Ronni,
Tried Factory re-set again and after night (and day's rest) again, but no joy.
I think it's had it . Noticed the first backup was August 2009..so on the 3
yearly had it cycle it about done!

I've re-connected my old Airport express, and that's working but it's another
story.

'choked'... Are both Macs trying to back up at the same time?

Seems to me that you are loosing connection, not getting an IP address. You
need to check all the Network settings, on your Modem and Time Capsule, and on
both Macs, something is not right.

required for TM to backup successfully.

Time Machine requires enough free space on the drive—add up the space
currently used on each of your computers and multiply the sum by 1.5 (I
recommend by 2) to find the minimum amount of storage space you will need.

You will get to the stage where Time Machine won't be able to delete
enough backups to make room for a new one.
And you will start getting the message Time Machine could not complete
 the backup.

I have a 1TB Time Capsule backing up just my MBP and I'm waiting for the
3TB TC to come down in price.

You are using alternative backups as well aren't you, such as bootable

Never just rely on Time Machine for your backups.

This is not an error message. This simply indicates that what's on your
internal HD may not match the hidden File System Event Database that OSX
keeps on each disk, and TM normally uses to see what's been changed since
the last backup and needs to be copied. Since it is untrustable, TM must
examine every directory (folder) on your system, and compare it to your
backups, instead. This is, of course, a lengthy procedure.

NOTE: This is usually caused by an improper shutdown, but can be the
result of other things, too. And once it occurs, the whole process must be
repeated for each unsuccessful backup attempt until one completes normally.
So, if at all possible, let it run.

The default behaviour for Spotlight is to start indexing any drive as
soon as it’s connected to a Mac, a task that can take a very long time with

Time Machine volumes, you don’t necessarily want it indexed by Spotlight.
This is particularly true if the drive gets used on multiple machines,
where indexing on each Mac isn’t necessary.

The solution is simple enough, the same method used to exclude

For this kind of process I 'm not sure how to connect a new drive to our
 system.
If we were to get anoter hard drive At the moment we have a Netcom modem
into which the Time Capsule Is plugged and that provides our wireless.
We backup our MBpros to the Time Capsule.
If we got another drive to backup one of the computers to, where would it
plugin? Into he TC or the modem?
Also I would not like to lose the copy of the TC's backup for which ever
computer backs up to the new drive. How do I move the old backups.? And how
do I safely then delete it from the TC.

To answer your other question, yes we have bootable backups ( Superduper
for mine and Carbon Cloner for my husband as Superduper just refused to
backup his computer one day. )
And we have some stuff backed up to Crashplan, and my husband backs his
documents up at the uni as he's doing a PhD and had his computer stolen and
lost a whole lot of work, and is a bit paranoid about losing it again.

 Cheers

 1. Connect the volume you want excluded to the Mac, even if Spotlight is

 2. Launch “System Preferences” and click on “Spotlight” followed by the

 3. Drag the drives icon into the Privacy window

Even if the drive is currently being indexed by Spotlight, this will cease

 That was the unexpected error.

You may have already done this...but your post did not indicate whether

So first thing to do (if you have not) is:

 A) Complete power cycle of the entire network

 1. Power everything down in any order you want
 2. Wait a minute
 3. Start the modem first, and let it run a minute or two
 4. Router (Time Capsule) next the same way
 5. Continue starting devices one at a time about a minute apart

Did you completely reset the connection path in Time Machine Preferences
to point your Mac at the Time Capsule disk?
  If not:
 1. Click the Time Machine clock icon at the top of the Mac's screen
 2. Click Open Time Machine Preferences
 3. Click Select Disk

Now in the top bar, it says

Then in the select disk , the time machine appears Data on mynameforTC
When I select the item use back disk, it asks for password, and then just

At the same time the item for the TC in Finder, just has connecting, then
connection failed.
If I try connection in Finder

Check the server name or IP address, and try again.
I tried using Airport 6.1
It sees the Time Machine/Time Capsule, asks for a password and just sits
there with a red 1 alongside, getting configuration forever. It's not
the password, because when I put in an incorrect one on purpose, it sits
there,
when I put in the correct one it disappears and keeps getting
configuration.
I downloaded the earlier version of the software, 5.6 but it says it's
looking for firmware, accepts the password, but keeps searching for latest
firmware 7.6.1 which it also can't find.
If I miss that step, it also gets stuck at getting configuration
forever whether
I use manual or next
No sign of it in Disk Utilty.

Re: Time Machine/Time Capsule problem

Hi Rosemary,

  An unexpected error occurred
error code -6584, when I tied a Backup Now which just seems to mean
 there's no connection..

(error code -6584) unfortunately won't tell you much that you do not already
knowthe connection attempt failed.
That was the unexpected error.

You may have already done this...but your post did not indicate whether you had.

Did you completely reset the connection path in Time Machine Preferences to
point your Mac at the Time Capsule disk?
 If not:
1. Click the Time Machine clock icon at the top of the Mac's screen
2. Click Open Time Machine Preferences
3. Click Select Disk
4. Click your Time Capsule to highlight it
5. Click Use Backup Disk
-
 Disk not configured

Is that the complete message or is it:
Red i message: Time Machine could not be configured. The built-in network
interface could not be found?

1. From the Finder's Go menu go to this location:
 /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/

2. Copy the file NetworkInterfaces.plist to the desktop (to make a
precautionary backup).

3. Delete the file NetworkInterfaces.plist. Enter administrator name and
password if prompted.

4. Restart your Mac.

5. Once restarted, reconfigure your Network and Time Machine preference panes
in System Preferences.

6. Check that your Network is working ok and you are online.

7. See if you can select your TM backup disk and do a backup.

Cheers,
Ronni

 Ronda,
I couldn't follow the instructions on the previous emails because the

Now in the top bar, it says

Then in the select disk , the time machine appears Data on mynameforTC
When I select the item use back disk, it asks for password, and then just
hangs on connecting. the password is correct, in Keychain. Finally just
comes back to the password box.
At the same time the item for the TC in Finder, just has connecting, then
 connection failed.
If I try connection in Finder
 I get
