Note to Customers of the Mayberry Security Bank
During this time of uncertainty and turmoil in the financial and banking sectors, we here at the Mayberry Security Bank want to reassure our customers that their assests are insured and 100% safe. Thanks to security upgrades recommended by Deputy Barney Glen Ford Fife, the cash drawers and vault are now kept closed.?In addition, Asa is bringing a thermos of coffee with him to work so that he can stay awake most of the time.? Rumors of a proposed buyout by the Bank of Mount Pilot, which appeared in the Mayberry After Midnight column and have been spread by Laura Lee Hobbs at the Dime Store, are completely false. The Mayberry Security Bank is sound financially and is on solid footing --- unless Frank Myers decides to cash in his bond. The White horse
Hey other Mayberry Nuts--As I was watching TAGS the other day, I noticed something the same. It seems to me that the white horse in the episode Divorce, Mountain Style is the same white horse who played Dolly. Does anyone know if they are in fact the same horse? Battle of Mayberry
We are all familiar with how Opie opened a big can of worms when he wrote about the true story of the infamous Battle of Mayberry. I am reading a mystery entitled A Puree of Poison and the premise of the book is exactly what Opie did. The town of Hemlock Falls is getting ready to celebrate the 133rd anniversary of their famous Civil War victory in the Battle of Hemlock Falls. They are having a rededication to the statue of the famous war hero. However someone researched the battle and found that it was a fake and the town of Hemlock Falls actually lost the battle and the war hero actually was killed when someone kicked him in the backside. I can't help but wonder if the author came up with this idea of a story line from watching TAGS. It is quite a coincidence. Horse
Being the horsey-type person that I am, I would say that the white horse and Dolly are one and the same. However, as I have stated before, Dolly is not a she, Dolly is a he playing a she. Like Lassie is not really a she. But, that's showbiz. It's all an illusion, unless you are a trained noticer. And, the proper way to get on a horse is from the left, not the right as Barney did. I got a whole lot too much smarts for that! investments
Ken, I think you're wise to diversify in your investments. I've been approached by a fellow who owns the original Robert E Lee Natural Bridge. He's willing to let us all in on this venture and we can even pick the branch we like best. He says if he's able to sell this bridge, there's another somewhere in New York he might be willing to unload. WMBUTBB Silent Auction
A damp, but still great Mayberry Days this year. We had to move the Silent Auction inside due to the weather, but still had a very successful event, raising $2542 for the Surry Arts Council. Many thanks to everyone who donated items, helped during the auction, and bid on the items. We'll plan to have another auction during next year's festival and hope it is bigger and better than ever! RE: Note to Customers of the Mayberry Security Bank
Dear Mr. Meldrin: In regards to your letter concerning the security at the Mayberry Security Bank, we the concerned citizens of Mayberry were wondering if anyone has addressed the issue of Asa's screw-less gun handle and the fact that he has moldy bullets in his gun cartridge. Not only that but Mrs. McGrudder said no one from the bank even sent her a get-well-card concerning her recent bout with fungus of the knee. Thank you for your prompt attention to these matters. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Now that's a horse of the same color
It was probably the same horse in both roles. There's also a horse named Dolly in an episode of Gomer Pyle - USMC (Goodbye Dolly), and a horse in the Star Trek episode The City on the Edge of Forever -- these also appear to be the same horse. In the Star Trek episode, she (he?) is pulling what looks like the same Dogwood Dairy Farms wagon that was used on TAGS. It's at the beginning of the scene in which Dr. McCoy arrives in town. Gold Shipment
I have heard a rumor that the G-Men are sending a gold shipment through Mayberry on their way to Washington. A gold shipment worth $700 billion. They are sneaking it through the sleepy little village of Mayberry in hopes it can reach Washington by the time the Federal Bailout comes to a final vote. This has to be kept top secret. So Barney will get into his plain clothes and he will deputize Gomer and they will be in charge of it until it reaches the county line. Mayberry Days 2008--Part 1
On Tuesday, Lyle and I arrived in Mt. Airy, NC after a 12 and a half hour drive from IL. We easily found 711 Haymore (where Andy Griffith lived from 1935 - 1944). We pulled into the driveway and made our way inside to the small house. First, as you open the (old) door, there's a dining room to your right (we learned later that this part was actually the front porch when Andy lived there...sometime later it was converted into a dining room). Thirties dining room furniture greeted us as we walked inside. To our left was a small table with a guestbook with visitor's signatures and notations of their stays at the house. In front of us stood a small wall, which had Andy's birth certificate. Interestingly, we discovered that it read that he born on June 4, 1926 and not June 1st. We figured that in those days, perhaps they weren't able to draw up a birth certificate until a few days after the baby's official birth. Also, I should note, as you come into the house, to your left is a picture of Andy's graduating class (May 26, 1944). Being the World War II history buff that I am, I'm going to mention that there were quite a few men in his graduating class and I wondered how many of them went off to war after that. Andy graduated from high school about a week and a half before the D-Day landings in Normandy (June 6, 1944. He was 17 when he graduated and would turn 18 that June 1st. (A side note: I would like to thank the person for telling the story they heard from Andy's best friend, Emmett Forrest, about when they were nine years old, swinging on that rope and Andy fell and hurt his back real badly. This very well could've been the case of why he didn't go to war after high school (like so many others did in those days). I heard from somewhere else that it might've been religious reasons keeping Andy out of the war, but I don't think he was conscienscous objector--especially at a time like WWII. This reason sounds more logical to me as they didn't have the medical advances that they have today back during the Depression). Anyway, below Andy birth certificate was a picture of Andy and his parents from 1966. This was when his parents sold the house on Haymore Street and he moved them to CA so he could be closer to them. Oddly enough, his parents are buried in CA, while Andy moved back to NC--oh well, you don't know where your life will take you sometimes. When you pass the dining room, you enter the *real* inside of the house. To your right, is the living room, decaroted with sixties furniture and old lamps. There is a modern TV with a VCR and DVD player. Next to the TV, hung a fake bird cage with three stuffed birds in it--yep, Opie's birds--Winkin', Blinkin', and Nod. If you turned left, you would walk right into what had been Andy's parents room so long ago. A 40's era chest of drawers stood in from of you, with a mirror on top of it. There was a real, yet old brass bed in there too, along with a full-length mirror. If you turned around went out of that room and down the small hall and turned a sharp right, you'd be in the bathroom, which was also carpeted like the rest of the house (except for the dining room and kitchen). There was dark wood paneling on the walls of the bathroom and then shower curtain went all the way around the bathtub (as if there had been a claw bathtub in the house at one point when Andy had lived there). Next to the bathroom, was the kichen. The cabinet doors were painted white, while the borders were painted a cheerful, old fashioned yellow. These probably had never been updated, but they sure were kept well. If you opened the pantry door, you found '30's style wallpaper with yellow and green flowers. Next to that was a late 50's style stove that was about 40 inches wide and it had a double oven. One oven was skinny than the other. I made Jiffy Pop popcorn on that oven. It was electric and yes, it still worked fine. :) The sink was probably the same as well since Andy had lived there. Off of the kitchen, is another doorway and it leads to Andy's room. Now, if any of you grew up in a small bedroom, think again, because Andy's bedroom while he lived there from ages 9-18 was 8 feet long by 3 and a half feet wide. It was only big enough to barely fit a chest of drawers in there and hardly any room to fit a twin bed. Off of Andy's room, was the back porch (in Andy's time) which now was converted into another bedroom. (I do have a story about Andy's house from when he lived there). I was listening to these elderly men talk at Floyd's City Barber Shop while Lyle was getting his haircut and one of them said that when Andy came from the TV Land dedication stature of Andy and Opie in 2002, Andy and Cindi stayed at the house and Andy told the story that one cold night, him and his parents kept themselves warm by sitting around the stove (they must not have had coal heat or radiators or
Thanks Joe.I can count on You.More on Alan Hale and Jeff Pruitt
What was Alan Hale like? every inch the genuine article. Skippers hat and all decked out greeting customers at the Lobster Barrel, outgoing funny, appreciated, full of life. He told me to look him up. I called from my hotel room in L.A,. Is Mr Hale in tonight? Yes he is. Anton i think was the head waiters name. I dashed down, pen paper camera in hand. Hey little Buddy. now where have we fans heard that?Gilligans Island? not really. Jeff Pruitt from Farmer Takes A Wife said it in 1962. i had it on tape in pre vcr dvd player days on audio off my tape recorder 600 tv shows and movies. HE was so kind. he took a vital interest in myself as well asking about me my interests my hobbies. but Im selfish. With pen and paper in hand I was more interested him. Like hearing Alans grave concern that his series Casey Jones in 57 was a flop. it went syndication.he felt had a network picked it up itd be on alot longer. He was embarrassed when i had to say what hes been told to his dying day in 1990m that he was spitting image of his beloved father Alan Sr.He adored Jimmy Cagney. Yes he was proud of Gilligans Island i cant deny it but privately he said he liked it when fans remembered him from other credits and i went down the list.I wish I could send off the photo i took of him posing, hands outstretched as if to say Hello Little Buddy. He said naturally as i asked many other perfortmers about more detailed tidbits of production side, the making of a movie or tv show his love for his father and what love. But i dont think people would be interested in the every day running of a shooting schedule. But there are interesting sidelights. Tina Louise could be difficult. He worshipped Sherwood Schwartz . He sat down 30 minutes at my table. naturally he's got other patrons to visit.he'd go table to table and chat a few minutes. im not special.he gave me 3o wonderful minutes because i had been writing him for 3 years. But what a dear sweet man. They all were. Fritz Feld the wonderful character actor in fims and tv the actor comedian remembered for popping his mouth to our delight in 1972 told me he made 300 films.he loved them all. he said id be on Tonight Show in a few weeks. ill wave to you on the show and do a pop for you. What do you think. sure enough i watched and he said hello Tom. and he did his POP for all. I thought that was so kind.he lived to be 95. His wife Virgina Christine the actress Mrs Olson from coffee comericals told me til the commedrcials came to being fans knew her for only one role. the filthy muddy role in The Mummys Curse in 1945. But she wasnt ashame of it. I knew Fritz from Phantom of the Opera 1943 and i praised him highly on that role. Hope Summers told me in 1975 her admiration for Andy Griffith telling me he had his hand in every facett of the show from conception in 1960 to 1968 the final show. She loved her role as Clara Edwards ,a role like George Cisar and Vincent Barnett and Frances Bavier rolled into Mayberry RFD. the full credit to TAGS was Andy Griffith she said.He had every reason to be proud. He watched over every bit of film she was good friends with James Weathersfield, our beloved Uncle Ollie from Family Visit 1964. She worked with him before in what she termed was the stramgest role of her career, in 1961s Homicidal a sleeper of a ffilm. they were husband and wife. Folks dont ask what happened to Uncle Ollie in this movie. You have to see it to believe it. And get all thoughts of Uncle Ollie out of your head when you see him.Regarding Frances Bavier all I can add and I was wise not to touch upon it in phonecalls to her was Andy Griffith. She preferred never to discuss him nor the co stars but she enjoyed her role and she adored Anita Corsaut as we all did. I did Andy on a show some years ago state she did call him to apologize for the poor relationship they had during the run of the show .This was in her last days this call. Andy ever the gentleman asked if he could see her but due to her health she declined. he offered any help he could but she kindly refused. in her defence because i knew her i have to say shes from the old school. . the younger generation of actors from this classic were not on the same plane as her. Where some may think of her as rude and thoughtless i saw as reserved and protective. Once you won her over she took you into her confidence. I knew so much about her career, i sense that might be why she and others felt if i take that much time out for them they can in return respond in kind.Thats it for today until next time i can offer any benefitical insight. thanks from Col Tims friend Tom Kessel ps the typing is better this time.im slowly learning. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
