I agree with Harry, Convicts at Large is the best episode ever. That was a
cabin-full of talent right there! The best part being what Harry said, "you're
beginning to get to me". And Floyd's extreme case of Stockholm Syndrome "Better
phone him, Al". I also like Jailbreak. that's the one where they figure it out
because of dog hairs on the suits. Barney is so good in that, He goes
undercover in the jail and says "yeah, you was sleeping pretty good when they
brought me in. But I don't go easy (smacks fist into hand) got two of 'em". The
best part is when Barney is in front of the station wagon hitched to the
trailer. The woman starts it up and Barney digs his heels in like his body is
going to keep the car from moving. I know my description doesn't do it justice.
Better watch it, Al.

Picking a favorite episode of TAGS is almost as hard as picking a favorite
song, or a favorite child. I found 4 different polls and combined the results
of each (1) a poll of TAGSRWC members several years ago,
(2) a 40th reunion poll that I believe was conducted by TV Land (3) a poll of
TAGS cast members - this was also for a TV Land special and (4) the current
ongoing on-line poll at mayberry.com
Of these 4 polls there were 9 different episodes mentioned in the top 10 for
more than one poll. In each poll, I gave the #1 episode 10 points, the #2
episode 9 points, etc.
Here are the results:
#9 The Christmas Story (4 points total)
#8 Barney's First Car (6 points total)
#7 Opie's Charity (7 points)
#6 Mr. McBeevee (15 points and mentioned in 2 different polls)
#5 Convicts At Large (15 points and mentioned in 3 different polls - I used
this as the tiebreaker with Mr. McBeevee)
#4 Barney's Sidecar (18 points)
#3 Man In A Hurry (29 points)

And now (Drum Roll) the winners - a tie for first place - both mentioned in all
4 polls and both with 30 total points - "The Pickle Story" and "Opie the
Birdman"

My favorite episode was Convicts at Large. This showed off the great talents
of Don Knotts and Howard McNear. I loved when Floyd looked over at Barney and
said, "Dance with her Al". And of course when he kept time to the music with
the banana, genious. The camera work in this episode was also excellant. The
great shot of Barney standing and saying, "Let's you and me dance" to "Ralph"
Henderson (Mrs. Poltice). And when she asks him what changed his mind, he
lowers his voice and says,"You're beginning to get to me". I just love it. Of
my DVD collection, that episode has definately been watched the most.

I don't know the episode numbers but my favorite episode of anything period
ever is "Man In A Hurry". After that the black & white reunion episode,
followed by the color reunion episode then the pickle episode. As far as other
color episodes Goober buying the station & Andy eating 3 spaghetti dinners.

I have enjoyed reading the selections but I maintain it is impossible to choose
a favorite episode in each of the first five seasons. There are too many
exceptional episodes. When people ask my favorite TAGS episode, I say Man In a
Hurry," but only because that episode so very well shows us the peaceful,
gentle, humorous, considerate life of Mayberry. But I can think of three dozen
B/W episodes of similar quality.

I love the color episodes, but they are easier to grade:

Season 6: Opie's Job

Season 7: Dinner at Eight (I think this is the finest color episode)

Season 8: Emmitt's Brother in Law

While my all-time favorite is often the one I'm watching at the time; if
pressed to name one, I'll have to go with "Dogs, Dogs, Dogs." Next time you
watch it, see how many familiar lines are in it. Ah, that's a good'un!

My least favorite episodes are the one in which the Boone couple are always
fighting; just breaks my heart to see a non-loving marriage; and Senior Play
too. That whole premise of having to accept whatever dance craze was
currently popular with teens as a public performance event is beyond me.
What made it a play? Oh well, we know that despite being the greatest TV
program ever, some of the writers suffered a few lapses in judgement and we
can surely live with that!

I may be stepping on a few toes or break some rules but there are two episodes
that I do not like.  The one where Andy and Barney are practicing self defense
against someone with a knife.  The other one is when Barney gets frustrated
when he recites something, I don't know what it is, and he messes up his hair.
These two incidents took way too much to time to do in my opinion.  Some people
like it and some people don't.  Count me in as someone who doesn't.

Hello Fellow Mayberrians,

Well, unfortunately, I have not seen all of TAGS episodes no more than a
couple of times, but I can give my list of favorites from my little third
season dvd collection which I have watched over and over and over again. lol

1. The Big House
2. Barney's First Car
3. The Loaded Goat
4. High Noon in Mayberry
5. The Great Filling Station Robbery
6. The Darlins Are Coming (my son's favorite, I think)
7. Class Reunion (slowly, but surely becoming a favorite)
8. ANdy's English Valet (absolutely loved Malcolm Merriweather)
9. A Wife For Andy
10. The Rival ( a cute little episode)

Some day, I hope to be able to get a chance to watch all the episodes many
times over so I can come up with a more diverse listing there.

Take care,

trivia, rain and favorite episodes

I'm tickled to hear that Cheri's trivia event was such a huge success. I'll
bet her next one will be a humdinger! I'm with most of you on the
favorite season and episode question. It's hard to pinpoint just one as
almost all of them were so wonderful. I'm still partial to Only a Rose due
to Clara's magnificent gesture of friendship. As for rain, be careful
what you wish for. Down here we have many citizens flooded out and wishing
for a draught (not really)! Mother Nature has been messing with us
big-time!!!
