Re: Google Maps Street View

2008-08-06 Thread Barb Zahari
The satellite images of Perth, at least in my area, are over 5 years
old - I can tell from my own backyard.
I moved here Jan 30 2003 a month or so later enclosed half the
backyard for my cats - the satellite photo shows no enclosure, so must
be prior to March 2003.

Street view of my place is definitely taken sometime after the
beginning of 2007, likely summer (either 2007 or 2007/08) from the
early morning shadows.

Also found there is almost no coverage of the whole Bellarine Peninsula
in Victoria, virtually one main road from Geelong to Torquay only.

And if you look at the Melbourne suburb of Reservoir, where one of my
sons lives, they have covered some roads but not others;
ie his house is near a T junction - the other road is covered, but not
his. I can see the junction of his road the first 2 houses, but not
his house which is the 3rd in the street. Looking at the blue lined
street map of the area, quite a few streets have been missed.

Also found the satellite photos are not always accurate in pinpointing
an address.
My other son lives in London, Google Maps marks his place a whole
block away from its actual location - I've stayed there 3 times know
the various features of the area, so can pick out the actual corner
it's on.

SInce google doesn't own the satellites and they obtain the sat and
airial images from a third party only when they are published at
various intervals, at this point, there should be no expectation that
there is any relationship between the dates of the sat/ airial images
and those street level images collected collected by google's own bugs.

What might be interesting in 50 years time or so when google and NASA
etc have amassed sufficient image data, is for google to add a time
slider to google maps and streetview, that would provide a co-
ordinated (in time) view of the planet and streets so we could begin
(the nearest thing to) time travel!!!

Yeah, never had any expectation that there would be any correlation between
the street and satellite images.

An indication of the dates applicable to the particular images would however
be nice shouldn't be too hard.

Ie is the satellite image I'm looking at 1 month, 6 month, 1 year, 5 year
old? (Similar for the street view)

Yes, brilliant. These are quite historic pictures in my case, taken

Street view for Australia went live this morning.

maps.google.com

search for a location eg house address and click on Street View.

It seems to have been quite a cloudy day when they took the pics

driveway, my neighbour cutting the lawn edges and the top of the
camera car.

Hello Alastair,

There have been problems reported with Google Maps and Safari 1.3.2.
Seems Google has changed/upgraded its web code.
The only work-arounds at the moment are use another Browser such as
Firefox for the Maps, or upgrade to Tiger or Leopard.

As software code continues to evolve, Safari 1.3.2 is becoming more
dated. Instances such as these in Safari 1.3.2 will become more
frequent in the year ahead, especially as various sites adopt more
advanced code.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Warren Severin,

If you use Google Earth v4.3.7, you can get Street View of an Address.
Type in the Address (or if you have addresses in 'My Places').
Go to the Address
and then Under Layers - tick 'Street View' and it will take you to
the address and then you click a camera.

My goodness, my sister who lives in Melbourne was actually home on
this day which is unusual

I was out at my Address which is unusual ;-)

Cheers,
Ronni
