Hi Ray,

You are correct in what you have said, but what is your reasoning
behind going to all that trouble, why don't you either use TextEdit
or Pages Application to open the Word DOCX files? Is it because you
wish to just use the images or original assets?

Double click the docx file and it will open in which ever
Application you have set as default.

You have been able to Open Edit and save back in Word .docx
format from Text Edit and Open Edit and 'Export' as Word.docx
from Pages for a long time.

Re: Useful MS .docx file tip

2010-11-10 Thread Ray Forma

Ronda,

Obviously one would open the .docx file with a recent version of MS Word, or
the other apps you mention. However, I have often found that when I copy a
raster image from a .docx file opened with MS Word, that the copied version has
reduced resolution compared with the one I get with the '.zip' workaround.

I also realise that one of the 'hidden extra features' of MS Word is to often
reduce the resolution of raster images that the author inserts into a MS Word
document. However, the '.zip' workaround delivers all there is to deliver.

I must experiment to find out if copying raster images out of .docx files
opened with TextEdit results in the same resolution reduction that MS Word
delivers. That would be much easier than the '.zip' workaround.

Did you know that Word's DOCX file format is a glorified ZIP file? Change the

.docx files

2007-06-25 Thread Severin Crisp
Thanks to those who responded to my earlier query. There are a
number of solutions but I settled on a MS patch which docx finds
in Version Tracker. It installs in Office2004 and is
straightforward and automatic thereafter. The .docx file is
converted to an .rtf retaining some but not all of the original
formatting and prettyings.
Why is MS so hell bent on making life difficult for even other
Windows users, apparently .docx is the default format for Word2007
under Vista and is not back compatible at all.

Another triumph, Bill!

Details for file extension: DOCX - Word Microsoft Office Open XML
 Format Document (Microsoft Corporation)

Office Word is an authoring program that gives you the ability to
create and share documents using a set of writing tools. This is the
new upcoming format for Microsoft Office documents. It is a
combination of XML architecture and ZIP compression for size
reduction. Microsoft promises the format will be open (published for
anyone to use) and prior versions of Office, using components
provided by Microsoft for Office 2000, XP, and 2003 will be available
to perform document conversion. Remember that these are promises by
Microsoft. We have yet to see the actuals. This format is not the
same as the OpenDocument standard, also an XML-based standard being
developed as a true open standard (see the OpenDocument Fellowship
 for more information).

Re: .docx

2007-03-30 Thread Shay Telfer
Details for file extension: DOCX - Word Microsoft Office Open XML
Format Document (Microsoft Corporation)

Office Word is an authoring program that gives you the ability to
create and share documents using a set of writing tools. This is the
new upcoming format for Microsoft Office documents. It is a
combination of XML architecture and ZIP compression for size
reduction. Microsoft promises the format will be open (published for
anyone to use) and prior versions of Office, using components
provided by Microsoft for Office 2000, XP, and 2003 will be
available to perform document conversion. Remember that these are
promises by Microsoft. We have yet to see the actuals. This format
is not the same as the OpenDocument standard, also an XML-based
standard being developed as a true open standard (see the
OpenDocument Fellowship for more information).

  Regards,
  Eugene

NeoOffice now apparently supports Office 2007 Word documents, not
that anyone's sent me one yet :)

http://neooffice.org/

I believe as Microsoft is dropping visual basic support on the Mac it
may be a way forward for those who require Excel Macros (and don't
want to rewrite them in Applescript :)

Have fun,
Shay

Thanks Eugene,

My client has just got back to me. She was using her husband's computer
which has MS Office 2007. Compatibility problems apparently - even with her
Windows computer. She has now Saved As RTF and sent that to me so all is
well.

Regards

Lloyd
