Checkpoint Chickie - in real life! (Joe)

Thank you, Joe, Dewey, and Sande

2013-01-29 Thread Ken Anderson
I came home from a very busy day at the supermarket where I work very tired
and longing for an old fashioned trip to a small grocery store. Although I
must admit where I work is a very very enjoyable place to work and I do get
to to visit with so many great people throughout the day. Well anyway, to
make a long story even longer, I got home and turned on the computer and
went to WBMUTBB. And what did I find? Three of the most wonderful
postings that I had every read. To Sande, Joe, and Dewey, what can I say
but thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Can you imagine what our lives would be like if all of us on the Digest
could live in a community together? What a special place that would be.
It would be filled with wonderful people and we would live in harmony (
most of the time) and enjoy the simple things of life. Personally I would
like to own the small grocery store on Main Street.

Seriously, you folks on the Digest are what makes being a Mayberry fan so
great. I often share things from the Digest with friends of mine here in
Eau Claire and they are amazed how so many people from different walks in
life from all over the country can come together every day and share a
common love.

But Joe They Did Have a Stunt Double for Post Stroke Floyd

2009-08-03 Thread tom kessel
I found it interesting someone questioned if Floyd (Howard McNear) had a
double after his stroke. I can site easily one episode (more if i think
about it), Goober's Contest comes to mind. Goober had other customers to
wait on and Floyd had to move on and if you look closely at the backhead
view, of the driver in the convertible ,trust me it isnt Floyd (Howard). And
here is an open debatable question for a possible Floyd Double. . In Floyds
BarberShoppe , Floyd is talking to Andy outside the barbershoppe , sitting
in his car. how interesting that when the conversation ends, the camera pans
back to Andy as we hear the sound of Floyd driving off. Either the sound was
dubbed in . if not im sure a double was used tho not scene. nice effect too.
Just a thought. The search for Mr Schwamps older brother still continues.

Im waiting for an answer to my question from yesterday, again, its a classic
scene of a disgusted Andy practically pushing Goob out of the courthouse and
with stinging bite and sarcasm , he has the final word saying that famous
Quote put to humor to a pesty Goober. That line is classic . Its a great

Great work, Joe (et al.)! Joe Hamilton was a small but vital part of Mayberry,
and he deserves to have his own page! I don't think I would call him a
background actor, since he had speaking parts and was often in the forefront of

Wallace Ford Burt Mustin Joe Hamilton and More

2008-10-07 Thread tom kessel
ill reveal tomorrow the name of the show buisness legend who did a cameo in
Casablanca. ONce the name gets out, check out your dvd players some day and
freeeze the scene. you tell me what you see. Ill bet my last dollar Warner
Bros put him up to it. This is on par with who is Mr/Schawamp? i love a good
mystery.but sadly we may never know the answer to both. And maybe thats for
the best. Wallace Ford i can tell you was heartbroken Hollywood didnt come
knocking to his door like they should had by time he passed on in 1966
espescially after his role in Patch of Blue.1965. ONe of his finest
performances was on of all things an episode of one of my favorite tv series
Father Knows Best. ITs one of the most fondly remembered episodes of that
acclaimed seriee. You hear that Elinor Donahue? from 1954 the Christmas show
with Wallace as Nick, mistaken as Santa Claus when the Andersons are
stranded up in the woods in a wintry cabin. What a memorable episide. The
series famous for its brilliant music ,its score scene for scene that still
holds up today. Imagine a comedy series remembered for its musical score.
The entire episodes not just the opening credits.ANd look at the TAGS
players who guested on that show. Catch Wallace in Freaks 1932 . very
talented man. Did i read Gritton Joe asking me if i knew Burt when he had
happier times?Of course. In 1970-71 at 88 he was in grand health long before
taking ill. BUt he stayed in harness til the very end. I have scores of
letters of happier days before illness set in. He didnt become an actor til
he was 65 His wife had just died when i came into his life. Old as he was he
kept on writing til nearly the end then his niece told me the rest. What a
chatterer too. he loved it when people remembered him. ANd he had plenty to
say. He told me they retook several times the tomatoe scene in that classic
episode with Barney and him and Hal Smith cracking up in between each take.
Someone said Joe Hamilton and Murray Hamilton look and sound alike?YOu know
the saying. no two people see the same thing. I only speak for myself. No
way do they look or sound alike. Outside of same last name i cant see a
blessed thing they had in common. Yes there is. THey were superb performers.
Murray performed til cancer set in and robbed us of him. JAws was his best
remembered role but catch him in that classic episode from Twilight Zone,
One For the Angels. The last thing id do is boast about myself but in case,
im happy to. Joe mentioned Dick Ryan. I think its safe to say this actor was
otherwise so forgotton by 1967 when he did a 5 second scene. it was a
godsend. im glad i caught up to him but sad im most likely bthe only fan out
there anywhere who picked up on that episode, spotted him and sent off a fan
letter. there were literally hundreds and hundreds of character actors ( all
died by 2008) back in the 30s and 40s in Dicks heyday. he was one of many
reliable standbys. a jack of all trades. this was his livlihood performing
as supporting player in films. He was like so many others, type casted which
is fine but by the 50s Hollywood was changing. .He wasnt seen as much in
films no fault of his own but now in television but never as top rated
character-supporting actor. He was a reliable thesbian . But his parts grew
much smaller til finally we last see him in such an insignicant scene from
Dont Miss a Good Bet..But leave it to Andy Griffith to spot him and others
to do a bit part. Its vital. its music to their vears to be wanted.Oh i
forgot on Wallace Ford. His line Boy. no not really. his character Roger
was bluffing and threatening Andy Taylor looking down to him , belittling
this kid. He knows Andys onto him . Liston to the sharp edge of BOY and
better yet I just might have a hand in those penunias yet. ANDY with the
accent on ANDY shows the powerful scene . TAGS was chartering new waters by
1964 exploring with success new avenues.I want to close this out. Gritton
Joe just e mailed me. Finally then Ill shut up.. Im sorry Im too lazy to
look this up and the name escapes me but Ken and Joe and masny of you know
the name. In 1974 Frances Bavier told me one more performer not a regular
from the show that she said was very dear to her. he would sit between takes
laugh up a storm tell stories snd jokes and break everybody up. when she
told me (She forgot his name) i got her point. his character role was
anything but that of a Cut Up.In Barney Holds a Summit. this episode in my
opinon only is the best ever post Don Knotts guest episode and a gem all by
itself (Look at the power of that dramatic scene of Andy almost screaming
his head off at Barney back home handing him the phone) and the splendid
actor playing the head of the Russian Delegation (remember him saying
PICKLES) he died just a year or so ago i read in one of my movie magazines.
Everyone on the set simply adored him FRances told me. He was the opposite
of his grim character. Time to close shop. God Bless from Col.Tim and I.
Tom Kessel

Thanks, Joe

Thanks for resending Mr. Kessel's post. I was really confused and kept
going back to see what I had missed. What I didn't notice is that Number
270 was missing. I was starting to worry about myself getting a bit tetched
in the head. Thanks for pointing out the missing digest, Aunt Bee. And
thanks again, Joe Gritton, for reposting Mr. Kessel's observations. I'm
still fixated on Wallace Ford in Harvey. I haven't had a chance to watch
the two shows yet. I'm trying to remember when Harvey was filmed and when
Aunt Bee's Romance was filmed to see how old Mr. Ford was in each one. If
there was a few years difference, maybe that's why I didn't recognize him.
Or maybe I'm just not a trained noticer and should drop out of trained
noticing school.
Mr. Kessel's account of Burt Mustin being so grateful for being remembered
and so anxious to not be forgotten brought tears to my eyes. Thank you, Mr.
Kessel, for giving us a glimpse of the real personalities behind the
characters we loved. I am in awe of you for your tireless work at getting
to know these people and for your wonderful memory so you can recount your
experiences to us. Because of this, you'll never be forgotten either.

Here is--the message from Joe Hamilton relative--February 2006

2008-10-06 Thread GRITTON, JOE A (ATTOPS)
I would like to pass along my own personal remembrance of Don Knotts. I
talked with him only once, at a large gathering in Nashville several years
ago, but I could sense that he was a kind and surprisingly shy man. I told
him that my great uncle was the late Joseph Hamilton, who portrayed a very
visible Mayberry loafer in many early TAGS episodes (³Get a horse,
Barney!²). As I tried to explain this to him, an insistent event handler was
hurrying us fans through the receiving line, but Don simply ignored him,
taking the time to assure me that he well remembered Uncle Joe and even
asking me how we were related ‹ Joe was married to my grandmother¹s sister.
Don Knotts sure didn¹t have to go to all this trouble, and yet he was more
than willing to make a fan happy.

Answering Joe (Gritton)

2006-08-22 Thread Martin Simmons
Greetings all,

I claim to be Florida's most avid Andy Griffith Show fan because of my
car tag, JL-327, but here is something I must have missed.

JOE GRITTON wrote -

Its just one of those inconsistencies like ... Gomer knowing
nothing about cars, and then being a genius mechanic.

Crazy me, I don't remember that! I thought Gomer always referred to
his cousin Goober as the genius mechanic, putting a car engine on a
boat (that's fast on water), not knowing anything but gas oil, and
Gomer was the go-between with Malcolm Tucker in Man In A Hurry. Of
course Goober WAS the car genius. My favorite Goober episode is #144,
Goober Takes a Car Apart. Floyd is perfect (I heard it then, it
sounded like a sneeze) and Goober's Cha-Wheat Pucka Pucka like
ole' banney rooster get me every time! I always wondered if Gilley
Walker learned to drive so fast from running from the Germans on
Hogan's Heroes?

When did Gomer know cars? I am not being obtuse or fa-sish-us, just
forgot the episode(s) when he did.

For Joe Gritton - The Vacant Chair

2006-02-26 Thread Sam Paul
Hey Joe,

I found this for ya...

Sam / Knoxville, Tennessee

THE VACANT CHAIR
Words by H.S. Washburn
Music by George F. Root (1820-1895)

We shall meet but we shall miss him.
There will be one vacant chair.
We shall linger to caress him
While we breathe our ev'ning prayer.
When one year ago we gathered,
Joy was in his mild blue eye.
Now the golden cord is severed,
And our hopes in ruin lie.

CHORUS: We shall meet, but we shall miss him.
There will be one vacant chair.
We shall linger to caress him
While we breathe our ev'ning prayer.

At our fireside, sad and lonely,
Often will the bosom swell
At remembrance of the story
How our noble Willie fell.
How he strove to bear the banner
Thro' the thickest of the fight
And uphold our country's honor
In the strength of manhood's might.

CHORUS

True, they tell us wreaths of glory
Evermore will deck his brow,
But this soothes the anguish only,
Sweeping o'er our heartstrings now.
Sleep today, O early fallen,
In thy green and narrow bed.
Dirges from the pine and cypress
Mingle with the tears we shed.

CHORUS
