Re: Mac mini vers iMac

2010-09-01 Thread Touchwood

Hi John (and anyone who might have been curious...)

My new 21.5" i5 3.6GHz iMac is a keeper...I'm happy with the
screen...I wouldn't say I'm ecstatic with the screen
because it has some feint yellow mottling on the left lower side...it
is still not as uniform in appearance as my current G5 iMac.

Much better than the previous rejected iMacs though.

Screen is bright and sharp, the computer is super quiet, everything
seems to work and the external case has no
manufacturing defects unlike the last two iMacs I received at the
beginning of the year.

Here's hoping it gives me the service & reliability I got (still
getting) out of the G5.

Cheers

By the time you spec up a Mac mini and add the cost of the

Last December I purchased a new iMac and its screen was bad
(yellow blotches), nowhere near the quality of my current G5 iMac.
Two screen replacements and two replacement computers later, Apple
still could not give me an iMac with an acceptable screen,
and the last two iMacs also had manufacturing defects in the
bargain (one had black paint scratched off on the inside of the
glass border

and the other had a ding in the lower right front corner.)
In the end I gave up and managed to get a refund...the whole

I've waited until this recent refresh to try again and with some
trepidation I have ordered another iMac.
In fact it is ready for me to pick up from the courier depot

Re: Mac mini vers iMac

2010-08-28 Thread Touchwood

Hi Rob

The problem with my screens was that the yellow tinge was not even
across the whole screen.
It showed as three flares/blotches of yellow coming up from the
bottom increasing in

height from left to right.
Although calibrating did help a little, because the tingeing/
blotching was so uneven, it did not

solve the problem.

I should have mentioned that my purchase was a 21.5" iMac.
The 27" screens appear to be faring much better this time around
while the 21.5"

still seems problematic.

Morning All,

I have noticed this issue with iMacs previous and current models,
also a lot of LED monitors of recent purchase.
But, once monitor has been calibrated it is perfect no tint, cannot
fault current 27" iMac once achieved.

Reasoning for this is quite simply, colour temperature settings of
monitors are set for Northern Hemisphere which use a cooler
temperature being Red - Orange- Yellow/Bone as it gets close to a
natural tone? Hotter being natural to a blue which for us in
Southern Hemisphere is closer to our natural lighting conditions.

So, economics of where monitors are to be used is why monitors are
such, as is the colour profiles within colorsync and other default
colour profiles or software.

Monitors used to be sold this way and some professional monitors
still are.

Another reason as most people have shown through surveys and are
not bothered by such a tint, is it is a lot more comfortable to use
this way. Just try setting Apple gamma profile to a hotter
temperature and see how you feel after an hour or more.

G3 Beige Mini Tower - any use to anyone ?

2010-01-23 Thread Touchwood

Hi

Bit of a long shot here but...

FInally getting around to recycling some old Mac computers in storage.
Seems a shame to consign this one to the recycler without a second
chance.

I have a working PPC G3 Beige Mini Tower
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Macintosh_G3
333Mhz Processor
384 MB RAM
8.5 GB SCSI HD (it can also take additional IDE Drives)
Reasonable 15" Apple Multi Scan Monitor, Keyboard & Mouse

The latest OS X version this model can run is 10.2 Jaguar, though I
believe with a G4 upgrade

it could theoretically run Leopard.

I wiped its drive yesterday and reinstalled Jaguar.

Any takers ? Note that I am in Bunbury, though I do get up to Perth
from time to time.

I also have a 7200 and an 8600 which were both still working before I
pulled the RAM,
and some old StyleWriter printers, but they're all definitely off to
the recycler ;-)

Doing this clear out exercise makes two things apparent
The waste of obsolescence is gut wrenching and the advance in
processors & hard drives is mind boggling.

Cheers
Neil

Re: Ethermax Ethernet Docking Station and BigPond Next G

2008-10-01 Thread Touchwood

Hi Andrew

Thanks for your info. (I believe I may have spoken with you at
the end of last year when I was
enquiring about BIgPond NextG experiences, but I no longer have the
relevant emails)

I hear the resignation in your voicelike you, I had no choice but
to use BigPond Wireless NextG

if I wanted to access Broadband.

At least we got a price reduction in the plans at the end of August
(though extra usage increased to 0.25c/MB)
but, compared to ADSL users, we are still getting taken to the
cleaners. ( I am currently on the $60 for 1 GB plan)

I may go with the Ethermax...but Gary has just emailed me off list
with a suggestion that the Aiport Extreme Base Station
might be an alternative...though I have no idea if it will work in
the same way as the Ethermax.

I will investigate furtherthanks again

I use this product at home, although I didn't like having to fork

extra $299 just because Telstra forces you to use a USB modem. Once
it is

all set up, however, you can configure your network as you wish.

I find that the modem itself needs to be rebooted from time to time
(sometimes more than once a day, sometimes not for several days).

To summarise, if you are keen to use an outrageously expensive,
slow service
with a low bandwidth quota (I think we pay $100 a month for 3 Gigs)
like
Telstra, then go for it. Unfortunately there was no other option

Installing OS 9.1 on 14.1 iBook?

2002-05-16 Thread Touchwood
Hi all

I've tried the Apple Knowledge Base for info on this but no luck.

I can't get my 14.1 iBook to boot from a 9.1 system disk and if I try to run
the 9.1 installer it says "This program cannot run on this computer etc."

I assume this is a firmware issue ie: the minimum system for the 14.1 iBook
is 9.2 ?

Is it possible to "downdate" the firmware to get 9.1 to run on the iBook,
or is this just asking for trouble ?

I'm currently running 9.2.2 but it's giving me some problems and anecdotal
evidence seems to indicate that a number of people find 9.1 more stable than
9.2.2I'd like to test that theory...

Many thanks
Neil

Re: Should I buy OSX?

2002-04-25 Thread Touchwood
Just be aware that current versions of MIDI/Audio programs like Cubase won't
launch or run using Classic emulation in OS10.
Classic Emulation won't talk to your Audio/Midi interfaces.

You need to boot in OS9.

It would also be wise to have a separate partition or drive
containing the OS9 System Folder that you boot from
to use your MIDI/Audio apps.
Booting from the OS9 System Folder that OS10 is using for Classic emulation
is not a good idea for MIDI/Audio apps.

Once you have 10 installed you need to make a setting in the Classic
control panel to ensure it does not use your "clean" 9 System Folder
for classic emulation...set it to use the "other" OS 9 System Folder.

When the 10 versions of these programs start rolling out it will be good,
because we'll be able to do away with the 3rd party programs like OMS and
Free Midi that we currently need to use for communication with MIDI apps
and USB MIDIinterfaces...OS10 has "inbuilt" MIDI communication...

Re: uploading website

I would recommend "Transmit" from Panic as well...

http://www.panic.com/transmit/index.html

Maybe not the cheapest (approx AU$50) but probably the best
and you can download and test it out before you buy.

Version available for OSX now as well...

Will this G3 Play DVD's??

2001-11-29 Thread Touchwood
Hi

I hope someone can help me here...
I recently aquired a Beige G3 with a DVD-ROM drive
but have been unable to get it to play a DVD.

There's nothing wrong with the drive, it plays and reads CDs
fine and mounts any DVD on the Desktop.

I can't seem to sort out the software side of things and I think the
problem may be with the installed display card. (see Apple Profile details
below)

Research on the net indicates that the installed drive
(see Apple Profile details below) should should run with Apple DVD Player
with no patch required as long as the Apple CD/DVD Driver/extension is 1.2
or later

I still haven't been able to get Apple DVD player to open
up on the G3, I've tried various Versions and patches with
both OS 9.1 & OS 8.6. ... usually end up with some sort of dialogue box
saying "hardware is not supported".

Maybe the installed ATI Mach64_3DUPro Display Card
is not capable of handling DVD

Do I need to install an alternative display/video card?

Monitor is Apple Multi Scan 15".

Specs via Apple System Profiler...

Apple DVD Player 2.2 for OS8.6 Download??

2001-11-21 Thread Touchwood
Hi

I wonder if anyone can direct me ta URL for a download
of Apple DVD Player 2.2 to use with OS 8.6.

I've drawn a blank with Version Tracker and at the Apple site.

Failing that, would someone be prepared to email me a
copy of their Apple DVD Player software that they are using
with 8.6.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the latest compatible version
with OS 8.6 was 2.2.

Thanks
