Re: TextEdit corruption

2014-04-26 Thread Pat
I closed the computer down yesterday, and just restarted it this afternoon.
Tried TextEdit and checked to see if it would replace all, and it does. So,
mysterious episode is over, and still mysterious.

Thanks for the replies, Ronni and Severin.

Cheers,
Pat

Re: TextEdit corruption

2014-04-25 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Pat,

Mavericks hides the user Library folder (that is, ~/Library) by default, just
as Lion and Mountain Lion did.
You can open it easily enough by holding down Option while choosing Library
from the Finder’s Go menu, but if you find yourself doing this frequently, that
can get to be a hassle.

Mavericks introduces an easier way to make the user Library folder visible all
the time—no more fiddling in Terminal.
All you need to do is open your home folder in its own window, choose View >
Show View Options, and select the Show Library Folder checkbox.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi, Severin,

Thanks for your reply. However, I did look there for it, and looked again just
now, but it just doesn’t seem to be there. I looked in the Library and looked
for Users/pat/Library, but I don’t see that either.

Running Mavericks, 10.9.2.

TextEdit corruption

2014-04-25 Thread Pat
I have been turning text into html. A collegue sends me text in emails. I copy
the text and paste it into TextEdit, then I copy and paste it into an html
editor. He sprinkles his text liberally with ampersand signs, &, which require
coding. To save time and effort, it is my custom to Find ‘&' and Replace All
with ‘and’ on the TextEdit page.

I hit some unknown 2-key combination accidentally, and all the text was
highlighted in a brilliant yellow colour. I clicked that away, but ever since,
the Find and Replace All does not work.

Is there some way to restore TextEdit to its former glory? In the old days,
there was usually an easily accessible .plist that could be thrown out, but I
couldn’t find one.

Hopefully,
Pat

Not a major problem, but when I select a Word file, instead of

To overcome the problem, I 'drag & drop' the file to the MS Word

Is it possible to keep TextEdit but disable it so that I decide
when to use it ?

Thank you for any advice.

Hi John,

Click once on your Word File to highlight it.

Then go to File > Get Info --- Open With: and scroll to select your
MS Word .app

Under 'use this application to open all documents like this'
click 'Change All'.

Cheers,
Ronni

Interesting tip - opening Microsoft Word documents in Textedit!

2003-10-28 Thread David Choy
DId anyone else notice this feature? You can now open Word documents in
Textedit(panther version) (for those that don't know, this is the free
text reader that comes with Mac OS X)

Amazing! Though I haven't fully tested it out yet with complex
formatted docs(eg tables) it works for text and retains formatting.

Re: TextEdit

2003-06-27 Thread Shay Telfer

I have recently moved from OS9 to OSX.

When I open my old MS 2001 Word files they open as TextEdit files. Even
files I open in word and save still open in TextEdit.

Is there any way I can set preferences for MS Word to automatically open any
text or .doc files?

Get Info on a .doc file and then under 'Open With' choose MS Word and
click the 'Change All' button.

Have fun,
