Re: Joystick for X-Plane 9

2009-12-09 Thread Ronda Brown

Hey Wendy,

If Time Machine has already backed up the X-Plane folder & you want to delete
it from Time Machine's Backup Disk.

Delete All Instances of a Single File:
To delete every backed up copy of a given file from your Time Machine backup,
follow these steps:
1. In the Finder, navigate to the folder that contains (or once contained) any
version of the file you want to delete; if you’re unsure where it is (or was),
do a Spotlight search.

2. Click the Time Machine Dock icon or choose Enter Time Machine from the Time
Machine menu to show the “time warp” display.

3. Using the arrow buttons or the timeline control on the side of the screen,
navigate to any previous version of the folder that contains the file you want
to delete. Click once to select it.

4. From the pop-up Action menu, choose Delete All Backups of “File Name”. (In
Snow Leopard, you can also Control-click or right-click on the item and choose
Delete All Backups of “File Name” from the contextual menu.)

Time Machine removes from its backup every copy of that file, in that location,
that it ever backed up. (For some files, you may be prompted to enter an
administrator password first.)

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Wendy,

Just go into System Preferences > Time Machine.
Turn Time Machine "Off"
Then click on "Options" button, click the + button and add a folder to the "Do
Not Back Up" list ... navigate to the X-Plane installation directory, select
it, and click "Exclude"
Click "Done" and turn Time Machine back on.

An International Pilot just cannot completely retire from flying it seems ...
Captain Thomas can fly my plane anytime :-)

Cheers,
Ronni

Ha, thanks Ronni. Yes this warning about Time Machine is mentioned on the
XPlane website but nowhere in their instruction manual so I only read it after
I had set the silly thing up. I guess I will have to go in somehow and make
changes to Time Machine as I do not want to back it up. Grrr.

Re: Joystick for X-Plane 9

2009-12-08 Thread Ronda Brown

Greetings Wendy,

I don't have any experience with Joysticks, but as Michael Waldie has
recommended Logitech.
I have heard good reports on Logitech's high-end Flight System G940 hands-on:

What I wanted to warn you about is Time Machine & X-Plane 9.

By default, OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard & Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard & is set to
automatically back up the entire hard drive using Time Machine. This includes a
user’s X-Plane directory. Most users would prefer not to have this backed up,
due to the fact that it demands a significant amount of space (for something
already backed up to DVDs) and generally also comes with a performance hit.

For this reason, it is recommended that users disable Time Machine while
installing X-Plane, then re-enable it after telling it to exclude the X-Plane
directory from its backup. This can be done using the following instructions:

1. Before installing X-Plane, choose System Preferences from the Apple Menu.
2. Click the Time Machine icon.
3. In the window that appears, turn Time Machine off.
4. Install X-Plane according to the previous instructions, noting where it was
installed to.
5. With X-Plane installed, open the Time Machine preferences as before and
click the Options button.
6. Click the + button to add a folder to the “Do not back up” list and select
the X-Plane installation directory.
7. Click the Done button and turn Time Machine back on.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: Joystick for X-Plane 9

2009-12-08 Thread Michael Waldie

Hi Wendy,

I purchased a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick to use with
X-Plane 9. I bought it from JB HiFi, unusually I cannot find my receipt for it
now but I think it was about $45.
It was a while ago that I bought this but I have a link here to x-plane.org
forums and people giving their opinions and the Logitech is good for getting
started. If you are after something a bit more serious, the Saitek controllers
are highly recommended.

Anyway, if you would like to read more details about what other users reckon,
click on this link for the forum:

Regards

Michael

Thank you.
