Christmas Greetings from The Mayberry Guru
I would like to wish all of you at the Digest a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. If there ever was a time we needed TAGS it was in 2020. During my 74 years on this earth, I have never experienced anything like this past year. Between the terrible pandemic and very divisive political climate, it was so good to be able to sit back and visit Mayberry whenever the whim hit me. We chose not to do any events this past season. At our ages, my wife and decided it was best not to take any chances. As it turned out all of the events we normally do were all canceled. We would normally participate in between 80-90 car shows, parades, community festivals, and presentations, so it was indeed a very strange summer. I only used one tank of gas in my squad car all summer, when normally I would fill up about every ten days. Hopefully, 2021 will find us returning to some normalcy and we will once again be able to enjoy our regular routines, although I have decided to cut back some on parades. I will not be traveling as far around the state next year. Have a very wonderful Christmas, everyone, and may 2021 bring you much happiness, good health, and lots of friendships. The Taylor Inn and Mayberry Guru
My two loves are TAGS and the Green Bay Packers. I combined both this weekend. My wife and I stayed in Andy’s room at the Taylor Inn in Clear Lake, WI and were blown away by what Dave has done in replicating Andy’s house. And he has a great replica of the courthouse in the basement. So many details done just right like the gun on top of the china cabinet (in case anyone comes looking for reveng), doilies in the cells and the map behind Andy’s desk. He has a squad car and Wally’s Station behind his garage. I highly recommend it. Then we met Ken Anderson in Eau Claire at a Comic-Con event. He’s a real treasure. He put the handcuffs on me, turned on the siren, and showed me his bullet. “Now there’s bullet maintenance.” Then on to Green Bay for another Packer win. A great time had by all. Although I would absolutely love to meet the Mayberry Guru in person, I don’t believe my wife would appreciate me bidding on him for a “date”. Of course, if I mention it would be Dutch Treat and he would be responsible to tip the gypsy violinist, my wife just might be okay with it! :-) Thanks for the laughs Ken & I insist on us buying you & your better half lunch if we ever meet! Meandering with the Mayberry Guru
As Ken has requested, here’s my “simple thank you to Allan for all his hard work” ... but, I can’t think of one thing about Mayberry or TAGS that makes me smile (a thousand things, yes, but not just one!). As a side note: I recently got personalized (OK, “vanity”) plates for my truck. It reads simply TAGS. I’m so saddened when someone asks me why I would put TAGS on my tags. Re:Philosophical Meanders from the Mayberry Guru (Ken Anderson)
Good post. There are so many different angles to the TAGS story: the great talent of the actors, directors, writers, producers and staff, the historical curiosity of the backlot, the story so convincingly set in rural North Carolina yet filmed in metro Los Angeles. Best of all, it is just wonderful storytelling and a timeless treasure as good as Shakespeare in its own way. A true blessing. Philosophical Meanders from the Mayberry Guru
My parade and car show season has officially come to an end. We ended up doing 95 events since May 1. So it was a very busy but fun filled time. I do have another presentation to to on October 27 and then the following day the squad car goes into winter storage. I was at Fall Harvest Fest in the small town where I had taught for 30 years. The talk was all about one of my former 3rd grade students who had just been murdered along with her boy friend. Her brother has shot both of them in the head and then buried them on his farmland. What a tragedy for such a small town of a little over 1000. They were all into the manufacturing and distribution of meth. Several weeks ago they had another murder when a man killed his elderly father by choking him. It is after days like this when I truly appreciate TAGS and all lit represents. Made a trip to back to my very small home town. Saw the police chief and his deputy. Both were wearing bullet proof vests and they were both carrying guns and tasers. A far cry from when I grew up there and we had an elderly constable who didn't even have a badge or squad car. Yet he was able to handle any issues that came up. Everything changes so fast nowadays, including our Digest. I remember when it first began and all the posts that were shared every day. It was the first thing I would look at when I got home from teaching. However, our posts are dwindling a lot, and I am guilty of not posting like I used too. I realize a lot of our topics have been covered many times and all the newer websites and social media opportunities are taking the place of what we do here. But I sure hope we can continue sharing our stories and all that we love about TAGS. Allan has put so much work into this site for so many years so I hope we can keep the tradition going. So do me a favor. If you read this post, please post a simple thank you to Allan for all his hard work and please share one thing about TAGS that really makes you smile and feel good. Let's see if we can get a day where the digest has lots of things to read that will give us a smile or two. Ten four. -- Ken Anderson The Mayberry Guru 2906 May Street Eau Claire, Wisconsin 54701 www.themayberryguru.com www.mayberryreflections.com ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Mayberry Guru Night in Eau Claire
We had a couple of great days here in Eau Claire. Our Ford and Lincoln Dealership had their 3rd annual Rendition Car Show. We were the winners of their top Rendition Award for my portrayal of Barney Fife along with our squad car. It was a great event. Last night the Burger King Corporation in Eau Claire hosted a Mayberry Guru Night at their Weekly Car Show. What a great night that was. I received so much recognition by Burger King with lots of interviews. TV station was there for their weather report and they too showed the car and talked about the Mayberry night. A friend of mine dressed up as Otis and came and he was a big hit. There was so much Mayberry love around that a young man got down on his knees in front of the squad car and proposed to his girlfriend. She accepted. We also won the People's Choice Award. We have another big car show on Saturday and a Parade at a Nabor's Day Celebration in a neighboring town. Check my website at www.themayberryguru,com to see a page dedicated to Mayberry Guru Night at Burger King. Mayberry Guru Update
Well, folks I am still plugging along here in the upper Midwest. Mayberry is still keeping me going. We have a car show Christmas party to attend tomorrow night. Friday night I am taking six family members to a Christmas Show called "The Jail Bailers". It is a musical comedy show featuring lawmen and their prisoners. It is a major fund raiser for our county Humane Association. So I will be there as Barney to greet folks and help with crowd control. Always a fun event. Saturday is a bittersweet day. One of my high school classmates was killed in a tragic accident so we will be attending his funeral back home. A number of my high school classmates are coming so it will be an emotional time for me. I just found out that our high school choir director will be coming. He took us on a concert tour my senior year and we sang at the Pentagon and also at the New York World's Fair. I have not seen him since graduation night in 1964 but he emailed me tonight. He said he has been following all my Mayberry events. From the funeral we will head to Mauston, WI, about 150 miles from here where I will be doing an evening Mayberry presentation for a Lions Club event. We have snow on the ground here in Wisconsin and I am delighted. I hope each of you is enjoying all the excitement and other things that go along with the Christmas Season. May I wish each of you a very Merry Mayberry Christmas and don't forget to watch "The Christmas Story". -- Ken Anderson The Mayberry Guru 2906 May Street Eau Claire, Wisconsin 54701 www.themayberryguru.com www.mayberryreflections.com ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Trivia Question and new Mayberry Guru Story
Trivia Question: I am reading a mystery that was written in the 1930's. One of the characters said to another, "Don't be so cocksure of yourself". That immediately triggered a TAGS scene when someone in Mayberry used that same phrase, or one very very close, using the word "cocksure". Who can tell the name of the person who said it and what was the person referring to? Also, a story I wrote for Nostalgia Magazine of Spokan, Wa, is now available. Here is an on line link to the story. http://nostalgiamagazine.net/ken-anderson-the-mayberry-guru/ It will also appear on the Nostalgia app, available for smartphones and tablets via the App Store and Google Play store. -- Ken Anderson The Mayberry Guru 2906 May Street Eau Claire, Wisconsin 54701 www.themayberryguru.com www.mayberryreflections.com ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

Mayberry Guru Update
Well, things are busy here in the Chippewa Valley of Wisconsin. My wife and I are very busy with car shows and parades. I received some exciting news this week. Tomorrow Wisconsin Public Television is paying me a visit. They want to do a story about me for their "Wisconsin Life" program on Wisconsin Public Television. So they will be coming to our house tomorrow for about two hours to do an interview and to do some filming. Then they are going to be going to the Stardust Car Show with me to film. It just happens that my car will be the featured car that night as it will be a fund raiser to help support our local Police and Fire Units. Other police cars will also be on display. I also received a call from the publisher of Nostalgia Magazine which is based in Spokane, Washington. It is a bi-monthly magazine and they are going to do a story about my Mayberry Guru gig. Publisher told me everything is a go and he will let me know when it goes to print. May be a while as I know sometimes it takes months for a story to appear after it is written. So all in all I would say Mayberry is very much alive and well here in Wisconsin. We have events the next 8 days including one Mayberry Presentation. Fortunately the weather has been just perfect. However, on Saturday we are doing a day long event which includes a car show and a very long parade and the temperature will be around 91. And that's hot - dang hot. I hope all of you are having a safe and fun summer. -- Ken Anderson The Mayberry Guru 2906 May Street Eau Claire, Wisconsin 54701 www.themayberryguru.com www.mayberryreflections.com ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Christmas Meanderings from The Mayberry Guru
I would like to wish all of my Mayberry Digest friends a most blessed and wonderful Christmas. Although I know most of you by name only and it is probable that we will never meet in person, I still consider you my friends and I appreciate the daily connection we have. Christmas when I was a child was a Christmas without the hustle and bustle. We had no malls and we received no gift cards. We didn't spend time traveling to all corners of the country to visit our family. Our family was no further away than a few minutes drive at most. Mom spent time in the kitchen making simple Christmas cookies and we always cut down our own real tree. It was adorned by simple ornaments that we had had for many years and those long tinsel icicles were a must on every tree. The only Christmas music we heard were those carols played on our one AM radio and any Christmas programs on TV were seen in black and white. Santa Claus was very real to us as we were still innocent of the many hard realities of life. We went to bed on Christmas Eve covered with thick blankets and heavy coats because we didn't have central heat. Quite often there were two of us in a bed which helped keep us warm. None of my friends or relatives were well off so none of us expected much for Christmas, but what we received was cherished for a long time. No one delivered a free meal to our door and no one took me shopping or brought free gifts to our door even though there were four of us without a father. We spent hours looking through the Montgomery Wards or Alden's Christmas Wish Book that came in the mail, even though we knew that most of the toys we saw would remain just something to dream about. When I see all the glitter and lights and frantic crowds all glamoring to get the best deals only to pay for them with credit cards that they can't afford to use, I long for those long forgotten Christmases of my childhood. Christmas in a small Wisconsin town covered with snow 50 years ago was very special. Christmas was simple, they were sort lived, but they were very special. And I would give anything to be able to relive just one of them again. Mayberry Guru Gigs
The car show/parade season has begun here in Eau Claire. I took the squad car to the first car show sponsored by a neighboring university club and we came home with a People's Choice First Place Trophy. I was asked if I would return to an air show as part of the entertainment, so I will be doing a police chase and making an arrest. I also agreed to be the special security at our County Humane Association Fund Raiser and also the Arresting Officer for a Jail and Bail fund raiser. Saturday I will be taking the Squad Car to a little boy's birthday party. He has a Cops and Robbers Theme. A lot of fun times coming up. Two parades over Memorial Day weekend and then summer officially begins. I have also been asked to be the speaker at two Class Reunions and also at our new Veterans Home. The Mayberry Guru Cites a Congressman
The Mayberry Guru had another great time at a big parade at Chippewa Falls Pure Water Days. We received the honor of winning a 1st place trophy for having the most original entry in the parade. But that wasn't the highlight of the day. I am sure you all remember that Barney tagged the governor's car for illegal parking. Well, the Mayberry Guru was not about to be outdone by Barney. While walking around before the parade started I spotted our U.S. Congressman Ron Kind's vehicle. And it was parked in the middle of the street. Now being the conscientious lawman that I am, I felt I just had to cite the congressman for illegal parking. ( pictures are on my website) I didn't really hang around his car to see what happened when he found that yellow citation on his windshield. I expect I will be getting a call from Washington sometime soon but there will be no favoritism while the Mayberry Guru is on duty. -- Ken Anderson The Mayberry Guru 2906 May Street Eau Claire, Wisconsin 54701 www.mayberryreflections.com ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
