Re: Time Machine/Time Capsule problem
Ronni, Tried Factory re-set again and after night (and day's rest) again, but no joy. I think it's had it . Noticed the first backup was August 2009..so on the 3 yearly had it cycle it about done! I've re-connected my old Airport express, and that's working but it's another story. If the amber light stays solid and does not change to blinking after 25-30 seconds, and you have tried the Factory Default Reset a few times, then I'm afraid that there is an internal electrical problem with the TC and you will need to get in touch with Apple to let them have a look. You’ll have to redo this process on each Mac that the drive is connected to. If a drive is removed from the privacy list, it will automatically start a rebuild of the Spotlight index for that volume, however. If that doesn't help, note the time one of these backups starts, then use the Console app (in your Applications/Utilities folder) to see if there are other messages indicating a conflict with your backups. When it starts, click Show Log List in the toolbar, then navigate in the sidebar that opens up to your system.log and select it. Navigate to the Starting standard backup message that you noted above, then see what follows that might indicate some sort of error, failure, termination, exit, etc. (many of the messages there are info for developers, etc.). If in doubt post (a reasonable amount of) the log here. If you haven't had a problem since excluding it from Spotlight, that was likely the problem. Just why it conflicts with TM so badly for a few users, but not most of us, is a mystery. Since you had to force power-off, yes, you'll get the UUID problem and TM will do a deep traversal. There's no way around that: it's the only way TM can be sure that all the changes made since your last backup will be saved this time. It will take a long time to do the first backup after not being able to backup for so long. Post back how you get on please. Hi Rosemary, Yes I remember the last time you had a problem with Time Machine Backups on your Time Capsule, I mentioned you were very close to the limit of space required for TM to backup successfully. Time Machine requires enough free space on the drive—add up the space currently used on each of your computers and multiply the sum by 1.5 (I recommend by 2) to find the minimum amount of storage space you will need. You will get to the stage where Time Machine won't be able to delete enough backups to make room for a new one. And you will start getting the message Time Machine could not complete the backup. I have a 1TB Time Capsule backing up just my MBP and I'm waiting for the 3TB TC to come down in price. You are using alternative backups as well aren't you, such as bootable backups of both machines? Never just rely on Time Machine for your backups.
