Dear generous advisorsI have a word doc with pages in both portrait (text) and landscape (tables). If, when I go to print, I click on "save to pdf", only the portrait pages are converted, not the landscape.I have searched on-line for an answer but it appears the solution is to buy a pdf converter program. Although happy to buy software, I rarely have portrait and landscape in the same doc and would prefer to find a simple answer. Otherwise will purchase software as recommended.Word 12.2.7Macbook Pro 17" running 10.6.4Thanks

Daniel got the correct nuance. It is a Brother HL 5040. Never considered an
upgrade because it has never skipped a beat. Still got the colour printer
Daniel recommended (Epsom stylus R210) and the external back-up hard I bought
from him. Everything the man says I need continues to work fine.

Just imagine if Daniel went into recommending cars or stereo equipment. Hey,

Re: Macspeech dictate

2010-08-01 Thread Glenn Cardwell

After email discussions with MacSpeech Dictate support and then Plantronics
support when it became clear that the headset USB connector was at fault,
Plantronics in the US agreed on Thursday 29 July that they would send a
replacement unit. It arrived this morning. Less than two working days.

To find that, in 2010, some support desks actually work and respond
immediately.

Frankly, stunned. Pleased, but stunned.

I purchased this voice recognition software in Feb 2010.

Now tells me that: "This profile's microphone is missing".

I use the headset that came with the software. The microphone is identified as
C-media USB audio device. The headset is plugged in as normal. A restart
delivers the same message.

Have gone to system preferences > speech recognition > settings > line in as

Sounds like a failure somewhere as nothing has changed since it was operative.

Any tips gratefully received.

You transfer the music direct to your computer by USB. I am assuming
your model is much the same as mine.

I have so far only done a test transfer of one record. The software
you will be provided with is Audacity which I think is rather good
but you should download the latest version as the one provided will
probably be quite old. That app is all you will need I think. It is
a bit tricky setting up but once you do all is good. You can export
the download music from your records to iTunes and then burn or
play. The software help is quite good. I presume there are other
apps and no doubt someone will say so but I don't know of any.

Turntable

2009-09-25 Thread Glenn Cardwell

Buenos dias

I'm considering purchasing an Akai USB turntable ATT 023U.

The promotion states:
Direct recording function
This enables users to record their vinyl music directly to a USB hard
drive – without using a PC.

USB output
This provides users with a simple way to record and archive any record
collection, via their PC or Mac.

Question:
Has anyone had experience with playing and converting their vinyl
records to digital via a USB turntable?
This sounds simple. I'm presuming that it converts to mp3
automatically. Really new to me, so I'm not sure. Anything I should be
wary of?

Thanks for any help or reassurance offered.

Glenn

Can you please describe where you found the bulge? Can't find a

inspection. Can they prove I did? Where is the sign that says
"Warranty void if removed"? Is the bulge visible when battery installed.

Sorry, clicked send instead of Save.

Thought I would share this as it might help someone else:

I have a MacBook Pro (17") which will turn 2 years old in April. About
a month ago it started to randomly shutdown - and I mean like instant
shutdown, no warning! After some googling, I discovered it's a common
problem with this model's battery, and that it's also prone to
"battery bulging". So I took the battery out for inspection and sure
enough it had begun bulge. Further research (as mentioned previously
on WAMUG) led me to Apple's article extending the warranty from 1 to 2
years for MBP battery bought up to April 2007 (mine just scrapes in).

So I took the battery to an Apple service centre on Scarb Beach Rd,
and Apple came back and said that if the battery if removed then the
customer has to purchase a new battery!

WHAT THE? It's a laptop, you're aloud to remove them.

So I phoned Apple and finally got through to Customer Relations to ask
"what the?". They said Apple has changed their policy but in "good
will" we'll send you a new battery for free.

I now have it safely in my Laptop. So if your new battery request gets
knocked back, don't give up.

cheers
Travis

Yes, a higher bitrate creates a larger size file.
If you want to change the bitrate in iTunes:
1. Choose iTunes > Preferences - General and click Import Settings.

2. Choose an encoder from the Import Using pop-up menu (you select
MP3)

3. Choose a bit rate from the Setting pop-up menu (you select custom)
Then under the Stereo Bitrate select a lower Bitrate

4. Click OK.

5. Select your track in iTunes then choose Advanced > "Create MP3
Version"

Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a typical bit rate for a
podcast, as they vary greatly from as low as 32 kbps up to around
128 kbps.
As a rough guide to the use of different bit rates however, the
following may be helpful:

320 kbps - Virtually indistinguishable from original CDs
128 kbps - Typical for musical MP3s and quality podcasts
64 kbps - Common bit rate for speech podcasts
48 kbps - Reasonably common for longer speech podcasts
32 kbps - Poor, usually used to reduce download times

Is there a smarter way to do this?

I think you can direct Export to MP3 format in GarageBand v4.1.2

The Podcasters on WAMUG can probably give you more advice on
Podcasting.

Thanks again

I have done a search of the internet but with no joy. Old advice

there doesn't appear to be one with iTunes 8 (8.0.1).

I am grateful for any advice or websites that will help. Please
keep any response simple as I have no idea what .m4a, .aif or AAC
mean. Simply put, what is the best way to present a podcast to the
world, well, Hipcast anyway?

Re: podcast with garageband

2008-10-15 Thread Glenn Cardwell
My first ever use of the wamug group and I stuff up. This was an old
message (yesterday) I had drafted and since then I found out more from
the wamug website.

However, there is still a problem:

The podcast in Garageband (v4.1.2) was sent to my iTunes (8.0.1). The
original version was 3.4 MB. When I get iTunes to convert to a mp3
files, the size increases to 8.1MB. As I want to upload this to
Hipcast as a podcast (and later to iTunes), my gut feel is that the
size is too big.

The bit rate has changed from 64 kbps to 192 kbps in the conversion.
Is that the reason for the increase in size?

Is there a smarter way to do this?

Thanks again
