Another source, shudder, is the MS Knowledge Library but that can be difficult to burrow through. They also have an anonymous FTP site with lots of goodies, I will dig up the reference to that and post it this weekend (its Friday night here and the whisky bottle is demanding attention). [wdvltalk] Re: [OT} Weekend dabbling SSI any thoughts from the SSI gurus?
Hi Michael, So far I have: snip much achievement Congratulations! I never got my SSI nav bars working :-( Can we have a link to see it all in action? One thing I am dimly groping towards is the ability to input page content using the GET or POST method somehow, or is this way off base? Not at all, but I think you're getting beyond SSI and onto server-side scripting here (but don't panic, it's just the next step, and it's a very gentle one) Question for the SSI gurus out there: any other thoughts and directions to look at? server Apache/1.3.12 (Unix) PHP/4.1.2 ^ Have a poke around http://www.php.net/, specifically http://www.php.net/manual/en/introduction.php It's kind of like inline-scripting-and-SSI-with-a-twist, and once you've learnt it you can write fantastic stuff. Copy and paste this into a blank file, upload it to your server as something.php, then visit it - it's a *very* basic CMS :-) ---start--- ?php $content = (isset($HTTP_POST_VARS[content])) ? $HTTP_POST_VARS[content] : hello, world!; echo h1. $content. /h1; ? form action=NAME-OF-FILE.php method=post textarea name=content?php echo $content; ?/textarea input type=submit value=Update CMS / /form end n.b. you need to change NAME-OF-FILE in the form's action. [wdvltalk] Re: [OT} Weekend dabbling SSI any thoughts from the SSI gurus?
Hi Jon, thanks for the reply, comps and tip.See link below, only some sections are ssi enabled at the moment, [ Information, Recreation, Sports, but some others are running in parallel, accessed from those sections ] but as you won't be able to see the code I will set it out here. To get the 'auto selection' you need to define your own variable with a css selector value: !--#if expr=${DOCUMENT_URI} = /edc/arts/ -- !--#set var=THIS_SECTION value=text-transform: uppercase; background: aqua; -- !--#elif=${DOCUMENT_URI} = /edc/abouttown/ -- !--#set var=THIS_SECTION value=text-transform: uppercase; background: yellow; -- !--#elif expr=${DOCUMENT_URI} = /edc/festivals/ -- !--#set var=THIS_SECTION value=text-transform: uppercase; background: #FFB6C1; -- !--#elif expr=${DOCUMENT_URI} = /edc/information/ -- !--#set var=THIS_SECTION value=text-transform: uppercase; background: yellow; -- !--#elif expr=${DOCUMENT_URI} = /edc/music/ -- !--#set var=THIS_SECTION value=text-transform: uppercase; background: yellow; -- !--#elif expr=${DOCUMENT_URI} = /edc/recreation/ -- !--#set var=THIS_SECTION value=text-transform: uppercase; background: aqua; -- !--#elif expr=${DOCUMENT_URI} = /edc/sports/ -- !--#set var=THIS_SECTION value=text-transform: uppercase; background: white; -- !--#elif expr=${DOCUMENT_URI} = /edc/ -- !--#set var=THIS_SECTION value=text-transform: uppercase; background: aqua; -- !--#else -- !--#set var=THIS_SECTION value=text-transform: uppercase; background: transparent; -- !--#endif -- which is called to the head of the relevant pages thusly: !--#include virtual=../admin/this_section.shtml -- and the css which I also call with an include : .recreation { !--#echo var=THIS_SECTION -- } h6 a href=../index.html class=index HOME/a | a href=../abouttown.html class=abouttown About Town/a | a href=../arts/arts.html class=arts Arts /a | a href=../features.html class=features Features/a | a href=../information/information.shtml class=information Information/a | a href=../newsindex.html class=newslinks News Links/a | a href=../recreation/recreation.shtml class=recreation Recreation/a | a href=../sports/index.shtml class=sports Sport/a | a href=../services.html class=services Services/a | a href=#bottomBottom of Page/a | /h6 I could have called the whole thing, ie the .section class but I started by testing the pages manually and as I am bringing in the SSI pages progressively I find it easier to 'do it by hand'. For the individual pages similar procedure but my variables will defined by using something like: !--#if expr=${DOCUMENT_URI} = /edc/arts/ -- !--#set var=BG_COLOR value=green -- and the 'DOCUMENT_NAME' environment function. BTW have already started dabbling with php, so the tip is v useful but I want to see how far I can drive all this first! Cheers Visiting Wellington? [wdvltalk] Re: [OT} Weekend dabbling SSI any thoughts from the SSI gurus?
For the sake of completeness [ read a slip, grin ] the nav bar is also called to be the pages thus: !--#include virtual=../admin/hnav.shtml -- the order of the includes in the individual pages: 1. !--#include virtual=../admin/this_section.shtml -- head must go first 2. .recreation { !--#echo var=THIS_SECTION -- } headcss 3.!--#include virtual=../admin/hnav.shtml -- body As I mentioned in the original post the css class could be called to, but at this stage I am sticking to the KISS principle. Another reason, although some of the sections have linked global' style sheets there are some css functions which can overide the nav bar function, so I want the embedded style sheet to give precedence. [wdvltalk] Re: business use of flash
Comments below: David Blakey wrote: The Flash animation is not on HP's home page, of course. Even those of us who oppose ill-thought-out implementations of Flash have pointed out (in my case, ad nauseam, I thought) Guess not. Or I'm particularly deaf. I may have missed those discussions actually, because I took a several month break. that a Flash or similar animation can be useful to make particular points at particular times in the visitor's purchasing cycle. (I have written before about the client whose Web developers included a Flash animation of the white-board presentation that the client has used successfully to close several deals.) But not on the home page. If I were sitting through a boring meeting (is there any other kind?) I would probably welcome a Flash presentation to liven things up. Now that you mention it, I almost always see Flash used as an intro to a site. And yes, that's part of the reason I find it annoying. I no sooner hit the place than I have to sit around and wait for something to load that I now have to wait for it to be over before I can get down to the business at hand (tortured English, that--sorry). The sad factors that may be at work with the many inappropriate Flash animations are: 1. The company is either run by geeks or allows the geeks free rein. 2. The marketing department does not know that the Web is not just another form of TV or cinema advertising. 3. The art department does not know the difference between a good graphics designer and a good Web designer. Excellent points. I'm beginning to see perhaps it's inappropriate use of Flash that I dislike, not Flash itself. I'm never going to warm up to animated gifs, though. Or music on sites, except in rare cases. Thank you for your time. Yes pluses all round for that one, even tho I had to turn on my ActiveX to view it. They you note, paid attention to the 8 sec rule you aren't left in limbo, you have something to look at all the time, and obviously paid attention to the files sizes! add socks to film and formula one, lol also I second David's wise words, the site I mentioned was the local fringe festival and they obviously let a very creative person loose on the gateway page without considering the implications of loading a huge flash file. - Original Message - From: sherry young [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, December 08, 2002 12:57 PM Subject: [wdvltalk] Re: buisness use of flash I forgot until this discussion came up but here's a site I totally adore: http://www.10socks.com/10socks.asp?adurl= I majorly love these people, their product, the entire concept.
