I am here to tell you that all of you who can snap your fingers, along with Earle Hagen's little boy, to enjoy it while you can. After carpal tunnel surgery on both hands, I can no longer do this, much to my consternation! I can, however, still whistle the theme song so must console myself with that. Finger snapping
The finger snapping in The Andy Griffith Theme was originally performed by composer Earle Hagen's eleven-year-old son Deane. Once Sheldon Leonard approved it, they had to re-record it later with someone else doing the snapping, because Deane was not a member of the musicians union. Earle always did the whistling himself in every version, including Return to Mayberry. I double-checked this with the boys at the lab (TAGSRWC headquarters, that is). And by the way, "The Andy Griffith Theme" is the correct original title. It did not come to be called "The Fishin' Hole" until later, when lyrics were added. Two Chairs No Waiting 90: Young Finger Snapper http://imayberry.com/podcasts/2010/06/two-chairs-no-waiting-90-young-finger-snapper/ Following episode #88, Mayberry fan Gaither Harwood stayed around in the chat room (I record the show live and some folks drop by and watch the live feed) and confirmed that Earle Hagen’s son was the original finger snapper for the Theme of The Andy Griffith Show. I had thought that Earle had told me that during a conversation so when Gaither mentioned the same fact I was excited. I had not mentioned Deane Hagen’s finger snapping on the podcast because I couldn’t confirm my information. Ken, I once read it was Earl Hagen's 12 year old grandson that did the finger snapping.It was either Mayberry 101 or one of the other Mayberry books that contained the information. Finger Snapping in Theme Song
Does anyone know who it is that snaps the finger in the TAGS opening theme song? I have a theory that it is someone from the Addams Family seeing they all snap their fingers in their opening theme song? And further more, seeing that Uncle Fester once appeared on TAGS as Melissa Stevens' daddy, I think it was probably him.
