Morning folks. My brother went out and bought a MacBook Air; as he would a Jeep. The request I posted looking for a MacBook for him is no longer valid. Hi Kevin, a simple solution is to boot a Mac with DVD reader in target mode and connect via firewire to the old G4 as a slave. You can then install the OS onto the G4. Hi Kevin, Information here how to install using Target Disc Mode. You might find it useful Kevin. http://lowendmac.com/misc/06/0710.html http://lowendmac.com/misc/06/0914.html I did read about installing Tiger by just running the OSInstall.mpkg located in /System Installation Packages on the DVD. BUT, I can't find whether this had any complications, as I'm not sure if this would give you a Stable System this way. If I find the document I read, I'll let you know. Re: wanted to buy
Hi again Kevin, I found this Document on one of my External Drives (boy, I need a decent filing system, so I can find stuff) ;-) Installing Tiger without a DVD drive: Use an external DVD drive: That might seem like an obvious solution but many Mac users are wondering whether this is possible. The good news is that it is, with most external DVD drives. Anything modern, self powered, FireWire equipped and using the latest firmware available for it has good chances to do the trick. The difficulty here is that you need to be able to boot from this device. To perform the installation this way, connect the external drive to the Mac, insert the DVD into it and restart your Mac while holding the “Option” key. After a while, your Mac should present you with a list of all the available boot volumes, which includes this external drive — you may need to wait a few minutes until you can click on it but that’s normal. From there on, simply follow the traditional steps and you should be all right. ** Using FireWire Target Disk Mode This installation method relies on the ability of modern Macs to boot into a special mode called “FireWire Target Disk Mode” that causes them to be seen by other computers are simple external FireWire hard drives. It will require that you have a spare Mac with a built-in SuperDrive or Combo drive (anyone knows why they aren’t called ComboDrive, by the way?) to play with. Start by starting the DVD-deprived Mac into FireWire Target Disk Mode, by holding the “T” key down until you see a big FireWire logo dancing on the screen. Then, by using a thick, known-good FireWire cable, connect it to your other Mac and wait until it appears on your Desktop. Finally, insert the Tiger DVD into the computer and restart it. From there on, simply follow the traditional steps. You will be able to select the external Mac in the Installer Window as the destination drive for Mac OS X. Your other volumes should be left intact. ** Cheers, Ronni Hi Kevin, Information here how to install using Target Disc Mode. RE: WANTED to buy: Mini-DVI to VGA adapter
Hi We just bought a few batches of late 2006 MacBooks and Apple have stopped supplying the video adaptor, it is now something you have to buy separately at a cost of I believe around $50! Great because we won't have hundreds of them, but bad because we don't have any! The MacBook Pro's still come with one though to go from DVI to VGA. It only does it in a certain area of my screen and only at certain times. Any ideas? Under OS 9 I sometimes got that affect in an area of the screen that corresponded to the location of a window of another application. Often the app was a 'Faceless Background Application' or just something that was halfway-dead (beta versions were good at doing that). You could either try to identify which of the running processes could be causing that effect, or upgrade to OS X -- which seems to be becoming a 'universal fix' for most OS 9 troubles these days! ;) Back in the old days, I liked Memory Mapper as a tool for getting information about running apps. Seems to be available from both http://homepage.mac.com/soporific/MemMap.html and http://www.jintek.com/memory.html, for some odd reason. It is one of a few things I'd like to see updated for OS X actually (yes I know there is top and Process Viewer, but nothing beats a graphical display for some things.) Ry
Re: Wanted to buy - a machine from the dark side
Me too. My lighting system only obeys a PC (RS232). Many attempts at PC emulation with numerous Macs have failed - apparently it has to be absolutely definitely native RS232. I have an ancient Compaq Aero baby laptop but it won't run Win95. Anyone with an old WinDoze (95+) laptop please email me off list if you want to offload it... please, nothing fancy! Re: Wanted to buy - a machine from the dark side
Most contents insurance does. The problem is proving that it's lightning and not a power surge. If the insurance company proves it is a power surge then Western Power are actually liable and have to pay for the damaged goods. I've heard it can be a bit of a battle getting them to pay up though.
