Re: iPhoto transfer

2009-08-29 Thread Norman Leslie

Hi,

I have hesitated to comment on the issue, but since I started it all
by posting the initial question, I will add my two cents worth.

I have been on the list for the last 7 years or so since coming to WA.
A friend here in Bunbury made me aware of WAMUG and as a long time Mac
user I have enjoyed and appreciated being a member of the list since.
Being able to access the resources of the list is very useful when
living in the country.

I would observe that there has been more than one case of "rage" in
recent times. However, I have noticed that the "rage" is selective. I
went back to read the Guidelines and Etiquette on the Mailing List
page and did not see a reference to the issue of "bandwidth" - but I
may have missed it. I have noticed that there are frequent
"violations" of the etiquette rule about checking the archives,
attempting to solve the problems prior to posting the question etc.,
which have not resulted in "rage".

I would echo Vlad's comments that where there is a "violation" it
should be "noted", unless it is a repeat offence. However, the
Guidelines and Etiquette should be applied consistently. If I were new
to the list and encountered the "web rage" I would have an entirely
different impression of WAMUG.

I would like to thank those who take the time, effort and energy to
make the list available and useful to us all.

I hope that common sense prevails so that we can all enjoy and benefit
from each other in a "rage free" environment.

I would also like to thank Rob Phillips for pointing me in the right
direction. Indeed, if I had taken the time to read the documentation
for iPhotoManager which I have used, I would have found how to achieve
what I wanted to do. So, yes I plead guilty to not having checked the
documentation I had available to me prior to posting the question on
the list.

As an aside, I also spoke with a "technical specialist" at Apple about
the matter - he was unaware of the matter, checked it out and advised
me that it was related to the inherent structure of iPhoto - he
forwarded the issue to Cuppertino for "immediate consideration". I
thought it "interesting" that a product specialist had to do some
checking himself to determine that when exporting an album one had to
choose between sequence and title.

Cheers

Rob Phillips was in error to send a graphic to the mailing list. He

more, I felt that it was important to share what I thought was a

that there was an unsolvable technical issue.

I got halfway through my reply, then realised that Norman was
expressing uncertainty about what I had suggested. I thought that

Hi Rob,

I currently use PhotoManger, but it will not allow me to do what I want.

I contacted Apple because I still have Apple Care on the MacBook. I
was put through to a "product specialist" after a bit of prompting.

The "product specialist" discovered that indeed, there is not a way to
export an album while retaining BOTH titles and sequence - it is a
problem with how the program is structured. He was surprised that this
was not possible - he said that it was possible back with iPhoto 4,
but I can't remember that for sure.

He has contacted Cupertino to advocate for the feature being made
available in any future upgrade. I was surprised that this product
specialist was not already aware of the limitation - does that say
something about the level of training?

Stay tuned, but don't hold your breath!

Try this:

Go to /Library/Internet Plug-ins (that's the one at the main level

I've called mine "Not used". Locate the Adobe plugin and move it to

Re-launch Safari, and see what happens when you try to open a PDF.
It should open nice and clean.

10.5.7 Update - Time Capsule & Canon printer

2009-05-19 Thread Norman Leslie

Hi,

I have 2 iMacs and a MacBook on a wireless network using Time Capsule.

All was well prior to the software update.

After installing the Combo Updater and running Disk Utility as
recommended, the two iMacs had no problem. However, the MacBook was
not backing up on Time Capsule. I tried a number of times without
success. I looked online and found that someone else was reporting the
same issue on TUAW, but no solution.

Then I connected the MacBook directly to Time Capsule via ethernet
cable. That solved the problem, but it did take 37 mins to "prepare",
33 minutes to "back up" and 11 minutes "finishing". I have just
checked and it subsequently backed up wirelessly in the usual amount
of time - about 4 minutes.

I hope this helps anyone encountering a similar problem.

As an aside, I have a Canon iP300 printer connected to one of the
iMacs. I can print from the iMac connected to that printer, but I
can't print from the other iMac nor the MacBook. Print sharing is on.
This worked before the update. Any thoughts

Hello Norman,

I have not received any of these Phantom "SPAM" emails. But, they
have been around for years though.

Select one of the blank messages and View>Message>Long Headers.

If you look through the detailed headers you will see where the
content of the message starts.
It's likely that the message was created by a 'zombie' system that
someone has taken over for the purposes of sending spam, and that
the program creating the spam message is messing up the format of
the email it's sending - which means that your email reader can't
find the sender, recipient, subject etc. where it expects them in
the message.

Just delete the messages - you're definitely not missing anything!

Cheers,
Ronni

Wireless issues

2009-02-15 Thread Norman Leslie

Hi Wendy & other WAMUG members,

I am pleased to report that all is up and working - after a call to
Apple.

The one thing that the Apple Tech support person had me do that I had
not done was to re-set the Airport Express station that was connected
to my previous network. Everything else, I had already done. The one
comment he made was that the sequence of operations may have made the
difference.

In case this helps Wendy or others, here are the steps he took me
through:

1. Re-set the Airport Express
2. Connect to the Airport Express using the Airport Icon on the menu
bar where it will show as an un-named network

3. Open Airport Utility which should see the Airport Express
4. Configure Airport Express
5. Plug in Time Capsule but do not connect to ethernet or modem - then
hit resent button
6. Open Airport Utility and you should now "see" and configure Time
Capsule

7. Connect Time Capsule to your modem and complete the configuration
8. You can now set up Airport Express to the network either to extend
the range of your network, or as I do to connect to a decent set of
speakers.

I hope I haven't missed any steps!

Good luck Wendy and anyone else.

Re: Lost wireless network

2009-02-15 Thread Norman Leslie

Hi Wendy and others,

It can't be just a Mauritius phenomenon because I am encountering very
similar problems here in Bunbury.

I just bought a Time Capsule on Thursday and set it up on Friday.
Initially all went well, but then I went back to connect an Airport
Express so that I could connect to quality speakers, that's when the
trouble started.

I get the same message when I use Airport Utility - "Airport Utility
was unable to find any Apple wireless devices."

I "App Zapped" Airport Utility and re-installed it. Same problem. We
have 3 computers in the house 2 iMac [Intels] and a MacBook [also
Intel] - all running on the latest Leopard. When I try Airport Utility
on any of the 3 machines I get the same error message. That is odd in
itself.

Fortunately, I still have my Snow Airport Base Station - when I use
that, I can access the Internet etc. just like before -however, when I
run Airport Utility - I get the same error message. When I look in
Network Preferences, it shows my network is there. So if it shows in
Network Prefs, why will Airport Utility not see it?

I have tried re-setting Time Machine, the modem, connecting Time
Machine via Ethernet - all to no avail.

It seems to me that Airport Utility is the problem, but why on all 3
computers? If I don't get it working this evening, I will call Apple
in the morning. I will pass along what they tell me if that proves to
be necessary.

And now it has just got worse! I can't connect by the Snow Airport - I
can only connect by ethernet direct from the modem!!

Stay tuned.

Hi Peter,

One particular layout I was trying to achieve had more fields than
records!

Your response forced me to go back and have another look at how I

Poirot eventually kicked in. I have increased the "depth" of the body
and "stacked" the fields for a record. The end result will do the trick.

Filemaker's Layout Mode does not support this in any way. In fact
I'm struggling to think of any database tool that does. By their
very nature, you are always going to have many more records than
fields, so a vertical arrangement of records displaying a set number
of fields (allowing "endless" scrolling) is the natural and obvious
approach. It's also much easier to make sense of.

Do you have any examples of the model you are trying to reproduce?

FileMaker Question

2009-02-03 Thread Norman Leslie

Hi Folks,

I haven't used FileMaker in a couple of years, so I am a little rusty.

I have checked FileMaker Support and Knowledge Base pages, as well as
a general Google inquiry but couldn't find what I was looking for.

I would like to create a "Report Layout" with the records in columns
and fields in rows - this is not an option in any of the Layout
Templates, where the fields are in columns and the records in rows.

Can someone put me out of my misery?

This is for a project I'm doing for the Bunbury Entertainment Centre
on a volunteer basis.

Thanks in advance

iBook for sale

2009-02-02 Thread Norman Leslie

Hi Folks,

I have a 14"iBook for sale.

It is three and a half years old, still in very good condition - no
dead pixels etc

Details are as follows:
Power PC G4 1.33 GHz
60 GB Hard Drive
L2 Cache 512
Memory 768 MB [it was upgraded at time of purchase]
Combo Drive
Airport Extreme installed
Firewire & USB
Charger
Original software
It even comes in its original box!

I have erased the drive, installed original software and upgraded to
10.5.5 - checked it with Disk Warrior and gets a clean bill of health.

$400.00 ono would seem to be fair price.

Free delivery to Perth!

Re: Avery Labels & MS Word

2008-07-13 Thread Norman Leslie

Hi All,

The solution to my problem was to take time to read all the options!
In the Label Options window there is a pop up for the brand of labels.
The default is Avery, then there are another 8 or so options, one of
which is Avery A4 & A5 - I failed to see this second Avery option.

Thanks to Lloyd, Merv, Jane and Michael for responding.

P.S. As for iPhone - if you need a Telstra iPhone for coverage
reasons, those of us in the SouthWest have to drive to Perth and hope
that they have some in stock in Morley, or drive to Kal!!

Re: Avery Labels & MS Word

Hi Jane,

I am using Word 10.1.8 on Leopard 10.5.4.

I bought MS Office when I was living in Canada which follows US sizes
[ I will not comment any further!!]

What is interesting is that the individual label sizes are showing in
metric, but the page size in the Options dialogue box shows the page
as being Letter, despite the page set up showing A4.

I detect there is a conflict there somewhere, whereby I can change the
page size in page set up, but the Avery page set up is not up for
negotiation on the Label Options dialogue box.

I am checking out the templates on the Avery,au web site.

Thanks for the response

Re: ING

2008-01-21 Thread Norman Leslie

Hi,

Thanks to Ronni and Michael for their postings.

Unfortunately, the problem persists while the plot thickens!

I tried your suggestions, Ronni one at a time, but after doing all of
them as well as running Disk Utility, there was no progress.

We have 3 Macs in the house, all with the same OS and Safari version.
[2 Intel iMacs & a Power PC iBook], and the problem only exists on the
one machine.

The one that it doesn't work on, and the one which I use, is a very
early Intel iMac 4.1 with Intel Core Duo, 1.83 GHz, 2MB of L2 cache.

When I hover over the "online banking login", the cursor changes, the
# symbol is added to the address line, and "go to # on this page"
appears on the bottom left of the window, but nothing happens.

Well, actually something does happen!! I thought I should try several
more times to make sure that the problem was there. Now I don't have a
problem!! I wondered if there was a problem area on the screen whereby
the hyper link was not active for some reason. So I moved the window,
tried the same thing and voila it worked! I returned the window to the
earlier location and it works there!!

Computers work in mysterious ways! I had been trying various things
over the last few days since the original posting, but to no effect. I
don't believe I did anything different, but all is well now.

Thanks to all those who spent time trying to replicate my problem or
find a solution.

ING

2008-01-16 Thread Norman Leslie

Hi Folks,

I tried to login into ING Banking using Safari - when I clicked on
Online Banking hyperlink, nothing happened except a "#" was added to
the URL in the address line.

I have not encountered this before - I last used the website last week.

When I tried the same thing using Firefox, all worked fine.

I know some members were having ING issues a couple of weeks back.
Before contacting ING, I thought it might be helpful to know whether
the issue is just happening to me here in Bunbury.

Cheers

Fwd: FileMaker Pro 9.0v2 update delivers Leopard compatibility and more

2007-11-01 Thread Norman Leslie

For those not on a mailing list from FileMaker, this may be of interest.

The update for v 8.5 is not due till December, and will still not fix
the instant web publishing feature - for more details follow the link
at the bottom of this page.

FileMaker Pro 9.0v2 update delivers Leopard compatibility and more

FileMaker has released FileMaker Pro 9.0v2 and FileMaker Pro 9.0v2
Advanced, available now via a
downloadable update. The 9.0v2 update provides compatibility with
Mac OS X Leopard as described below,

and other features, and is recommended for all users.

Here is a list of other fixes in the 9.0v2 update that developers
will be most interested in:

Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard):
The application no longer crashes when creating files if the system
language and region do not match.

General Fixes:
Mac OS X: Get(SystemVersion) now returns the correct version on Mac
OS X operating systems ending with

double digit revision numbers, i.e. 10.4.10.

The database consistency check initiated on launch will no longer
incorrectly report that a database is damaged

for some databases that can be opened and used without any problems.

Printing Fixes:
The update addresses issues which cause the application to crash
when a page range is specified.

Relationships:
A relationship with a global field now returns all related records
if the value of the other key is empty.

For a complete list of fixes please refer to the updater Read Me or
FileMaker downloads at

http://www.filemaker.com/support/downloads/index.html

Click here for the details and to download the FileMaker Pro 9.0v2
and FileMaker Pro 9.0v2 Advanced

Leopard update now.

Please note that this update does not fix issues with the FileMaker
Pro 9 Instant Web Publishing (IWP) feature
running on Leopard. We intend to make IWP compatible with Leopard
in an update expected in December 2007.

We expect to deliver a Leopard compatibility update for our Server
products in early 2008. FileMaker Server 9 and
FileMaker Server 9 Advanced currently do not deploy properly on
Leopard. In the meantime, FileMaker Pro 9 and
FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced clients running on Leopard do work with
FileMaker Server and Server Advanced running

on Tiger or earlier versions of Mac OS X.

For timely news on the availability of compatibility updates for
IWP, and for FileMaker Server 9 and FileMaker

Server 9 Advanced, please subscribe to FileMaker News.

Click here for info on earlier versions of FileMaker software and
Mac OS X Leopard.

FileMaker Issue

2007-10-25 Thread Norman Leslie

Hi,

In light of Toby's posting, here is a link to what FMPro has to say

http://www.filemaker.com/support/leopard.html

They don't intend to do anything for those of us who are using
anything but the latest versions!!

iWeb issues

2007-07-01 Thread Norman Leslie

Hi,

Has anyone else had experience with using iWeb? I checked the super
duper Archive page but couldn't find any reference to it.

I recently posted an iWeb site sharing a blog and photos with friends
and family overseas.

It appears the iWeb does not work too well on Windows when using IE.
I had occasion to check this on a friend's Windozw machine yesterday
and the results are very poor - they pages either don't load, or load
very slowly, or partially load. Navigation between pages is almost
non-existent.

I had a look on the Apple Support sight and found this
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304349

It identifies a problem with vertical lines and recommends making
vertical lines greater than 1 point in size.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? Has anyone found this
solution to be effective?

It would be easier if my friends were either Mac users or used
Firefox on Windoze!! Maybe I should choose my friends more
carefully, but I can't chose my relatives!!

All ideas welcomed.

Thanks

Norm Leslie

Future of WAMUG

2007-06-13 Thread Norman Leslie

Hi,

One of the intriguing aspects of the discussion on the future of
WAMUG has been the responses coming from outside of Perth - I had
assumed that there were only one or two of us in the country, and
today I see we even have an overseas member! Living outside of Perth
makes it very hard to attend meetings - I would not relish a 2 hour
drive home at the end of the meeting - and I only have to get to
Bunbury!

I would echo the sentiments already expressed, namely that there is a
role for WAMUG in the future. It may not be the same as was
originally envisaged, but the sign of a healthy organisation is one
that changes with the times.

I think that it would help advance the cause if the discussion could
be more focused - I think that was where Ken Woods was heading with
his e-mail earlier this afternoon.

If I could be so bold, might I suggest that a questionnaire be
formulated so that responses could be more easily collated and
therefore provide clearer direction? The questionnaire would have to
be carefully developed - input from someone with experience/expertise
would be an asset. The questions would hopefully create a better
understanding of what people appreciate with the present set up as
well as ideas for future directions.

Could the existing leadership delegate the task of creating the
questionnaire to a group of "learned persons"? From what I can
gather, the existing leadership has been doing most of the hard yards
of late and would welcome some assistance with this task. While not
suggesting for a moment that I am a "learned person", I would be
willing to assist. One can't put forward an idea that involves time
and energy, if one is not willing to contribute.

Scanner for sale

2007-04-23 Thread Norman Leslie

Hi Folks,

I have an Epson Perfection 2450 Scanner for sale. It is in very good
condition.

It comes with the original documentation and software incl. Epson
Twain software CD.

This particular model is no longer sold, but is supported by Epson.

In light of recent discussion, I should add that it comes with a 3
pin plug!!

Before putting it out to a wider audience, I thought I would canvas
WAMUG members first.

I would be happy with $125.00. I can deliver it next time I'm in
Perth [this Friday would be the earliest] or to parts of the SouthWest.

I have been very happy with it - the only reason I am selling it is
that I have bought a scanner capable of "bulk scanning" slides - have
over 4000 slides that I want to scan, and the 2450 does them 4 at a
time!!

Please reply "off line" to keep unwanted mail to members to a minimum.
