mayberry days ticket tent

2009-09-29 Thread Larry Hamrick
Our family arrived in Mt. Airy early Fri. morning. I grabbed my granddaughter
by the hand and hurried to the ticket tent to get our tickets. I was already
feeling the Mayberry Mood and wanted to impress her with my Mayberry
knowledge. The lady in the tent was very professional and greeted me with Can
I help you?. So here I go: friend, I don't have a ticket, I don't even know
where it is that I'm a'goin. Well, she looked at me like I was from outer
space. Whether she had never heard the football story or really thought I was
crazy, I'm not sure. Anyway, I explained what I needed and she fixed us up in
short order. It didn't take long to get back into the Mayberry Mood and we
had a great time in spite of the rain. I'm introducing a third generation of
Mayberry citizens, and nothing makes me happier. I always enjoy Mayberry Chapel
on Sunday morning led by Mac McNees, and we met Howard at the Sagebrush
later Sunday. I can't wait 'til next year!

WBMUTBB Silent Auction - Thanks!

2009-09-29 Thread Jeff Koontz
We had another successful auction during Mayberry Days and raised $1866.50 on a
soggy Saturday morning. Thank you to everyone who donated, bid, and helped out.
A special thanks to Harriet Browder for jumping in to answer questions and keep
the bids going until the end and to Dewey Lamb for creating some of the best
items we've had in the 10 years of having our chapter service project. We have
items for next year already waiting to go, so plan now for next year!

Karen Knotts show

2009-09-29 Thread colonialcott...@netzero.net
Did anyone attend the Karen Knotts show at Mayberry Days? I am just wondering
what her show is like. Didn't get to go to Mayberry Days. (Only been there
once. I wasn't sick as a dog, but I had the time of my life.) I would go
every year if I wasn't self-employed, and having four horses, two dogs, and two
cats to worry about. My husband and I loved it when we went in '04 and got to
see Andy himself. Big ain't the word for it.

Saturday at Mayberry- Holland

2009-09-29 Thread Holland Shoaf

My friend Mike and I had a wonderful time at Mayberry Days this Saturday. The
threat of weather was lingering but the rain didnt bother a soul until about
1:30 pm Id guess. So many outdoor pictures were able to be made without the
rain until then.

Mike hadnt been to Mayberry Days in years, many years and he was just amazed at
the love for TAGS shown there.

I go often but still fit right in with his enjoyment. 2 kids in a candy store !

We left Lexington at 830 AM and had my car parked at the end of town at 920am.
The front of the parade had just made it at the corner where they turn off main
street.

Picture TIME !

There was a photographer for the Surry Arts Council taking the pro shots for
their site. He said he will post them at the Surry Arts Council Page soon.
While he was there stopping traffic for his pro pics, our picture opportunity
was being made. I only had a point and shoot digital but so did everyone else.

The highlight of my day was when Thelma Lou The REAL Thelma Lou passed by. I
yelled Thelma Lou !! Her driver stopped right in front of me. I took a
picture. Thelma blew me a kiss !! I yelled Barney messed up BIG TIME . He
surely did. The greatest catch of the century just went by me too ! I love you
Thelma Lou !

Actors/ess's in the parade were Thelma Lou, Sweet Romena, Charlene Darling,
Lou-Ann Poovie and Jim Lindsey.

Before Mike and I left for the day we joined some of our on kind in the
cinema. The TAGS RERUN Watchers Club meeting.

Don Knotts's Daughter Karen was being interviewed on stage. First time I saw
her. WOW, what a gorgeous gal ! Clips of Barney scenes were shown on the movie
screen and she gave her thoughts on each one. Her favorite ? The one where
Barney had to keep singing lower and lower into that hot microphone ! Then
Barney went on stage to sing and he thought that amazing baritone voice was his
! To think about it, I think thats my favorite scene too ! She said when she
watches the show now she sees Barney, not her father. Also interesting thing
she said was ( paraphrasing )when her father watched himself on TV he peered at
as though he was overviewing with the show as his work being evaluated. She
didnt say that exactly but what she said was that he didnt sit back and laugh
at the show like the rest.. I can understand that if I was an actor on the
show. She said the appeal for shows back then were the appeal to the
actor/ess;s character and not the events so much. The writers for TAGS are
genius's . Its said that writers can write and have the actors fill the part
but for a writer to write FOR the actors character was much harder. This was
the case for TAGS. Lost of questions were being asked to Karen about Don Knotts
the man and not the actor which was really neat.

I wish I could share more but its so much. You had to be there. Chills were on
my arms watching and listening to history.

My picture site www.pbase.com is down now. I have pictures to post but cant
now. Will soon.

Sincerely

Holland

Mayberry Days

2009-09-29 Thread Ctmidway57
I am going to try to read my scribbled notes and give an account of
Mayberry Days, so here goze:

9-24: I awoke at 2:15 AM and never got back to sleep! On top of that,
instead of taking one of my Lyrica capsules I took 2, and that causes
drowsiness but I had a full power Dr. Pepper and the caffeine kept me awake
for the
3 hour trip. I awoke Carol at 6 and finished packing the car, and after a
light breakfast got under way just after 7:30.
We made a stop at Mebane NC for gas which was 10c a gallon cheaper than
Raleigh, then make another stop at the Greensboro rest area before going on
into Mt. Airy at 10:25. Of course, the first stop was at Snappy Lunch for
our annual pork chop sandwich and merciful goodness, what a sandwich that
was! It was hanging out all around the bun but I soon took care of the
overhang and got down to serious business! As soon as we finished that, we
made
our way up to Mayberry on Main and what a nice roomy store they have now! My,
goodness!! And Darryl, Debbie and Samantha make you feel so at home with
their friendliness and smiles it is a real treat to go in their store!
Then of course we checked out the Consignment shop, Emporium at Oak, and
other stores as we made our way back to the car, stopping at the PO for my
postmarks. I got out my donations for the silent auction and dropped them
off at the Surry Arts office, then into the new Andy Griffith Museum which
had been open 2 days and what a thrill it was to see all the artifacts in
such a beautiful setting!
After viewing the museum, we made our way back to the Emporium for some ice
cream and walked thru the rest of the store.
We decided then to head to the hotel an check in but first, we had to stop
at the Goodwill store! Never pass up a good thrift shop! Then to the hotel!
How nice...we got upgraded to the new section with microwave and
refrigerator...a very comfortable room! After getting the luggage in and
unpacked it
was time for a short nap. After baths we went down to the hospitality room
for a while before turning in for the night.
9-26: Got up at 6, got ready to head out but stopped at Biscuitville for
some breakfast and headed downtown about 8:30. We checked out a few stores
before heading to the opening ceremonies at the amphitheater. No rain
falling yet but forecastagain! Seems like we did this last year! Opening
was
great as usual with David Browning serving as MC - Master of Confusion -
oh...sorry, that's Master of Ceremonies! What a great job you do, David and
it is a pleasure to know you!
Afterwards, we made the rounds of town again before going to the theater
for TAGS videos with the star of the show to answer questions. Spitting a
little rain but not too bad. This time at the theater we had LeRoy McNees,
George Spence, James Best and Jackie Joseph. As soon as that was over we were
SUPPOSED to go to the amphitheater for the trivia contest and internet
group photo, but my stomach overrode my brain and we went to eat, but I did
remember it at 5:30 when we were too far away to get back in time for the
photo. Gotta start making a note to me of what I am to do and when! So, I
went
back to Mayberry on Main and got me a t-shirt before heading back to hotel
and baths. A little after 9 LeRoy and his friends came in to play and sing
for us until his voice about gave out around 10:50 so we forgave him and
let him go!! He is great and is a great friend, a pleasure to know him and
his wife Janice.
9-26: Up at 6:15. Parking lot is wet but nothing falling as of now. We
left the hotel a little after 7:30 and picked up our biscuits. We rode down
to Main St. and got a parking space on the street where we sat and ate our
breakfast, then got into position to watch the parade. Just a few minutes
before the parade start the rains came, but not really heavy, just enough to
get you kinda soggy if you didn't have a raincoat. But folks, if you are in
front of the line watching the parade, keep your 'brellas down as low as
you can so the folks in back don't get blocked! It was a great parade with a
couple of new little Opies in it, and guess we will have to get a new one
as Jamie is soon going off to college! Can you believe that?? The parade
moved very slow this year but made it easier to get photos of the ones you
wanted.
When the parade was over we walked to the playhouse and found the Silent
Auction had been moved inside because of the rain. Our donated items brought
$41 for the Arts Council and every little bit helps! While the auction was
going on the ceremonies preceding the ribbon cutting for the museum were
taking place in the theater with all the stars present. At the given moment,
Emmett Forrest used a huge pair of scissors...and I do mean huge...you
could'a mowed your lawn with them things ...to cut the ribbon and officially
open the museum to the public. What a thrill to be a part of that!

Mayberry Days Silent Auction

2009-09-29 Thread Harriet Browder

You can't ruin the spirit of Mayberry with any Mafia rain..Thanks, Jeff.
Glad to help. The Silent Auction is a wonderful way to meet other Digest folks
besides raising funds for the Surry Arts Council, so even if you're not
bidding, stop by and see what's offered. And say hey to whoever you're lucky to
be standing next to! Years ago I donated a Barney Album I made, the kind you
cover with material and decorate? I made Barney's front shirt, complete with
patch on the spine, badge, and bullet in the pocket. It raised a goodly sum,
and I got a request to make another one. See? You never know what might come
from a Maberry Silent Auction. We've got a whole year to get creative. Homemade
items do extremely well. So jump in where you can and hang on

Mayberry days

2009-09-29 Thread Victor Friskey

I'm back home from Mayberry !!!

What a great time . You know I've been every where from the top of Sears Tower
to the bottom of the Grand canyon and I have never had such a fun loving
enjoyable vacation as I had at my first Mayberry days. The people are just the
kindest sweetest most accommodating class I have ever met. It was BIG !!
Thank you Allen, Jim, and the Surry Arts Council you guys did a terrific job.
Everything was so organized and relaxing. I got to meet Maggie Petersen, Ohh
What a wonderful, beautiful lady she is. I got a picture with her and me on the
truck, gave her a big hug and kissed her on the cheek. Am I in love?  And David
Browning, man what a class act. He is Just the greatest. I had my picture taken
with all the tribute actors EXCEPT FLOYD. Where was Floyd ? Every time I saw
him he was surrounded by people or on a stage conducting business.
The shows were great, Charlene sang 'Salty Dog' and the Dillard Band was top
knotch as was Karen Knotts. She never focused on herself but always on her
great father and actor Don. I am so excited to have been there. Just under 800
miles in 13 hours and worth every rain drop. And speaking of raindrops. It was
sprinkling Saturday morning about 8:30 and just before the parade started it
stopped raining and we didn't get any more rain until the parade was over. Do
you think those great Mayberrians in the sky might have had something to do
with that. What a great weekend Thanks again to all of you responsible for this
celebration. But I have only one question WHERE IS FLOYD.
God Bless all

Lets See What was on Tvland Tonight Folks

2009-09-29 Thread tom kessel
first up on monday nights marathon is Crime Free Mayberry. Did you all know
the very last scene of Andy Griffith laughing out loud at Barney , a three
quarter profile is not only fantastic, showing AG as himself but that shot
frozen was used a number of times in Tv Guide for adveritizing the show.Jeff
Pruitt in Farmer Takes a Wife says little buddy Hales famous quote for
years, for the first time HERE.Tvland edited out the famed scene of Andy
Griffith's dad coming out on the street. So what else is new? Perfect Lady
disturbs me because i dont like the idea of any woman getting the best of
Andy Taylor.Andy wasnt being mean for Gail Davis to beat him at skeet
shooting. i always have an uneasy feeling seeing this episode. Its all for
fun but well Gail was a Annie Oakley on tv prior so i guess this was used as
idea for her to show off her shooting skills or did she really have shooting
skills her and other tv western heroesand heroines?TheClubmen was on as was
the classic Pickle Story and Aunt Bees Brief Encounter with Edgar

actor never went anywhere. Thats it folks. One more marathon tomorrow unless
its a repeat of tonight.God Bless. Tom Kessel Col Tims Protege Reject
