Re: the spinning beach ball has changed!

2015-10-01 Thread Robin
Upgrading from Yosemite to El Capitan can be equated to the previous upgrade
from Leopard to Snow Leopard. It's a no brainer but most improvements are under
the hood and you may not necessarily notice them.
Upgrade SuperDuper before you upgrade the OS.
Repairing permissions became irrelevant a few versions ago.

Re: the spinning beach ball has changed!

2015-10-01 Thread Philippe Chaperon
Hi Brian, Peter and All,

Many thanks again for the valuable information. My iMac has been updated and
needed a couple of restarts. I have checked MS Office 2011 and Excel is working
correctly.

One thing which happened thought is that the cooling fan of the iMac, which
after a year of usage had never been heard, was working at its maximum speed
although the internal temperatures were will within norms, and no applications
hoarding the CPU. I tried restarting the machine with no luck and finally had
to resort to a Reset of the SMC which solved the problem.

Thanks to both for the Disk utility info re loss of verify and repair
permissions. I guess this is good news?

I’ll wait for some time before upgrading my main iMac on which I have some
applications running constantly - Seti@home, AstroPulse and Rosetta. I am a bit
apprehensive mainly for Parallels and VM Ware Fusion as I do not know how they
will perform. Before taking the plunge I will update my full back-up and an
external disc, using my trusty SuperDuper, just in case!

Have a wonderful afternoon and a very safe week-end.

Kind regards dear WAMUG’ers,

Philippe C.

El Kapitan

2015-10-01 Thread Bill Parker
Just having upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.5 and found no significant difference in
speed and little else, I am now wondering whether Kapitan is worth the change.
I notice that on the upgrade website that extols the virtues of split screen
etc the customer reviews show about 10% giving it one star. (Just over 200
reviews). I am thinking wait and see. Unless I buy a larger external
screen, the spit screen mode would be too hard on a 15” MacBook Pro, or even on
the ext. screen I use frequently with two versions of a Word set up side by
side.

My main usage is Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 (that is often sluggish with
Word - blue beach ball seen often)

Nikon Transfer and Viewer for photography with original TIFF files up to 30MB
each shot

Photoshop elements ( latest version)

Acrobat Pro

Finale Print Music. and Dragon dictate

Hi Philippe,
Office, latest, just upgraded is working, mail fine, (I have a 17" MacBookPro).
Yes, reboot took longer than suggested, does restart a few times, they warn you
that it does.
There are some system voice upgrades to do after initial installation, so check
updates.
It isn't letting me log into iCloud, tried during installation and afterwards.
I will try again later.
Disk utility, only has First Aid, no verify and repair permissions, redundant?,
auto?
I did look Ronni!

Thanks for the report. Have you had a chance to test your applications,

I have finished downloading El Condor Pa... no! I mean El Capitan which took
close to 2 hours, but the installation is taking some time to finish. I hope
the iMac will boot tomorrow morning when I will be able to check the various

Re: Continual Console Log Entries re Address Book

2015-10-01 Thread Alan Smith
Any suggestions for clearing this ongoing problem?

More information found: The associated plist has a setting for a 3600 second
call. As the call is happening every 30 seconds, something is wrong. There is
probably a Scheduler somewhere that has stored corrupt data for the call time.
A hidden file? The found plist filename is: System/Library/Launch Agents/
com.apple.AddressBook.SourceSync.plist.

More observations, but may not be relevant: The Console log entries continued
regularly after trashing all ~/Library/Caches, and also continued when computer
was disconnected from the network.

Most Apple Community requests for help re "AddressBookSourceSync" refer to
system memory avalanche problems while connected to iCloud. I am normally
“permanently” signed out of iCloud, but even when signed in I did not notice
any significant CPU usage.

Cheers
Alan

iCloud issues with Contacts and Bookmarks

2015-10-01 Thread Alan Smith
My iMac Contacts and Safari Bookmarks data have changed in the last day or so.
I think the Safari Reading List may also have been changed. I think iCloud
data has merged with iMac data as a number of old, previously edited and
deleted entries have returned.

1. Can I delete Contacts and Bookmarks data in iCloud?
2. How can I determine what other data is stored in iCloud (and delete it)?
3. Can I cancel my iCloud account (which uses my standard Apple ID)?
4. I have signed out of my iCloud account on all my devices - two iMacs, an
iPad and an iPhone. Can I again edit my Contacts and Bookmarks (individually
on each device) and be sure that there will be no further “synchronising”?

This data merge may have been triggered when iTunes was upgraded to ver 12.3 a
week or so ago. I was continually prompted to sign in to iCloud. I eventually
did so. Months earlier I had downloaded physical copies of my purchases that I
wanted to keep and am happy to abandon the others. Then a gremlin interfered
- I could not sign out of the iCloud account from my iMac. This was sorted out
but required serious surgery. The patient and I are still convalescing.

Regards,
Alan
