Re: I PHONE 3GS
Hi Martin You have to take a 2 year ATT US contract to get it at that price. If you read the bottom of the buy now page you'll see the follow:- ---quote Requires new two-year ATT wireless service contract, sold separately to qualified customers; credit check required; must be 18 or older. Existing ATT customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G should check with ATT or use www.apple.com/iphone/buy to find out if they are eligible for early upgrade pricing: $299 (8GB), $399 (16GB), or $499 (32GB) with a new two-year contract. --end quote. Hi Reg I can't advise I'm afraid. It's really one of those personal preference things. You've got to weigh up which things each company offers you and their plans and see what things you want and what suits you for the price. Personally, I use Vodafone in Perth, but that's because I've been with them since I arrived in Aus and am happy with them. I got what I want for my money and the service isn't bad. Re: I PHONE 3GS
Martin That price ($199) is on a plan with ATT, locked to their network for 24 months. (notice the little superscript 1 after the price? Its very important - reveals details on the required 24 month plan) Furthermore you can't walk out the store with one without being on an ATT plan, unlike the original iPhone, so buying one and jailbreaking then unlocking is not an option. The $879/1040 price is for an unlocked phone which you can use on any network. We're actually *lucky* this time around, as the yanks can't get what we can (unlocked phone). You'll find heaps of forum threads out there about how crap ATT coverage is and that is actually one of the biggest reasons Americans that don't buy them cite for not getting one, as they can't get them to use on any other network (their networks are a hosh-posh of different standards anyway so they'd need an iPhone with WCDMA to be made to use eg Verizon) So sorry, buying one of these in the US for use here is not an option unless your friend is willing to pay for an ATT phone contract he can't use! Re: I PHONE 3GS
Jewels Did you buy it from Telstra(or some other retailer) or from the Apple Store? If from the latter that is definitely the unlocked price so there should *not* be an unlocking charge. If you bought it from anywhere else(vodafone/telstra/optus/other retail phone store) then there could well be an unlocking charge as the stock would have been from the carrier rather than from Apple. I know that $1040 from an Apple store is definitely the unlocked as I just purchased one for my mother for use on her optus SIM, which she recently switched to Telstra without incident. It was marked, separate stock from the other iphones and you could only purchase one via credit card so Apple could ensure and audit trail to make sure people aren't reselling them. There have however been some reports on Whirlpool that some people were accidentally getting locked phones because Apple staff were accidentally giving out the wrong stock. Re: I PHONE 3GS
Agree with Daniel, I too am with Vodafone but I can't say I recommend them for rural Australia, especially with the iPhone as the iPhone can't do 900MHz 3G -which is the frequency that every other carrier apart from Telstra are using for extended coverage. A very shrewd move (and parting gift) of Sol before he went home to yankland. My experience of Vodafone in the South West is that Voda have got reasonable coverage in most towns (bunbury, margaret river, augusta, albany), but this rapidly drops off once you head out of the town centre. I certainly wouldn't rely on it if you're consistently out of that sort of range. Reg, why not buy it unlocked outright(off the apple store online, free shipping) then go on a prepaid SIM to see how it goes? If you find it's great you can go on a plan with good data allowance. If not, then you can go with telstra and not have to stay on contract. I can guarantee you that you'll be able to sell the phone for a decent price when you want a new one - my original iPhone(non 3G) is selling for $350+! Telstra Cap Re: I PHONE 3GS
RegTelstra (whilst they are still scoundrels, they do have the best coverage) now have a Cap plan.http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile/plans/3g_nextg_cap_plans.htmlIt seems for $49 a month you get $200 worth of calls (but not data). Add a $10 data pack to that.cheersBlittoOn 14/01/2010, at 9:37 PM, Reg Whitely wrote:Hi DanielSo if I was wanting to buy an iPhone to use in Geraldton, what would you advise?Vodaphone looks like the best of a bad bunch. Re: I PHONE 3GS
Dave, I wish I had known that information before purchasing it from a Telstra shop - guess its a good way for them to make an extra $150. As it was, the phone had to be replaced by Apple as it was not functioning correctly Jewels On 15/01/2010, at 12:14 AM, choy wrote: Jewels Did you buy it from Telstra(or some other retailer) or from the Apple Store?
