Lost Episode
Hal asked if there were any lost episode of TAGS that might be good for his community theatre group to use. Well, there is one lost episode that was for unknown reasons never filmed. It was called "The Wandering Minstrel" and was written for the 1962-63 season. The entire script can be found in Richard Kelly's excellent book, The Andy Griffith Show (1981, John F. Blair Publisher). It's an interesting story of a character who visits Mayberry frequently and Andy gets him to settle down and take a real job in town, only to discover that his happiness is tied to his wandering spirit. It would be a real treat to see this lost treasure brought to life by a theatre group! Lots of luck to you and yours! Juanita's Last Name
Ben mentioned Barney's girlfriends that did not have last names, including Juanita. In a very early episode Andy finds a note on Barney from Juanita Beasley. This is the only time I recall them ever mentioning her last name. In a fifth season episode (TV or Not TV), Goober is introduced as Goober Beasley instead of Pyle. Could Gomer, Goober, and Juanita somehow all be related? It makes you think! Characters Evolving on Other Shows
How about Briscoe Darling? After Charlene and the boys left home, Briscoe changed his name and moved to Hazzard County where he adopted those two renegade boys, Bo and Luke Duke. I'm just glad they never visited Mayberry, knowing how Barney felt about speeding. "You give 'em 35, they'll drive 40. You give 'em 40, they'll drive 45. This is turning into a regular sin town!" Mayberry RFD DVDs
Rodney asked, "Does anyone know where you can get Mayberry RFD episodes on video or DVD?" I found them at the following site -- http://www.tvdvdplanet.com/movie/comedy/Mayberry_R.F.D..html The price seems sort of steep (199.99) but you get all three seasons. I'm not sure about the legality of these DVDs as they weren't available at any of the usual sites (Amazon.com, etc.). If anyone has purchased these, I'd like to hear about their quality. I've tried to search for a cable or satellite network that is currently showing the series, but no luck. I'd really like to see these episodes. Merry Christmas to all my fellow Mayberrians! Re: Catch Phrases
Here's my favorite phrase from the series, and it was only used one time... Gomer to Barney: "Why don't you just run up an alley and holler FISH!... That's right, I said it and I ain't takin' it back!" I've got no clue about what it means, but it cracks me up every time. Thanks!
On Monday I posted for copies of digests I missed while my computer was being repaired. So far I've gotten copies from at least five of my fellow Mayberrians! Thanks! You know, the nicest people in the world live in Mayberry! Need Digests
Hello to all my fellow Mayberrians: My home computer has been on the fritz for the past couple of days, so I missed a few digests. Can anyone please send my Digests 298, 299, and 300? Please send them directly to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks! Is there a place we can go to find old digests like this? It sure was good to be back online today and get today's digest. It is always a high point in the day! The Mysterious Disapperance of Rance Howard
This is for those of you who are diehard TAGS fanatics. I recently obtained a copy of the pilot episode that appears to be fully intact, running over 23 minutes. It has an entire scene featuring Will Wright (a.k.a. Ben Weaver) that is completely omitted from the episode that aired on Nick-at-Nite in the 1980s. Here's my question. The closing credits list Rance Howard as one of the actors in the episode. I've searched over and over and I cannot find Mr. Howard anywhere in the episode. Does anyone know what happened? Maybe he was in a scene that was later edited out, but my copy doesn't appear to have any edits. Perhaps he was originally in the episode and it was left on the cutting room floor before it first aired and they accidentally kept his name in the credits (I think this happened at least once in a later episode). I thought that maybe he was one of the cameramen seen in the courthouse interview scene, but neither of these guys look like Rance and they don't usually credit the folks who don't have speaking parts. This has got me stumped! What happened to Rance? This may be one of those big unanserable questions, kind of like "Who played Mr. Schwamp?" Can anyone out there please shed some light on this for me? Re: Edited Pilot Episode
Martin asked: "I have had the (Mt.) Pilot episode on VHS for years, but someone > mentioned that theirs was edited/shortened. How would I know if mine > is also? The tape I have (recorded from Nick-at Nite in the mid '80s) is only 21:15 in length including the opening theme song and the ending credits. Surely the original show would have been 24 or 25 minutes total. Also in the end credits it lists two actors who aren't included in the broadcast, so they must have been in the deleted scenes. There are several scene breaks that seem to jump right into the middle of a conversation. Despite all this, it is still great to see the origins of our beloved Mayberry. There were a few changes made between the pilot and the start of the series. 1) Barney is not in the pilot. 2). The "Town Drunk" in the pilot is Will Hoople, played by Frank Cady (best known as Mr. Drucker in "Petticoat Junction" and "Green Acres." 3). Andy refers to his "Aunt Lucy" being his housekeeper instead of Aunt Bee. 4) Frances Bavier appears as another townsperson, Henrietta Perkins. 5) The courthouse set is quite different, with folks coming and going through a door at the back of the set. If any WMMUTBB members have the DVD version (available on the Season 5 set of The Danny Thomas Show), please let us know how long the episode is on it. I'd like to purchase it, but I don't want to waste my money if it is the same highly edited episode that I have on tape. Another Mysterious Door
I was watching the episode "Stranger in Town" from season one and I noticed something odd that I've never noticed before (other than another actor is playing our beloved Floyd). Inside Floyd's shop, right behind the door there is another door leading to the beauty shop next door. I don't recall seeing this door at any other time. If I'm wrong and this mysterious door is seen at other times, please let me know. Like Andy said, "Curious, curious, curious!" Funniest Non-Barney Episode
Doug Johnson wrote "Which black and white episode that did not feature Barney would everyone consider the funniest?" That's easy. It's got to be "Floyd, the Gay Deceiver." It's the only episode that features Mayberry's second funniest guy as the main character. Just thinking about Floyd going on and on about running off to Nashville just cracks me up! "Floyd Lawson, you're a miserable wretch!!!"
