Have you check that you have the latest firmware version on the D-Link

Make sure you get the correct firmware for your generation D-Link DSL-504T

Neil, I can not put a time to when this started happening, it was way
back and never very frequent, average perhaps every two months at
most. It has never happened when I am working, only when I am away
and the computer is or is not asleep. I have always thought of power
glitches or some glitch at Westnet. It has never been an issue to
worry me.

What I can say is that there was no difference in ADSL2+ connection
speeds between my Siemens 6520 and Netgear DG834G, 9Mbps out of 24Mbps.
The Netgear seems to do better wireless is all.
There was a 1Mbps difference when I stopped using an extension phone
lead from the wall socket to the Router. This needed the ISP end to
reconnect afterwards to get the new higher speed, this was Amcom's
suggestion and it worked.
The Siemens is being the router beside the wall socket then Ethernet
(30Mtrs) to the Netgear being the wireless switch.

I have gotten roughly 18Mbit+ on a number of different modems on iiNet ADSL.
The main cause of speed issues is distance from the exchange (I have a cable
length of 700mtrs from my exchange). With that aside any cable joins cause
issues, so if you have multiple telephone sockets then you might want to get
in the roof and make sure that they are cabled properly. The other problem
is issues with the line which is nothing you can fix.

One thing to note is that PPPoA is *slightly* better performing than PPPoE,
so you may get a marginal speed increase using PPPoA...however this is not
likely to show on your modem connection stats, but show up more in real
world download speeds.

Adam.

Re: ADSL Modem Recommendations?

2004-02-12 Thread Greg Pennefather
We recently had a Swiftel ADSL connected at the office and purchased a
Nectcomm ADSL modem with it. The modem has a 4 port 10/100 hub (or maybe
switch, but I doubt it) incorporated and a USB interface. It cost an extra
$125 including GST and shipping by courier - the single port Ethernet was
only $100. The modem has NAT and DHCP and was extremely easy to set up - I
simply chose one of the preconfigured options, entered our username and
password and away we went.

I have been delighted with the speed and reliability so far (although we've
only been on 2 weeks). There was an outage due to authentication problems
but seeing as we stay connected around the clock it didn't affect us.

And the price is good too - $84 per month for 1.5M/256k with 8GB data and
half a cent per meg excess data. The 512/128 service with 4GB is only $59.
Install was $140 and took 6 days.

Sorry to go on about it but I have been associated with DSL broadband since
it started in Australia and I am impressed with Swiftel's provisioning and
pricing. I ordered on the web site including providing bank account details
for direct debit and was able to track the progress of our installation
including the progress and shipping of my modem order. I can see why they
have 18,000 subscribers and expect it to grow to 30,000 by mid-year.

Oh, and by the way, I'm not associated with the company in any way. In
fact, I'm still a Request Broadband shareholder (until the end of the month
when it gets sold to Powertel). I just wanted to pass on a positive
experience and some advice on the modem.

Cheers

Greg

I can recommend the D-Link ADSL Router DSL-504.

" It is designed to provide a simple, cost-effective and secure ADSL
Internet connection for small to medium sized private Network.
The DSL-504 connects to an Ethernet LAN via four standard 10/100 Mbps
Fast Ethernet interfaces using RJ-45 connectors.
The Router supports transparent bridging and can be used for IP packet
routing over the Internet.
Cost saving features of the Router such as NAT and DHCP improve
administration efficiency and network security".

It is just so easy to set-up & connect.
I have my Airport Extreme Base Station connecting to the Internet
through it.

For me two important qualities of my ADSL modem is NAT (network
adress translation: router) and DHCP, both these things make life a
little more comfy.

Steer clear of usb modems if possible.

Also, by using an ethernet based ADSL modem you sidestep all sorts of
potential driver nasties. This was discussed just a little while ago.

I am assuming that ethernet is better than USB. Is this correct?

Yes. USB is designed for low bandwidth peripherals like keyboards and
mice (despite what Intel's marketing people tell you), Ethernet is
designed for networking.

ADSL Modem Recommendations?

2004-02-09 Thread Adam Lippiatt
Hello

I have had a brief look through the archives, but a word search does not show
up anything relevant. In the interests of making a comparison with the
price/performance of the ADSL modem provided with an iinet broadband
connection, I was wondering whether there was a clear recommendation for a
quality ADSL modem suitable for a G4 running Panther.

I am assuming that ethernet is better than USB. Is this correct?

Thanks

Adam Lippiatt

Don't get a D-Link DSL 200. I was supplied this by Eftel and am
replacing it because it does not support OS 8.6 and OS 9. It works with
OS 10.2 OK. If you're interested I'll let you know if the replacement
I've ordered through Eftel works.

I figure an ethernet version is the way to go - it will be running on
a 7200/120 with IPNetRouter (OS 9.1) and IPNetSentry.

Fruit might be nice - VPN, maybe wireless...

All input welcome!

Cheers, Antony.
