Re: tomtom for iphone

2009-09-11 Thread Pedro

Hi Genevieve

Thank you, I have had a FANTASTIC day

Yes there is voice control on the TomTom for iPhone (quite a few)

 http://iphone.tomtom.com/en-us/guided-tour.html

I would think twice though before shelling out for a nav app for the
iPhone. The GPS part of the phone does not work very well and will
have to rely
on cell towers for its information. So unless you have a large (and
cheap) data allowance you would be better of with a stand alone GPS
unit.
One saving grace for the TomTom is the car kit, which hasn't been
releases yet, will have a extra GPS chip to help out.

If anyone on the list has a new GPS app I would ask they try it out
with the phone in airplane mode to see if it works

regards

Pedro

Pedro, I have to disagree with you on this one. I don't have the TomTom but do use the Sygic alternative. It, like the TomTom, uses the internal GPS and has proved very accurate. It doesn't use downloaded information from cell towers. As for the voice navigation. The Sygic uses voice direction but does not have a synthesiser to actually pronounce the street names. it gets the signal from the satellites - not from the mob/phone

Re: tomtom for iphone

2009-09-11 Thread Eugene

Hi Pedro,

aeroplane mode shuts down the GPS. See discussion here:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1788268

I used my iPhone as a GPS for navigating in Melbourne every day for a
week. I only have a 5Mb free allowance with my plan and used only a
very small part of it.

My guess is the iPhone does use telephone towers to initially
determine its position by triangulation as it is fairly quick but not
accurate.

Once the satellites are located, they kick in and are much more
accurate.

 Eugene

Re: tomtom for iphone

2009-09-11 Thread Pedro

Hi Eugene

Thanks for that, I didn't realise it turned the GPS off as well.
I also noticed in the discussion it's not much good without the data.

Airplane Mode shuts down all radios in the iPhone. While it's true
that the GPS radio is a receiver only, it's also true that there is
not much utility to the GPS without a data connection to download the
maps on which your location is plotted. Furthermore, Location Services
uses assisted GPS (aGPS), which uses data from assistance server on
the cellular network to speed up localization and compensate if too
few satellites are in view.

Granted, the GPS receiver does function without the assistance part,
and there are apps that store your path, readout your lat/long/alt, etc.

So, I suspect part of the rationale is that even though the GPS radio
is a receiver and does not transmit, it's functionality is pretty
crippled without a data connection, so it might as well be shut off.

Also good to see from your use of Sygic it does not use much data.

cheers

Pedro
