Re: Thoughts on membership

2012-06-30 Thread Wendy S Austin

I have been pondering the comments from Peter and Eugene and their reasons for
not being able to pay the $30.00 membership fee. I feel the need to say I was
rather disappointed in some of the responses to those comments, and refer to
the comment below. It is not for us to judge what is or is not a significant
amount of money to someone else.It is also not very wise to be as
simplistic as the comment below, about such things. It might work out to 58
cents a week but thrown on top of other expenses people have, $30.00 cannot
always be found.I had a young school girl knock on my door last week, fund
raising for something, and when I told her I did not want to participate she
told me it was just the price of a cup of coffee after all. How patronising!
She was given a rather stern talking to and sent on her way.

Please don't respond to people's honest expressions of why they cannot meet the
$30.00 cost in such patronising ways, it really does demean you.

Kind regards

Wendy

Re: Thoughts on membership

2012-06-30 Thread cm
Hi Rosemary,

That's a point well made and we will take it to heart. Thank you for bringing
that up. I think that for the coming year and possibly for the remainder of
this year we should look at pensioner, student, and family subscriptions.

I will repeat a passage from an earlier email that may have been lost in the
traffic of the past 24 hours:

The second solution I would like to offer is that at the next committee
meeting we will discuss some bursaries for members who really cannot afford
to pay the membership fee. This would be entirely confidential between the
prospective member and WAMUG. If the committee is in agreement you will see a
mail out on this subject after the next committee meeting on July 17 and our
website will be updated to reflect this.

Best regards,
Carlo

Re: Thoughts on membership

2012-06-30 Thread Michael Hawkins
I apologise for any offence, it was not intended as a slight. However, someone
pays for the server or the ISP fee for the access to the Internet that is a
necessary cost of making discussion between WAMUG members available to all.
Each of us makes a decision from time to time whether to spend money on A or B,
whether to buy brand X or go without. And each of us decides, consciously or
otherwise, to put the time and effort that is necessary to keep something like
WAMUG going.

All the committee did was decide that the cost of providing a service which
enables users to post a question seeking advice, or to give advice, or indeed
to post at all, could be recovered in part or in whole by setting a fee for
membership.

It is important to note that anyone, whether a member of WAMUG or not, can read
whatever is posted and thus accumulate knowledge, free of charge. This is a
privilege, not a right, and any complaint is unwarranted. I am not saying that
whom ever it was who posted a message to the effect that they could not afford
to pay $30 a year was complaining - I cannot remember what was written - and I
am not a committee member, nor have I been.

Michael Hawkins.

Hi Sev,

Coming from you, a longtime and esteemed member of WAMUG, the comments are
truly appreciated, and your contributions to the list are always welcomed. You
are too much of a gentleman to name any one person, but we know that Ronni has
been particularly determined to solve a number of the more knotty problems. The
rest of us are happy to contribute to you Mac's well being as well in any way
we can.

We look forward to the day when you can make it too a meeting.

I have no recall of when I found WAMUG, but a good few years ago I am sure.
The $30? Worth it. And the sheer persistence in solving problems on the part
of Ronni and others giving advice is a breath of fresh air in this greedy
litigious society we live in.
The advice wears off on others and I helping someone today by passing on
advice from a WAMUG guru..!

the air and a huge effort from those dedicated souls who put in
the work to make it happen. Our contributions benefit us all.
I name no names but thank you all, committee, workers, expert
advisers and query answerers, you know who I am talking about!
I hope that one day, sometime, I may eventually attend a meeting,
it is a long drive from Albany!
 Good wishes to all
 Severin Crisp
