imacs incompatible with imacs??

2006-10-02 Thread Dick Anderson
Having just bought a new iMac, I am horrified to find that it is almost
impossible to trasfer data from my old one to the new one. I had expected
that the older applications might not be transferable, but never the
Appleworks documents and databases,

I thought Rosetta was supposed to handle these problems, Apple goes to a
lot of trouble to get comptability with Windows, but not with older iMacs.

I have a very little success with transferring some documents into Microsoft
word on an apparently random basis, but the best I can do with Excel is
sometimes to get a jumbled list of the data. The "open" ssystem allows some
Appleworks files to be enabled, but I then get a message that a translator
is needed. Would maclinkplus be any good, and is there one which handles the
Intel system.

HELP!!!

FW: Friday mac Funny :-)

2006-09-16 Thread Dick Anderson
I've been using Macs since Mac Plus.
The last one I bought about 2006 was the first of the iMacs and mildly
regretted it because of its incompatability with PCs and shortage of soft-
and hard-ware which could be used by Macs.

The new ones do seem to be able to be able to use Microsoft Office for Mac.
at least, so I ordered and paid for a new iMac Intel Tiger, rather than a
PC,

But possibly there is an even worse incompatability - with previous Macs! I
had expected to able to use if not previous software, at least hardware.

Apparently the Canon printer I bought less than a year ago can't be used -
and, indeed, it's not clear whether ANY of the printers listed in the Mac
Store have drivers for the Intel Macs. My old Mac may be more compatible
with a PC than with a new Mac, or am I missing something?

Definitely NOT funny,

just my 2c to apples life cycle.

in 1979 i bought an appleII+, 32kB ram, used it for 5 years
1984 a apple IIc came onto my table, was in service for 10 years with
upgrades to 128kB ram, 4 disk drives, clock & microsoft basic card
(is actually still working)
1994 mac classic (b/w screen) with 64 meg ram, os7 & internet
capabilities did the jobs for 7 years
1997 mac clone umax (copy of 9600) with 512 meg ram, cd burner, os8&9
was my workhorse for 7 years
2004 a powerbook 17" g4 1gig ram, dvd burner took the place as main
machine (os9,10,tiger)
and now it looks alike that powerbook has a lifespan of only 4
years.

upgrading to tiger still costs me alot because of incompatible/old
software (bought in 2004) which ceased to work (eg dvd studio,
digital performer and many other high quality commercial software)
because of all the changes (called upgrades) in the operating system,
software makers have given up & make stuff for windows only now (eg
corel draw)

result: there is far less software for mac available & every 2 years
you have to replace them which costs a lot
on top of all: tiger loves to play beach ball (instead of doing the
job) thus it makes it the slowest operating system i have seen

windows xp is now 5years in service & still going strong...it
only needed sp2 & that is for free
during that time apple made 4 or 5 changes to the system, so serious
users had to !buy! new hardware & software

unix is more than 15 years in use

apple is using software tricks to make sure you are replacing
hardware & software regularerly (= money spinner for apple)

well i must be an apple nerdJames

Re upgrading iMac OS 8

2006-08-24 Thread Dick Anderson
Many thanks for all the replies and suggestions about this.
I think I'll buy a Tiger anyway and see what happens.
I can either use Appleworks 6 - if it's still available - with Text Edit or
NeoOffice for translating the occasional MS Word document. Or get MS Ofice
for Mac and hope I can get a translator to bring my old data bases and
spreadsheets over.
Another possibility is to try and find the previous level of iMac with
Panther and both native and Classic modes on it. Does anyone know of a
dealer who might still have one.

Thanks again.

Upgrading iMac OS8

2006-08-23 Thread Dick Anderson
IF I upgrade my OS 8.5 iMac to a new Tiger iMac, I'd want to transfer my
documents, data-bases and spreadsheets created on Appleworks 5.03. I'm
prepared to buy Office works for Mac.if that would do the trick. Apple
support didn;t gve me much help ("it might be possible").
One suggestion would be to use Appleworks 6, which is native to OSX, but
then I wouldn't be able to read attachments written in Word etc, which is
the thing that has annoyed me with my old system.
I also believe that Panther was able to read this (and other software for
Classic macs) but this has been discontinued. - perhaps I should look
around for a Panther iMac!!
I'm very frustrated, I was dreaming that with a new iMac, I could read all
the e-mail attachments I get, while still keeping all my data from the old
one.
Dudley Gager suggested I use Neooffice to read Microsoft files and use
Appleworks for most ue, but it seems a bit inelegant!! Will Appleworks6
still read the older version of Appleworks
Any suggestions, please?

Translators

2006-08-17 Thread Dick Anderson
I have one of the first iMacs, OS 8.6, I think about 2000 and am thinking of
upgrading to a new one.
The only serious problem I've had until recently has been getting Microsoft
e-mail attachments which I can't open in Appleworks. Using Maclink plus
sometimes works but never very well.
Presumably, if I get Microsoft Office for Mac that will be OK, but not if I
only get iWorks.
Alsp with a new Mac OSX, will documents etc I've created on my old iMac with
Appleworks and transferred to the new one automatically open when I use the
office for Works, or will I still be stuck with a translater?

Thanks,

Dick Anderson

imac major repairs, but MAJOR

2004-05-06 Thread Dick Anderson
I have an old iMac - from when they first came out,
My screen went blank, the thing turned off and wouldnt re-boot. But the age
of miracles is not yet past - my extended warranty had a month to run!
It took ages to repair and finally came back with a new screen and new
analogue board - estimated cost would have been $900 + $600.
I'm horrified at this - have others had similar experience with this type
and cost of repair.
Both Apple and I would have been better off if the iMac had been dumped and
I'd been given an eMac instead!
My previous macs have all gone on for ever - this one had other minor
problems and all the expensive hardware - printer, scanner, had problems. I
thought the point of things being much more than those for PCs was that they
were Mac reliable.
Any comments, please,

Dick Anderson

Crashes in Appleworks database

2003-01-04 Thread Dick Anderson
When I'm using databases on my iMac sustem 8.6 appleworks, the system
crashes when I try to copy a record to another applicaton.

What can I do about this? I thought of restoring the Apple works software
but got worried when I opened the imac restore disk. This suggests that it
will restore ALL the software. which I'd rather not do in case it upsets my
preferences etc.

if I press the icon does it restore everything
immediately or does it gove me the option later of chosing which things I
want to restore.

Sorry, this is very low-tech, but so am I!!

old games

2002-08-12 Thread Dick Anderson
We have acquired an old Mac powerbook100 (equivalent to the LC7) and would
like to load it with games suitable for our pre school/lower primary
grandchildren. The dealers haven't been interested in helping. If I download
to my iMac I can't get it off to a floppy!!

Has anyone got anything they could sell or copy to floppy for us please.

My wife is not Mac literate, and I'm off to NZ for a few weeks, so if you
could phone her on 9386 4405, we'd be grateful!
