -
the transfer is very quick.

As you have already discovered this is not a sync process so if you have been
updating files on the MBP you will have to transfer the updated file back to
the device before you go off collecting more data - and so on…

 Hi Ronni

Thanks very much for the info and links...during my previous searches, I had
found many others but not this one to the development guide, which is really
 helpful.

I also joined the Filemaker forum and had a couple of useful responses,
saying I could download and install FMGo either way. So looks like I have
 started!!

I just need to make sure I can work out and easily do the file
transfers/updates between iPad and MBPro without having to go through a
Filemaker Server, as internet connection on a ship is only bad at the best of
 times!

 Best regards and many thanks

 Hi Chris,

For a start, go here and download the FileMaker Go Development Guide PDF

 http://www.filemaker.com/support/product/docs/filemaker-go/fmgo_development.pdf

 http://www.filemakertrial.com/go/
Access your critical data on the go
FileMaker Go provides access to databases created with FileMaker Pro and
hosted on FileMaker Server or FileMaker Pro - ideal for mobile teams.

FileMaker Go can access databases on a Mac or PC using a local wireless
network or over the Internet via Wi-Fi or 3G. All changes are instantly
 updated in the hosted file.*

FileMaker Go users can also copy databases between their desktop or laptop
computers and FileMaker Go via File Sharing in iTunes - perfect for single
 user databases.
Databases may also be downloaded by email, popular file sharing sites, or
 the web.

 Hi WA muggers

I purchased an iPad last year, but havnt used it much since, except for
 emails.

I am considering using Filemaker Go on it but am not sure how to go about
installing it. I see on the Filemaker website it can be purchased for
 around $40.

Do I need to use my iPad to purchase FM Go online so that I can then instal
it directly onto the iPad, or do I use my MacBook Pro and then connect to
the iPad to install? Im assuming there is no physical box with DVD?

Once installed I want to port a database (FMPro 11) I have on my MacBook
Pro over to the iPad and use it as a data entry device (as I previously had
used a Palm with FM Mobile) to record whale sightings. Then I need to
backup the Go database to the laptop at the end of each day.

I have read that the Go version cant be Synced with the main laptop
database (as it could be done with FM Mobile using Bluetooth) but have to
copy files over so they can update the main database?

Can someone please advise if this is do-able and what is the best way to do
the file transfer (it will be on a ship, so there wont be any good link to
the internet). For example could I set the Laptop and iPad up to
communicate with each other over a Lan or wireless network to do file
 transfers?

Thanks very much for any advice.

 Kind regards

 Chris
