Re: Can't download Pdf files from Safari

2009-06-18 Thread Pat
I have discovered a down side to opening PDFs with Safari, as opposed
to Adobe Reader (at least, it is a down side in my opinion).

That is, with Adobe Reader, I can highlight, copy and paste text from
PDFs directly into other apps, such as Mail. Using Safari, the copied
text has to be pasted into TextEdit first, then copied again in order
to paste into Mail.

Are you using Adobe Reader or Acrobat as the engine for seeing PDF's
in Safari. If so, it's usual for the screen to appear black while
the entire PDF loads.
When fully loaded the PDF ought to appear. By contrast, viewing via
Apple's Preview within Safari creates a grey screen with a progress
loading bar.
Same situation as Adobe, i.e. the PDF does not appear until fully
loaded,

In regard to the blank Black page you are experiencing ... Remove
the plugin Adobe in the HD /library/InternetPlugins to your desktop.

See if you can view a PDF correctly then in Safari.
If so you can trash the plugin, if not you can place it back in the
Internet Plugins.

Try this:

Go to /Library/Internet Plug-ins (that's the one at the main level of
your hard drive, not your home folder) and create a new folder. I've
called mine Not used. Locate the Adobe plugin and move it to your
new folder.

Re-launch Safari, and see what happens when you try to open a PDF. It
should open nice and clean.

I stand to be corrected regards version numbers, but from memory
Safari has has a built-in PDF reader since 2.0. I certainly abandoned
the Adobe plugin years ago. The Safari reader has little to no visible
interface (except for a minimal translucent toolbar in 3.x), but most
of what you want is achievable via the contextual menu.

2009-06-16 Thread James Devenish
Hi Dick,

When I go to webpages with a .pdf, all I get is a blank (black) page.
I think this might have arisen when I upgraded to OS 10.4.11 and I have
also upgraded to Safari 3.0.4 and Adobe Reader 9.1.2.

If you need to see the PDFs on website, you can control-click on each
links, which will display a popup menu, from which you choose
'Download Linked File'. Then you can double-click the files to open
them in Adobe Reader or Preview.

Regarding the problem with Safari, the current version of Safari 3 is
3.2.3, but you say you have the older version 3.0.4. It sounds like an
issue with the Adobe Reader web plug-in, but I don't know
specifically. It is interesting that you get black blank pages instead
of white blank pages -- hopefully this will help someone identify the
solution for you.

Dick,
Are you waiting long enough for the file to download ?

Some of these PDF files are Megabytes long and will not go from
black to file until it is all downloaded .

Using James method above is a better way because you should get the
Download window showing you the download progress .
