Re: Western Digital 1TB drive
Good afternoon Jon and all, Very much like Daniel I have been using WD drives for many years and currently have 10 of them giving me no troubles at all, 2 internal drives and the rest external. However, late last year I purchased a 750Gb WD external with USB FW interfaces and the drive gave me trouble from the very start in that it would sometime mount and at other times there was nothing I could do to mount it. Result was that I could not reformat using Disk Utility, and returned it back. And 3 weeks ago a small 500GB drive, also a WD with FW USB, did the very same thing and was promptly returned to the shop. Must add that for both of those 'faulty' drives I tried both USB and FW with no luck. I am not sure of where the problem lies because in the past 3 years I have been helping friends and family set up their external drives, all being WD which I did recommend they purchase, without any problems. The last one I formatted and set up was a 2 TB triple interface WD, a really good drive. I think that if the drive can be mounted and you can reformat as Daniel advised, then it should not cause any problems, however I tend to suspect something is wrong with it. Good luck, Philippe 2010/7/24 Daniel Kerr wa...@macwizardry.com.au Hi Jon I've also used (and installed) lots of Western Digital drives and they all work well. (Probably close to over a hundred drives easily over the last 2-3 years) And I also use about 7+ Western Digital drives here. All work well. I would try formatting it in Disk Utility and see how it goes. If still the same you can try a zero all data/low level format will sometimes wipe out any bad sectors as well. (Just takes a while). 2. You could try downloading them manually from here http://support.apple.com/downloads/ and then see which ones install and which ones stop. You may then have to remove it from /Receipts and work out which (and why) one is stopping. Hope that helps. Re: Western Digital 1TB drive
Hi Daniel Jon, This is the same machine that Jon has had problems with before. Back on 19-03-2010 Subject: Emptying Trash, When he messed up deleting files from Time Machine backup drive it was thereby corrupted. His second question then was: 2. I can't seem to do an update to the software, say to 10.5.8. Software Update just sticks and does nothing. Then in May 18-05-2010 Subject: Locked volume, when Jon said: I recently inserted a 232 Gb drive from my old G5, into my Mac Pro. It mounts on the desktop okay but it has a visible padlock on the drive icon. It will not open as I '...do not have sufficient privileges' I have also tried to change the privilege settings via 'Get Info' to no avail. I don't think the problem is with the 1TB Western Digital drive, like you I have used WD Drives and recommended installed for many clients, all have worked perfectly. One thing I would suggest is Jon attach the WD Drive to the MacPro and then check his Trash to see if the 418.19GB shows in the trash, if so 'Empty The Trash' BEFORE he disconnects the WD Drive. Whatever the outcome, the WD Drive needs to be erased and partitioned correctly in Disk Utility as you have mentioned before. I feel he probably requires either an 'Erase Install' (but I doubt he has a good backup) or someone … perhaps you Daniel ;-) to have a good look at his machine. Re: Western Digital 1TB drive
the WD drives have a nasty feature called sleep that's what they like to do, if there is no acces within a few minutes after the last access then the drive goes to sleep depending on the firewire setup you may not be able to wake it up i have 2 WD books which behave in that way, but if its at sleep i click onto a file in it (window opened before sleep) then it takes approx 10s to get a response, if i'm correct the included software should be able to change the sleep settings, i don't dare to install the wd software on a allready partially filled drive, so i'm not sure if that works James On 24/07/2010, at 11:32, Jon Davison wrote: Hi everyone.
