Thanks Peter, that appears to be it.
This is a G5 (non intel), so appears an Intel component has been
written in an update.

It will boot into Single User mode with Cmd S - but after using an
exit, it goes back to original behavior.

and its referred site

It's looking, at a superficial level at lest, as though a Clean
Install with Archive may be in order.

A Google search for "csrhidtransitiondriver" may produced further
answers or leads

Thanks Peter, with Cmd V I get this:

[... Unix startup messages]
CSRHIDTransitionProcess ... done

Syncing disks ... killing all processes

continuing
done
CPUhalted
(and then it shuts off).

It will boot into Single User mode with Cmd S - but after using an
exit, it goes back to original behavior.

Glenn.

Try starting in Verbose Mode (hold down Cmd-V at startup). You won't
see the standard grey screen with Apple Logo and spinning progress
bar. Instead you will see a scrolling stream of UNIX commands fly by
as the various components and commands are executed. Much of this may
be incomprehensible, but it does give to the chance to see what it
happening when the startup process stops.

I have even had instances where performing this simple step has
actually restored functionality.

So will it start up with the upgrade disk and load up to the Instal
page ?

Might need to try holding the C key ... hmmm might be a DVD but I
suspect it may
still be the C key ... immediately after you turn on the
power .

Alternately , power on and hold down the Option key .. should show
you what choices

to start with , arrow to the DVD etc

At the Instal page use the drop down menu to find Disk utility and run
Repair Permissions

Good luck

Bob

MacBook Pro startup problem

2008-09-05 Thread Glenn Nicholas
My MacBook Pro (running Leopard) won't startup.

Pressing the start button gets the chime, then the spinning icon, then
it just shuts down again.
Using shift after the start chime (for safe mode) has no effect, it
just does the same thing.

Any ideas? I have the Leopard disk I used when I upgraded it from
Tiger. But that is a long way back, so if there is a better way to
recover

Glenn.
