Re: [WAMUG] The Messaging Co.

2024-07-19 Thread Peter Crisp via WAMUG
Yes, this is something I have an issue with too. When I rang the Westnet
people, they said there would be 12 months “no costs” after transition. My
entire family (5 of us) have transitioned and now, 6 weeks after the fact, they
saying - here’s your cost schedule, starts in September. Gee that was a quick
year!

I think I’ll roll over simply because the task of changing email address is an
enormous task.

It sucks though, with no take-out or discount by Westnet deciding their
customers no longer get email management in their plan, they take the saving
but customers now have to pay a fee. Yes it is a small fee, but it’s the
principle of the matter.

Re: [WAMUG] Unable to send videos or MMS

2023-12-10 Thread Peter Crisp via WAMUG
Does a regular text message deliver with "Blue" text box and Delivery
confirmation to the same recipient? Is the video file larger than 5MB -
this is the limit for an iMessage video file where some of the other
apps have larger file size limits. Try sending a small video (5 second
clip say) or try sending to a family member in the same room as you.

Perhaps you could cycle to OFF the Settings>Messages>iMessage button,
wait a moment and then cycle back ON and retry.

 Hi DJ
I have an iPhone 12 Mini with 17.1.2
I just used iMessage to text a video clip to another iPhone.
No problem … sent and received.
Perhaps during the last update something in Message settings
 changed.
I have had that happen with other updates in the past.
Sometimes a setting will return to DEFAULT without you changing it.

Re: [WAMUG] NBN fibre questions

2023-11-28 Thread Peter Crisp via WAMUG
Yes Neil and Rosemary, I believe you're correct there Neil. Depending
how handy you are, you could buy yourself a long length of Cat 6 cable
to run from your NBN box to a wall point (new or old) for a dedicated
connection between router and NBN box. I did this for my sons room at
the back of my house - 30m Cat 6 for direct connection to an Apple
Airport Express for local Wifi signal strength in his room.

If not so handy, then use one of these guys. I did a Google search
"domestic internet cabling perth" which gave lots of hits. Here's one.

 Re: [WAMUG] NBN fibre questions
 Hi Rosemary,
I'm no expert here but my reasoning is:
The fact that you get the speed you are expecting when the modem is
plugged direct to the NBN box would suggest that the problem is not
with your modem but with the cabling/network between the NBN box and
 the wall socket.
You say that there is cabling from the garage to "other places" in
the house – from your description, these are phone outlets rather
than ethernet outlets and you then connect from this wall socket to
the DSL port on the modem?
More than one phone outlet means that there would be at least one
splitter somewhere to split the signal to the various phone outlets.
The splitter(s) could be in the garage or in the ceiling and could
well be the problem – you really need the modem connection to the
NBN box to be as direct as possible.
I suspect the simplest/easiest solution is to have the router
plugged directly into the NBN box in the garage and then setup the
wireless network of the router so everything connects to that – you
would need to check that you get good wireless coverage from the
garage to wherever you need it in the house (depending on the house
size/construction you might need a wireless extender or a modem with
 better wireless performance.
If you need to have the modem elsewhere (eg in the study) make sure
you have a single good connection between there and the NBN box –
how easy this is to achieve really will depend on the actual
physical configuration and accessibility of your existing
 network/cabling.
 Just some thoughts HTH.
 Cheers
 Neil

Hi all,

We have just upgraded to NBN Fibre to the Premises. The speed
 we get
with the modem attached straight to the NBN box is about 10
 times
faster than when it is connected to the wall socket in the
 study. Our
house is 61/2 years old and was cabled from the garage to
 other places
in the house when we bought it. The westnet/ iiNet guy said
 the cabling
might be too old to carry fibre speeds.

The present wall socket in the study just looks like a phone
 socket
but it does carry the signal to the modem albeit slowly. The
 distance
is not great …it goes up from the NBN box in the garage in
 conduit to
the ceiling, presumably in the ceiling and down the wall in
 the study
next door.

What sort of professional would be able to re-cable so the
 speed was
maintained to the study?

Would a more uptodate modem also help maintain better speeds?
 The
present one is an iiNet black TG model.

Cheers

Re: [WAMUG] Any fix for a faulty Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad?

2023-11-26 Thread Peter Crisp via WAMUG
Hi Brian, It is worth plugging the keyboard into another computer with
a USB port to test it. Even a Windows computer or a Macbook if you or
someone you know has one. That would test the working function of the
keyboard. Is it possible by coincidence the batteries in the keyboard
need replacing - if it has batteries even though USB connected.

I'm not sure how to disassociate the device from your iMac to restart
the association again as though it were a new keyboard. Hopefully
someone else here knows how to do that.

[WAMUG] Any fix for a faulty Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad?
 Hi,
I disconnected my iMac from the mains last night when I saw the
 lightening heading our way.
When I reconnect this morning the Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad
 is no longer responding.
It is a USB wired keyboard not bluetooth.
The built in hub still works. The caps lock light does not come on.
The cost of getting it repaired (it is way out of warranty) would I
imagine be similar to the cost of a new one.
I can’t see any easy way into it but was wondering if there was any
hope of getting it working again. Perhaps a combination key press or
 some such thing.
I have another Magic Keyboard without the Numeric Keypad that I am
currently using. I am used to having the keypad and would like it
 back again.
 Thanks

 Hi Pete, Robin and Stephen
I am accessing Webmail through my browser Firefox. This goes back
 to
the early days when we travelled and I wanted to check my emails. I
didn't want my emails downloaded to an internet cafe and then not
 visible at our next destination.
When I ask for webmail using the old method I used for iinet I now
 get
a TMC logon screen. I log on to this using my internet name and
password and this takes me to the old webmail sign-on screen.I log
 on
 again and it works well.
I have tired to use Apple 'Mail' and it is pretty good but old
 habits
are hard to change I am used to the 'layout' of webmail. Much to
 the frustration of my daughter!

 problem?

HI Stephen, yes by simply “Opting In” to have Westnet migrate your
email service to TMC, you’re merely saying to Westnet - at the deadline
date, transition my email service to TMC. I don’t believe the
transition has happened yet. The greeting email we received upon

It’s junk as far as I’m concerned but there may be someone here who might want

removing the WiFi network from the stack of WiFi networks in the stack

Ensure also that it sits as the first network in order of the stack of

Re: [WAMUG] Mac mini

2022-12-06 Thread Peter Crisp via WAMUG
AH, I see your problem now - so it is the Apple account login password
you don't have. Sorry I went down the wrong burrow. I actually don't
know how to recover the Apple Password if it becomes lost. I hope
someone else here can help - I'd like to know too.

I suppose a call to Apple Help may get you along the way to success but
if you're outside of the Apple Care date not sure if they'll help.
   Kind Regards

 Thanks Peter,
I should have more specific when I fire up I am asked to set time
 and date
etc as I have no password to startup but I need a password to unlock
 to
change date and time which is the one I have forgotten my other
 problem is
even though in system preferences it indicates I am connected to the
 net
the network in the top of the page menu is blanked out and when I
 try to
open safari you are not connected to the internet message appears by
 the
way this mac mini is old and running HI sierra.

Re: [WAMUG] Mac mini

2022-12-06 Thread Peter Crisp via WAMUG
Hi Juliet - yes, if you go to the ABC iView site via your browser or
app and try to Log In, you select the "With email" option. Once there,
there is usually a "Forgot Password" button. If you select this, you
will get a reset password link to your Inbox and you're on your way
   again.

I use Passdiary as my holder of all passwords - very useful to minimise
this problem recurring. I have literally hundreds of different accounts
and no two are the same. There's polenty of other password manager apps
   available too.

[WAMUG] Macbook Pro 2013 Retia 13" - Battery suspect

2022-11-10 Thread Peter Crisp via WAMUG
Hi there. I bought a Macbook Pro 2013 Retina 13” in 2013 (late). It has been
and is still a reliable Macbook. It doesn’t get used for much but I do need it.
A few months back I noticed the keyboard area beginning to bulge upwards and
the keyboard alloy shell is deforming upwards. It still is working fine. I keep
it on power all the time and rarely take it away from the power to use it for
portability. Bulge is becoming more pronounced over time.

My suspicion is the nearly 10 year old battery is expanding and pushing up the
chassis from beneath the keyboard. I see some online DIY battery replacement
procedures and I’ve done many other Macbook Air, Pro batteries before - but the
Retina seems more complex, though not overly daunting for my relevant
experience in doing these tasks. I could give it a go.

Naturally I have backups all in order in the event of a disaster.

Has anyone here done a 2013 MBP Retina 13” battery change - or would Apple even
touch it?

Comments please.

Thanks in advance

Peter Crisp.

Re: [WAMUG] Decision time: MacBook Pro battery

2022-09-28 Thread Peter Crisp via WAMUG
Hi Tim, I had a very similar experience in the last couple of weeks for
   an MBA (Mid 2012) I am selling - (daughter's ex-school used MBA). I
thought the battery was fine and when a potential buyer came over, it
wouldn't boot into the setup screen (I had previously erased it). When
I put the power lead on it, it did boot up, as soon as the power lead
was disconnected, screen went black. So I surmised the battery was
completely shot. When I left it on charge overnight prior to selling,
the charge lead light remained orange and I noted too that the power
block was cold - so no energy going into the dead battery. Light
remained orange for days - it was never going to go green.

So I bought a replacement battery (A1466 MBA), fitted it and then
charged it. Now it boots fine whether on charger lead or not. I am also
aware that the eBay batteries are potentially dubious life (when
compared with new Apple batteries fitted by Apple), but for $38 I was
ok with that for what is quite an old machine that is otherwise a good
   working MBA.

If I were in your position, I would get myself an eBay battery ($70 odd
from a quick search) to get yourself going again. From there you can
decide either to keep it in operation or peel off the data you need
from it and get a new (or newer used) MB. I wouldn't reckon that $299
is worth spending on such an old machine. You can get 4 eBay batteries
for the same and they're an easy DIY fit. Just watch the myriad of
   clips on YouTube.
   Kind Regards
   Peter Crisp

[WAMUG] Decision time: MacBook Pro battery
 Good morning
A1502 late 2013 MacBook Pro. Still suitable for purpose.
Couple of days ago I got a ‘service required’ warning saying the
battery was at the end of its life. Now the machine won’t start up,
even if the power supply is plugged in. Interestingly the power
charger brick is not at all warm, indicating no charge going in but
the little orange light on the magnetic plug is on.
Apple website estimates $299 to replace the battery. A new M2 costs
 $2000
I use VMware Fusion to run two native PC apps and it works as I
require so I’m hesitant to upgrade in case that stops functioning.
Do I just get the battery replaced or replace the machine?. I have a
feeling it’s no longer supported for OSX upgrades.
 Wise thoughts appreciated.

Re: [WAMUG] Two iPhones receiving my SMS replies ?

2022-09-07 Thread Peter Crisp via WAMUG
Hi Stephen, I can recall I had this problem many many years ago. I was
thinking the quick solution is the one Daniel indicated would be a
quick one for you. But there is another way and this has been 100% the
best way forward for my family of 5 people. We all shared the one Apple
ID at one point in time and it sort of worked ok and using the solution
Daniel indicated we kept our texts to ourselves across our own devices.
When Apple introduced the Family Sharing functionality, that
revolutionized this issue of overlapping texts between users to
disappear but many other things became very easily managed.

The link below is worth a read and it may seem daunting but is actually
   very easy to set up.

For my family - I am the Organiser, my wife (is created as a
Parent/Guardian) and three kids are all Family members in the Family I
created. My wife and I both have ability to Approve or Decline our kids
purchase of apps (underwritten by my credit card). Apps bought by any
family member automatically gives all family members the ability to
download that same app for no more payment as well. In app purchases
are Apple ID specific - one to be aware of but still needs specific
approval for each in app purchase. In setting up the family, each
family member will need to create their own Apple ID (email and
password) to set up their future in the Apple ecosystem. This may be
challenging for your wife if you're to be the Organiser and she is a
'subordinate' Family Member (But still with Organiser authority to
purchase etc) as she will become distanced from the things she has at
her fingertips that are associated with your Apple ID now but making
the break is something worth considering. The link should explain the
process of migrating things across (Contacts, Mail etc)

   Kind Regards

 Thanks Daniel.
I went looking for that but her iPad has no phone number.
So her only option is the Apple ID … that is my issue.
