Re: Useful MS .docx file tip
Ronda, Obviously one would open the .docx file with a recent version of MS Word, or the other apps you mention. However, I have often found that when I copy a raster image from a .docx file opened with MS Word, that the copied version has reduced resolution compared with the one I get with the '.zip' workaround. I also realise that one of the 'hidden extra features' of MS Word is to often reduce the resolution of raster images that the author inserts into a MS Word document. However, the '.zip' workaround delivers all there is to deliver. I must experiment to find out if copying raster images out of .docx files opened with TextEdit results in the same resolution reduction that MS Word delivers. That would be much easier than the '.zip' workaround. .docx files
Thanks to those who responded to my earlier query. There are a number of solutions but I settled on a MS patch which docx finds in Version Tracker. It installs in Office2004 and is straightforward and automatic thereafter. The .docx file is converted to an .rtf retaining some but not all of the original formatting and prettyings. Why is MS so hell bent on making life difficult for even other Windows users, apparently .docx is the default format for Word2007 under Vista and is not back compatible at all. Another triumph, Bill! yes Peter is right i'm using neooffice for the last 7 month it works. i can't confirm 100% compatibility with micro$oft office, there are some minor export/import issues it is a 100meg download afterwards the updates are just a few megs most important it's donationware if you decide just to use it it work to it's full extend no caveats if you prefere to work on X11 you may look for openoffice James Also look at NeoOffice http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/ index.php.
