Re: WordPress

Hi Paul, I started out the same way and then moved onto my own hosted platform.
I use mediatemple but there are plenty of options.

Your own platform gives you the capacity to do more (add your own analytics,
ads, themes etc) - current site www.justindavies.com.au if you are interested
in taking a look...

Best regards

Hi Justin,
I am but a novice & quite illiterate as far computer goes - technically

My blogsite is: http://p21chong.wordpress.com which I started in May 2009. I

An encouraging venture indeed & it's FREE.

Wordpress administration provides whatever help that's required & it's so easy

Re: MacBook battery

2012-04-03 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Severin,

Your MacBook would be around 2007 model?
Three years is a good life for the battery, and 300 cycles is the upper limit
of what Apple suggests a battery should perform really well for your model MB

But it is not showing "Check Battery" yet; so you don't have to replace it
just yet, unless you want longer between charging times.

Cheers,
Ronni

Paying $160 every year for access to Wordpress (I assume on top of regular
hosting charges) is very much over the top.

We have hosting accounts with two different companies in the US, and each of
them costs less than $160 per year total. Wordpress and lots of other support
software are included in this one price. Also included are huge storage and
traffic limits which we have never exceeded. This is despite hosting lots (I
imagine we are up to several thousand by now) of web pages spread over about 25
domains and around 50 email addresses on one of the accounts, with less on the
other. We have never paid anything other than the basic cost for anything on
either account.

So going with the free service offered by Wordpress is a good idea, but if you
outgrow that then shop around for a better deal than iiNet is offering.

email alert

2012-04-03 Thread Merv Bond
I received an email a few days ago telling me I had exceeded my email
quota. It was from an individual not iiNet who is my provider. I deleted
the email.
On the same day I received an offensive email, different sender. I sent
a copy of the email code to iiNet support and yesterday I received a
phone call from what I assume is iiNet's call centre advising me to send
the code to which I did.

Today I received another "exceeded my email quota" from a "Redmond,
George (NIH/NCE) [E]". I didn't note the sender of the previous of email
and I can't remember whether it was Redmond George or not. I haven't
opened this email. Has anyone else had this sort of message?

Java Update for OS X Lion 10.7.3 & OS X 10.6.8

2012-04-03 Thread Ronda Brown
Apple has released Java for OS X Lion 2012-001 and Java for Mac OS X 10.6
Update 7, which addresses a vulnerability in the Java framework that can be
exploited by the Flashback trojan. Ars Technica reported on Monday that
Flashback.K, the latest variant of the trojan, can utilize a Java vulnerability
"to hijack Macs even when users don't enter an administrative password."
According to Apple's security overview for this update, this can occur when
visiting a Web page that is running an untrusted Java applet. (For more about
the Flashback trojan, see "Beware the Morphing Flashback Malware," 27 February
2012.) The update is available for OS X Lion 10.7.3 and Mac OS X 10.6.8, and
you should be able to access it via Software Update. (Free, 66.9 MB and 79.7 MB)

Re: WordPress

2012-04-03 Thread Justin Davies
David, wordpress is terrific.

YOu can get a site hosted by wordpress at wordpress.com or arrange your own on
your own hosting by downloading the software at wordpress.org. There are many
hosting sites.

You can also talk to Glenn Nicholas at OM4 who provides wordpress hosting, a
regular contributor to this forum and that allows you to focus on the content
rather than the technology...

Re: AppleTV Gurus? (SBS On Demand and iView)

2012-04-03 Thread Alan Smith
Hi Adam

I understand that without a Smart TV, repeat TV programs will need to be
downloaded and played through iTunes. I used to used Firefox add-ons
iViewFox and Plus7Fox for this. I am not aware of an SBS utility. I now use
Elgato eyeTV to record the programs to my Mac directly off-air (much better!).
I have an ATV2.

Cheers

Re: iMessage Problem

2012-04-03 Thread David Wood
Thanks Ronni I finally cracked it... and as usual it was because I hadn't
followed instructions to the letter!! I have 3 Airport Expresses. the 2
old ones that I use for speakers and printer which are the old flavour and can
only be tasked on Airport Utility 5.6. The Airport Extreme Base Station and
also the recently purchased Airport express which I use to extend my network
are of course 5ghz for some reason my iPad had decided to "attach" itself
to the old Airport Express? Why? Anyway I went back and reset both of the old
AE's and voila... all good! But it took 3 hours!!

Thanks again as always for your invaluable help.

David

Hi David,

I won’t be back on WAMUG Mailing list tonight, I now have Clients work to
finish.

If your Airport Extreme and Airport Express are both 802.11N you would setup a
'Simultaneous dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi base station’
On the Extreme you would “Create a Wireless Network” & “Allow this Network to
be Extended”.
On the Airport Express to “Extend a Wireless Network”.

Some Wi-Fi devices use the 2.4GHz wireless band, including iPhone, iPod touch,
and devices using 802.11b/g.
Other devices can use the higher-speed 5GHz band, such as the latest
802.11n-based Mac computers and Apple TV & iPad.
Instead of choosing one of the bands, AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule, & Airport
Express 802.11n now operates simultaneously on both bands, and your multi-band
devices automatically use the best available band.
This means all your Wi-Fi devices get the fastest possible wireless performance
and the best possible range.

If you need more help setting up a Airport Extreme N Dual-Band Base Station

Re: Portable HD Firewire 400

2012-04-03 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi Merv,

As far as I know, you don't need the firewire port on the drive to be FW400
- FW 800 is backward compatible.

All you need is a FW400 to FW800 cable, depending on the drive you buy it
may even be thrown in.

When FW800 drives first came out, they tended to ship with both fw800 &
fw400 ports (the first I bought was like this) - but then they just started
shipping with fw800 ports and some suppliers threw in both fw800 cables and
fw800 to fw400 cables (that's what I got with my second fw800 drive).

Cheers
