Outstanding Single Performances

2014-01-24 Thread John C Simoneaux
Have we ever discussed opinions about which actor on TAGS offered an
outstanding single performance in a specific episode? I can't suggest best
performance because there are too many to choose. Also, if we include the
major players, we would have to say every time Howard McNear/Don Knotts/Ron
Howard/etc. is on the screen. I would be interested in learning your
opinions. To hopefully get this started, I would like to nominate the
following:

Andy Clyde as Frank Myers
Karl Swenson as Mr. McBeevee
Parley Baer as Mayor Roy Stoner (choose your episode -- he's always good)
Dick Elliott as Mayor Pike (again -- choose your episode)
Lureen Tuttle as Annabelle Silby
Reta Shaw as Big Maude Tyler
Mr. Schwamp (he manages to communicate so much with so few (zero) words)

I am sure there are many others that I'm missing (these were off the top of my
head) -- it is very hard to choose. These actors were amazing, and all
deserved Emmy's. Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

Vagrant

2014-01-24 Thread Dan Goodwin
Cheryl is correct about the vagrant (Arthur Malet). He falsely confessed to
stealing Aunt Bee's pin, not purse. It was Mr. Dave (Buddy Ebsen) who
falsely confessed to stealing Aunt Bee's purse. Arthur passed away late
last year.

Ken's trivia and one of my own

2014-01-24 Thread Paul Mulik
I'd forgotten about the epilogue of The Shoplifters, where the little old lady
who ought never to clank manages to get Barney's pistol without his knowledge.
I don't think Ernest T. Bass should count, though.

Now here's a question of my own. Many of you are aware that I am a piano
technician by trade. For this reason, I tend to notice pianos in TV and movies
perhaps more than other folks do. Here's the question: name every character
seen playing the Taylors' piano. I believe there are eight different ones.

Helen and Frank Smith

2014-01-24 Thread Janet Anderson
I always find it odd that he and Helen are sitting on the same side of the
booth when Andy and Goober walk in. Andy mentions it to Helen later and
Helen gets her back up about Andy using the term run with but never
explains why they are sitting on the same side of the booth. Why are they
sitting on the same side? I certainly would want an explanation.

Brenda, I watched that episode not long ago, and I thought the same thing.
Sitting on the same side of the booth implies some intimacy that should not
have been there, and if I were Andy, I wouldn't have liked it, either! Helen
should have recognized that and should have offered an explanation to Andy,
such as, Frank just sat down beside me. What could I do? She was a little
too offended about that, which would seem to indicate, if not guilt on her
part, at least perhaps some unspoken attraction to Frank that she didn't want
to admit.

In some of the TAGS storylines, it's apparent that the writers have had the
characters do or say things that aren't necessarily logical or even true to
themselves for the purpose of creating a conflict that will drive a story.
There is no story without conflict, but the key is to create believable
conflict. The conflict is this episode was believable except for that one
detail. It's easier to talk to someone when you are face to face, so the only
reason for sitting side by side is for closer physical contact.

I know, I know, I'm probably over analyzing things, but, as Barney would say, I
can't take any credit for it--that's just how my mind works.

designs

2014-01-24 Thread jlj9675
I believe Mr. Smith of the state school board had designs on Helen even tho
she didn't return them. Perhaps once she sat down in the booth, he just slid
on in with her and she didn't want to be rude by demanding he sit on the
opposite side. I would have but I'm mouthy and do not brook any nonsense but
Helen had her moments of gentility and I believe this was one of those. I
think Andy was quite justified in his objections and Mr. Smith needed to be
put in his place!

Big Maude didn't take Barney's gun from him. Naomi took it from Barney and
tossed it to Maude.

Trivia

2014-01-24 Thread DAVID QUINN
Here is a cute trivia question for you that I was thinking of today: Which
person on TAGS said that Andy was stupid? I mean this person called Andy
stupid right to his face. Think you can answer that one?

Orville Hendricks - Mount Pilot Butter and Egg Man. I call myself stupid
sometimes.
