Barney's Replacement

While watching Barney's replacement; when Barney thinks the lawyer has been 
sent to replace him as deputy because Andy is pointing out everything he does 
wrong: I picked up on something. After the siren incident where the siren got 
stuck in the on position; you here Andy tell Bob that the warrant he served 
earlier was served to the wrong person.
Barney doesn't pick up on this either. I have watched this episode at least 
a100 times and this is the first time I've picked up on that background 
conversation. Brilliantly staged by the director I believe.

Thanks for all you do.
Things about TAGS that make me smile.  The fact I have my 9 yr old daughter 
hooked.  I’m not supposed to watch without her, she pauses the show when she 
leaves the room, and laughs out loud at the antics of Barney and the crew.
TAGS is like comfort food for me only not fattening.  It help me get to sleep 
if I am having a rough night. It makes me feel safe as Andy, Opie, Barney, and 
Aunt Bee bring you into their lives and homes. Yes I laugh because Barney and 
Floyd also are so serious and silly at the same time.

Character growth

Think of all the characters that evolved thru out the show. In addition to 
Goober...his cousin Gomer started out as a gas jockey became a master mechanic 
and eventually joined the Marines.  Barney started as Andy's cousin who was 
chosen deputy, and moved on to the big city police department where he was in 
charge of fingerprints than went on to his dream job of being a detective 
though a slightly inept one. Sam the farmer went on to be on the town council 
as did Howard and Ellie the first woman councilman. Andy himself married and 
moved on to the big city.
Can anyone think of any others.

Opie First Grade

It is entirely possible Opie didn't know how to write in the first grade.  I 
started first grade in 1969 in a rural school in Oklahoma and we were just 
learning how to write our letters by tracing the dotted lines in the old chief 
tablets.  Compared to today, my daughter is in 2nd grade and has to write 
comparison contrast sentences about stories they read in school.  They started 
doing algebra in first grade.  Different times.

Andy's little brother

Yeah my youngest is 8 and the oldest is 34, so yes it is possible, but what 
makes it so funny is…..Floyd panicked The logical thing would have been to say 
Opie was his grandson. No one would have thought anything about that it makes 
perfect sense that Floyd would be a grandfather, but the fact he does not do 
well under pressure is what makes the situation so so funny.

The pickle story

Mr. Belvedere movie made. She had a crush on Robert Young.  She is also in

The church organ

Paul I was also always bothered by this. My question has always been...Since 
this was an organ for the church , why wasn't it paid for out of the church 
treasurery?,or as our church does a special collection taken up? Why did it 
become the responsibility of a handful of private citizens to buy the organ.  I 
also agree the men of the church should have gotten together to help build the 
barn.

Town drunk was so beloved that even the local police mourn his death9 hrs ago 


Alvin Cote racked up 843 public drunkenness arrests during his time as a 
homeless alcoholic in Saskatoon, Canada. So by the time he died last month at

Characters single Episode....

This is a hard one, because no one episode hits on all the characters.  But I 
would suggest Season 1 episode;  Ellie Come to Town, or Opies' Charity. Man in 
a Hurry is another I would suggest.  I know what you mean though.  My husband 
and I used The Andy Griffith Show for our Sunday School Class.  Our biggest 
hurdle was that it was in BW and not color, heaven forbid.Another good 
episode, The Runaway Kid.

The title of this particular book is Murder Shoots the Bull by Anne George.  
It's a book in series of books called the Southern Sisters Mysteries.  
 
Paul, I don't know if these are the books you are referring to, but, there is a 
lady named Donna Andrews who writes mysteries set in N. Carolina.  They all 
have references to  birds in the title. Cockatiels at Seven, No Nest for the 
wicket, etc

Barney Fife

I was reading a book by Anne George today.  She is a southern author who writes 
witty mysteries.  On the very first page the two heroines, sisters,  get into 
an altercation with the bank president and one hits him in the head with her 
umbrella, which brings the bank guard in.  The author must be a fan of TAGS, 
because she wrote;  He looked just like Barney Fife, the guard did, and 
chances were the bullet was in his pocket.  And later on wrote,  sister 
probably could have knocked the gun out of the guards hand, if he hadn't of 
looked so pitiful standing there shaking like a leaf.  Only a fan of the show 
could have nailed the description so well.
 
To go back to another topic, the paint.   That was one ugly shade of green.  
Definitely not avacado, and the whole town was painted the same color.  The 
studios must of gone to a paint sale that year and bought in bulk to make 
things more uniform.  I have noticed that they use bits and pieces of known 
sets locations, like the Taylor house in different scenes as someone elses home 
or porch etc  Maybe it was easier if they didn't have to worry about paint 
color.
 
And lastly,  the Taylors must have spent a fortune wallpapering their living 
room.  I've noticed every year or so the wallpaper changes. 
 
Half the fun of watching the show since I've seen every episode a hundred times 
is noticing the little details.  These were just a few of my observations.

Andy's Occupation

What was Andy's occupation before he became sheriff?  Well we know Andy was in 
the Military, We can safely assume that it was during the Korean conflict since 
we know he graduated high school in 1948 and there is no mention of him going 
to college. Then he came home. married, had Opie etc  We don't know exactly 
how long he had been Sheriff when the show started, but we do know that Barney 
wasn't always his deputy. I think perhaps Andy became a deputy when he got out 
of the service.  Because in one episode, I believe it's Citizens' Arrest, they 
talk about the lineage of Sheriffs and how he took over for I think it was Ed 
Paley..? Anyway that's my theory.

Mayberry sighting

Was watching an early episode of Leave it to Beaver today and before there was 
a Gus at the firehouse, there was a Pete.  Played by none other than the 
original Ben Weaver actor.  Guess he didn't always play cranky old men roles.  
On another note, I was planning on buying People magazine this week, mistakinly 
assuming they would have the passing of Andy as their cover story.  He only got 
a blurb in the corner.  Tom and Katie got the cover.  So sad.

Opies Shirt etc...

In regard to Opie wearing the same shirt for each episode;  The Andy Griffith 
Show is not the only show which did this.  We watch Father Knows Best reguarly 
and Bud also wears the same shirt in almost every episode.  Maybe it was a boy 
thing.   They grow so fast you know.  Also if you want to see a large number 
of Andy Griffith alumni Father knows best is the way to do it.  In addition to 
Elinor Donahugh of course just about every episode has at least one person from 
the Andy show.  Buds high school teacher is the woman from Andy the Marriage 
Counselor,  Mayor Stoner plays a Circus manger who visits the Andersons and 
they can't get rid of him.  Anyway there is someone on just about every episode.
On another note I must have watched Opie the Birdman with my daughter too many 
times.  She keeps pretending she's feeding me bugs and worms.

Inconsistencies

While watching season six The return of Barney Fife I got to 
wondering.This episode was centered around the class reunion;  why was 
Thelma Lou invited to this one and not to the first one back during season 2 or 
three I'm not sure which.
Also in season six Aunt Bee wins prizes on a game show.  She sells all of them 
except the garbage disposal and one other item, yet later on 3 or 4 shows she 
buys a garbage disposal with money from an insurance claim when she looses a 
broach.  Why buy something that you already possess and that is brand new?  
Just a couple of things to make you go hmmm..

Thunderstorms

I was watching the episode Quiet Sam and noticed something sort of funny.  
When Aunt Bee says she hates storms, Andy tells her she better get her nerves 
all tucked in because this one tonite is going to be a doozy with 40 mph winds 
and thunder and lighting.   Then half heartedly gets onto Opie for asking if he 
thinks lighting will strike their back yard.  I guess I'm just saying how can 
one thing be any worse than another.  Just an odd bit of dialog there.

a mayberry moment

My husband and I had a mayberry or more accurately a Howard Sprague moment at 
the bowling alley last night.  The lane we were on kept screwing up, so the 
manager moved us over a lane.  Daniel joked with him that he had screwed up his 
perfect game he had going.  The manager told that just a few minutes before one 
of the league bowlers had a perfect game going.  Eleven strikes in a row and 
his lane screwed up.  They fixed his lane but when he threw his final ball he 
only got nine pins.  That would suck wouldn't it?  Makes you wonder what would 
happen if his lane hadn't screwed up.

Shot locals

I have been rewatching season 1 and paid very close attention to backgrounds of 
shots.  In the episode Cyrano Andy if you pay attention to the shots done at 
Thelma Lou's house you will notice something strange.  Both the interior 
shots done in the living room and exterior shots on the porch are done on the 
set of Andy's house.  Never noticed it before.  Also as an aside; I've noticed 
that the wallpaper changes about every season.  The Taylors must have spent a 
fortune on wallpaper hangers.  One final observation,  in the color scenes you 
get to notice the whole town is painted puke green.  Must of been a heck a of a

I also know Don Knotts was in at least one and maybe two of the old original 
Scooby Doo movies from the 70's. A Scooby Doo  the gang meet Don Knotts 
show. I believe am not sure though that he may even have played a cop in one of

characters in other roles

One of my favorite James Best roles is one he plays in In the Heat of the 
Night   He plays a retired officer from probably the 40's who along with a 
raciest sheriff and some other deputies of the time killed a black man for 
driving a car above his station.  Years later the current police department are 
investigating unofficially the death and question him.  He sits everyday in the 
local park reading the bible.  As it turns out, that park used to be woods and 
the black mans body is buried there.  He is keeping watch out of remorse for 
his part in the killing.  It is my favorite, In the Heat of the Night episode.

courthouse windows

I was watching the episode in the 8th season where Andy opens a laundromat and 
noticed something for the first time.  When Andy was was talking to the State 
Police and State Investigator about his reasons for opening the business Opie 
is sitting outside listening.  He was able to hear because the courthouse 
window was up (opened).  Maybe I've just never noticed before, I seem to 
remember that the courthouse windows were one solid sheet of glass in earlier 
episodes.  In this episode there are two small side windows and one large 
window (the one that was pushed up) in the middle.  They were consistent it was 
that way on both sides of the courthouse doors.  Just an observation.
 
Someone else had pointed out that the parking for the sheriffs office was awful 
close to the fire hydrant.  That fire hydrant also came and went.  Often in the 
same episodes.

Bob Rogers did not issue a ticket or even act as if he noticed.
Not a very good example for Andy to set.  True he was distracted ny Barney

Just some observations

Watching season 8 got me to thinking (scary I know)..during the episode 
Church Benefactor  when the women wanted new choir robes and the church had 
to be brought level a couple of things..Didn't $500 seem a bit stiff for 
the choir robes and most of the women sewed.  Why not make the choir 
robes??? Also why did the church not just take up a collection for the robes 
and / or leveling the church off???  In season 6 when the church buys the 
organ.why were just the town businessmen responsible for paying for the 
organ??? Again why was it not expected that the congregation as a whole pay for 
it
In the episode where Barney arranges the summit meeting.  Why if they were 
suppose to meet the next day did he wait until then to go to Mayberry to find 
someplace for them to meet???  Why not leave the day before???
I know picky, picky...it's just a TV show.  If it helps any I do the same thing 
with my daughters Scooby Doo cartoons.  To much time on my hands I think.

Parfumes

I sent this post previously from my phone, but I don't think it got thru anyway 
I didn't see it.  On the episode Opie's Drugstore Job season 8, Opie broke a 
$64 GIANT bottle of parfume or supposed parfume.  Shouldn't he and his friend 
have noticed there was no smell from the broken bottle.  The store should have 
positively reeked.  Just one of those things that make you go hm.

Scooby Doo

I've seen that one.  Has anyone seen the new Scooby Doos'.What's New 
Scooby Doo?  In one episode set in a shopping mall, toys are coming to life 
and running amuk.
The security gaurd for the mall sounds and looks a lot like Don Knotts.  
Haven't checked the credits yet to find out if it is really him.  I don't 
believe it is, but they sure got a good sound alike.  Oh and he is the bad guy 
in this episode.

Who would you be?

I believe I would like to be Aunt Bee.  I am just a homemaker at heart, thought 
these times don't allow for most women to just stay home and take care of their 
families.
I would love to just cook, and clean and be on church committies.  While her 
primary focus was Andy and Opie she also made time for herself and her 
interest.  She was also strongwilled enough to stand up for what she believed 
in.

Mayor Stoner

I will admit to knowing nothing about small town or any other size town 
politics; however, I was watching The Mayberry Band episode where Mayor 
Stoner refuses to sign the voucher to send the band to the state capitol.  It  
seems to me that would have been something that should have been voted on at 
the council meeting, not just something hizz honor could refuse out of hand.

I was watching the final season of the show and on the episode where someone 
leaves the church $500 I noticed the church had changed it's name.  The pastor 
was the same, but when they were leaving the church after a meeting the name of 
the church was shown on the sign outside.  It was no longer All Souls Church.

Dry counties

I was watching Aunt Bee and the Lecturer last night, when I picked up on 
something.  Aunt Bee offered everyone Elderberry Wine.  She stated It's Andy's 
Recipe   A) Wasn't Mayberry a dry county?  2) Wouldn't making wine be akin to 
moonshining? C) I didn't think Aunt Bee would allow wine in the 
houseafterall she won't even allow rumcake on account of a brother she had. 
  Also in that same episode she cooked chicken in wine.  She would only let 
Opie have one piece.   Just a few observations.  
P.S.  I love her swinger act at the end of the episode.

Glen Cripes

I could be wrong, but I believe Glen Cripes was a baritone.  But like you that 
never made sense to me.  Loosing one person would not destroy a choir.  Also 
John the choir and play director always seemed pretty impressed with his own 
importance.  EVERYTHING, no matter how minor became a drama to him.  (No pun 
intended)  Having said all that, any of the episodes where Barney thinks he 
can sing are my favorites.  Probably because I like to think I can sing, but my 
family and friends are not quite so kind as Andy.  They feel free to share with 
me their feelings about my voice or lack thereof  as they would tell you.

RE: WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 11, Issue 159 prisoner of love

 I always found the Prisoner of Love episode to be completely different from 
any of the others also.  We will never know the thinking that went on to come 
up with it.  What I never understood was Andy always appreciated the looks of a 
beautiful woman; remember Babara Eden?, but he never let it go any further than 
appreciating the way a woman looked.  I also rewatched this episode and focused 
soley on the female character. The acting was great on her part.  The sly 
sidelong looks and you can tell she was thinking how can I take advantage of 
these rubes? But it was very out of character for Andy to let himself be taken 
in.  Barney you expect it of, but not Andy.  I think Andy returned to the 
courthouse because he realized what she was up to and that Barney was most 
definately gullible.

Funniest Episode

Now my husband thinks the two funniest episodes are Barney and the Motorcycle 
 The Darlings are Coming.  I like Opies Charity poor horatio, and Man in 
a Hurry.  Imagine being stuck somewhere where you can't use the phone to call 
for help, because the Mendlebright sisters are discussing their feet falling 
asleep. I love it.  He is so frustrated and nobody is in least bit fazed.

Dialog question

In the episode High Noon in Mayberry Barney gets in an argument with the mail 
carrier.  He tells him just wait til he parks in the wrong spot sometime.  It 
sounds to me like he responds with; as long as I'm carrying the mail I have 
right of way over Ambulance, firetrucks (or something along those lines) than 
he adds what sounds like and Heavier than aircraft  That doesn't make any 
sense though.  I would love to know what he is really saying.  Anyone tell me?

Someone probably knows the answer to this, but I am assuming that on the lot of 
the show there was only one street with houses on it.  EVERYONE lived 2 doors 
down from Andy it seemed.  Emma Brandt in the Episode Ellie comes to town, the

The church organ

I agree I think the men should have gotten together to have a barn raising. I 
also always thought that the whole church congregation should have contributed 
to buying the organ, not just the few more well off business men in town..thats 
how things are done at my church anyway.   Just a thought.

There are at least 2 references to halloween that I can think of;  The one 
episode STRANGER IN TOWN, when Barney talks about arresting 2 boys for ringing 
doorbells, and when Goober talks about being deputized to gaurd the cannon

featured.

If you recall in the episode Deputy Otis, Barney swears him in and part of that 
swearing in stated the city of Mayberry, County of Mayberry  I do agree 
though how it has always stumped me how Mayor Stoner had any authority of the 
County Sheriff.  I don't really think he did and Andy knew that.  That's why 
Andy just listened to what he had to say then did things his own way.  Kinda 
going along to get along.

While watching the episode Quiet Sam last night I noticed something quite 
interesting.  The newspaper Andy is reading at the table at Sams' house is the 
Mt. Airey Times   
In The Guitar Player Returns  Though all of Mayberry drives on Fords;  Jim 
Lindsey is driving a Mercedes Sports Coupe.
In spite of seeing these shows hundreds of times, I had never noticed these 
things before.

This episode was Barney's Sidecar after he had almost ran her over with her 
motorcycle.  Everyone in town was ready to pppfff Barney.
